The Greencastle Band performed at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the 500 mile race, marking their sixth consecutive appearance. Oscar Lee McKamey a 25 year old rural mail carrier from Tillmore and Mary Bryan age 24 of Fill More. W H Hood 59 of Chi ago retired and Sara S Gardner 57 of Greencastle. John W Lukembill 25 farmer from Putnam county and Jessie Bernice O'Hair 20 from Putnam county at home.
The Greencastle high senior baseball team lost 8 to 3 to Terre Haute Gerstmyer Tech in a seven inning game. Greencastle led 3 to 2 after five innings but an error in the sixth opened the scoring for Terre Haute. The Purple and Gray finish their season with three losses as A Gross and G Crawley produced the late runs for Greencastle.
Greencastle residents look forward to a Sunday afternoon organ recital at 4 o clock in the Methodist church. Pupils of Professor Van Denman Thompson will perform on the large organ. No admission fee is charged and the event is praised as an inspiring musical treat.
Mrs Paul Ream of Rowerdale has been called to Grant County Hospital at Marion to instruct practical and theoretical nursing in the nurse training school while the regular instructor is on leave. It is a temporary position and she expects to return home within six weeks. Mrs Ream was formerly Putnam county nurse.
Ninety seniors of Greencastle High receive diplomas at the 51st commencement held in the vocational physical education building. Principal Frank N. Jones announced an average grade above 90 percent. Dr. W. E. Gratz of Chicago delivered the address on What is Wrong with Our Youth, urging reflection on grownups’ influence. The ceremony featured music, a class address by Dennis Matthews, and the presentation of diplomas by Superintendent Warren J. Yount.
Reported a general frost overnight but dry ground limited impact with little if any damage. Local farmers noted survival of crops and no significant losses expected. Weather officials cautioned continued cool conditions yet advised no major agricultural harm anticipated.
A large group from Greencastle attended speedway races in Indianapolis on Friday. Louis Powell of South Bend was sentenced by Judge James P. Hughes in Putnam circuit court to 1 to 5 years at the Indiana State Prison at Michigan City for escaping from the Indiana State Farm at Putnamville. He fled on May 29 and was captured May 30, then brought to Greencastle and placed in Putnam County jail. Sheriff Bitelforge will transport him to Michigan City to begin serving the term.
T. T. Swearingen national director of Young People's summer conferences will speak Sunday at 10 45 am at First Christian church Greencastle. Local youths take part in the program for the Indiana Conference held annually at Bethany Park with fifty two conferences expected and about five thousand youths to attend. Rev. Bruner prepared outlines for vesper addresses for this year. All young and interested older people are invited.
Twenty years ago in Greencastle notes report attendance at Indianapolis auto races by Andrew Hirt Cecil Jenkins Walter Albaugh Edgar and Elmer Vancleave. A wedding of Flora Bond and Joseph Pierce is noted. Allen Brothers Store advertises black silk hose 25 50 cents and colored hose 1 25, lisle thread tights ten cents. Helen Jones returns home from Baker University after teaching there.
A Memorial Day program in Greencastle drew a large crowd to the cemetery as Civil War veterans were honored with ritual readings and graveside decorations. M J Murphy and Rev B H Bruner led the service. Louis F Hays read Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. Noble J Johnston of Terre Haute spoke on veterans’ needs and loyalty. The D A R conducted their monument service, and local students from the Girls Glee Club performed.
Four Putnam County roads will be bid at the June session of the county commissioners. Projects include a gravel road in Floyd township costing 4049, a stone road in Chayerdale township at 17619, a macadam road in Jefferson township priced 10750.20, and a concrete road in Green Castle township estimated at 28890.
The Purnan County Board of Review will convene Monday for an organization session ahead of a thirty day review of 1930 assessments prepared by township assessors. Expected actions are limited to organization with members John P. Carrington Russell township and Charles H. Kelly Greencastle, plus County Assessor Charles Marshall, County Auditor W. E. Gill, and County Treasurer Gilbert E. Ogles.
The Ladoga State Bank of Ladoga was highest bidder for bonds to build the William Logan road in Washington township. County Treasurer Gilbert Owles announced the bid, with the Ladoga bank offering 6.95. Competing bids came from First National Bank of Greencastle 71.35, Brazil Trust Co 66.86, Citizens State Bank of Bainbridge 62, and Fletcher Savings and Trust Co of Indianapolis 41.80. Estimated road cost is 5840.
The Putnam county council met at 10 o clock in the courthouse and appropriated funds for the county government for the year ending December 31, 1930. Allocations include County Health care expense 150 dollars, Township Poor 3500, County Farm Employees 750, County Farm Supplies 590, and the Lon Chism Highway 600. Present were John Sinclair chairman H C Morrison TD Brookshire George Akers William Bo Bridges HH Foster and Rey Hillis.
DePauw University senior Cole Franklin of Columbia City won the Fifth zone constitutional oratorical contest held at Dundee High School near Chicago. Notre Dame’s Charela Lee took second place as contestants from Indians, Miners, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin competed. Six area winners advance to the Los Angeles finale on June 19 with prizes from 400 to 1500 dollars. Cole’s topic was The Constitution and National Procedure.
Nearly 300 Indiana Democrats gathered at French Lick Springs with talk of imminent election victories. Names floated for secretary of state include Virgil M Simmons Peters campaign manager, and Arthur J Hamrick. Speakers tonight feature Towett Shouse and Frederick Van Nuys amid party strife over nominations.
C Gillen Greencastle lawyer and Democratic nominee for representative to United States Congress will deliver the Memorial Day address Sunday afternoon in Cayuga at the town service.
