Butler County voters decide on constructing a new county courthouse with two ballot items. One authorizes building and the other issues bonds totaling 740000 dollars to cover costs, funded primarily by Revenue Sharing funds with a mill levy to back payments if needed.
Greene High School dramatists will stage Up the Down Staircase in the old gym April 13 and 14 at 8:00 p.m. under director Roger Johnson. Tickets sold by cast members and at the door. lighting will be updated. Cast includes Joanne Senne and others. student cast lists follow. Local election notices detailing polling sites and times are included.
Evangelist Rev Buel L Liming from Des Moines Iowa will lead a week of Bible conference services at Calvary Baptist Church April 8 to 13. He will preach at 11 am and 7 45 pm on Sundays and 7 30 pm on weekdays with topics on Jesus Christ prophecies and the Second Coming.
Cecil B DeMille's 1927 silent classic King of Kings will be shown at St Peter s Lutheran Church on Sunday April 8 at 730 pm. Admission is free. The 115 minute film stars H B Warner as Christ with Joseph Schildkraut as Judas Iscariot and also features Ernest Torrence and Dorothy Cumming.
Mr and Mrs Wilson Clark of Birchwood Wisconsin, formerly of Greene, were injured Friday around midnight when a deer crossed their path causing a plunge down an embankment and a crash into a tree. They are hospitalized at St Marys Hospital Duluth Minnesota with cuts bruises a broken leg and internal injuries.
A 20-25 pound beaver checked into Les Stock's garage Sunday. Neighbors posted a no vacancy sign and Blair Moffet with Ott Menken and sticks forced the animal into a drain pipe after a tense scramble.
The Greene Jaycees will elect officers at the April 4 meeting at 7:30 p.m. in Jaycee Hall. Plans for River Days will be discussed and a report on the new Butler County Court will be heard.
Mr and Mrs Lyle Mathers plan a frame and fireproof 42 by 100 foot addition to their Greene nursing home. The project adds 24 beds bringing total capacity to 34 with 2 single and 11 double rooms. A nurses station office examination room and bed side call system will be added. Construction awaits approvals from Northeast Iowa Health Planning Board State Health Engineer and State Fire Marshals after Greene City Council permit.
Greene Recorder reports Representative Grassley sent a letter to Highway Commission Director Coupal on March 29 asking study of the new Highway 14 and old Highway 14 intersection. petitions and questionnaires bring total 709 signatures from 39 communities and 78 questionnaires. 31 near misses noted and calls for further accidents data via mail or phone.
Pulitzer Prize winner Frank Miller, Des Moines Register cartoonist, will address the annual Commercial Club banquet Tuesday April 10 at 6 30 in the U S Cafeteria. Miller discusses humor as a necessity amid crises and outlines his career including work for Picture and Sunday Register, WWII and Korean War service, and family. Tickets available through Thursday from Gail Schafer at Sneed Ins.
Free vision screening for children ages 3 to 5 in the Greene School District will be held Thursday April 26 at Greene Elementary School from 1 to 3 30 p.m. The Iowa Society for the Prevention of Blindness notes one in four students needs eye care and early screening helps prevent learning and emotional problems.
The 1973 Heart Fund Drive in Greene raised a total of 640.27 dollars with 239.50 from business and 350.77 from residents. Fifth and sixth graders at Greene Elementary, under Mrs Kehoe Steck and Mrs Kittleson, plus Forest Cannon, contributed 50 dollars. Chairman H. B. Green and County Treasurer Dale Schroeder thank volunteers and all contributors for a successful drive.

Memorial service and burial for Frank Bunker will be held at a later date in Iowa City. He died of cancer at Lawa City Nursing Home in Cedar Falls after living there since 1972, born October 7 1896 in Bristow, married Violet Clark in 1917, later divorced. Survived by son Fred, daughter Maxine Gardner, five grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, sister Mrs A J Heideman. Bequeathed remains to University of Iowa Medical Research Department.
