Charles J. Arnold recalls personal mischiefs and long faded friendships as he walks through a spring morning. He recounts shaving gaffes and a neighbor Ralph Denny who once organized a neighborhood band and later pivoted to vaudeville. The piece blends humor with nostalgia for youth and music.
The Washington township Sunday schools held their annual convention at Manhattan Christian church on May 18. A helpful program entertained attendees as reports show growing interest in township Sunday school work. Officers for the coming year are Charles Hill president Mrs. James Skelton vice president and Myrtle Johnson secretary.
Elijah Young requests a judge award of 1000 in Putnam circuit court as he sues Raymond Alexander over an alleged March 21 beating. Young, the step-father-in-law of Alexander, says the dispute arose from a demand to buy a grave vault for Mrs. Young, who died March 25. Mrs Young was Alexander’s mother-in-law. Alexander previously paid a fine in Bra city court for assault and battery.
Warren J. Yount and Indiana University supervise a new arithmetic test for grades 4 5 and 6 to guide a revised course of study. Fifteen Indiana school systems will use it along with the Stanford achievement test. The composite nine subject exam measures progress at the start and end of the school year in thousands of U S schools.
Work began on a new loading platform at the Greencastle post office. The Heath Construction Company is erecting the addition on the building's south side and plans completion within ninety days of the start.
Arrangements by the Greencastle Chamber of Commerce set landings for the annual Indiana Air Tour on June 17 at Greencastle Municipal Airport near the old Browning farm. More than forty planes are to arrive at 1 30 p m and depart at 2 30 p m. Proceeds from Buddy Poppy sales by the VFW benefit local veterans relief in Putnam county and the Christian church Sunday school group.
Indianapolis May 22 The state board of charities will study the killing of William Julian 52 Greencastle prisoner at State Prison Two prison board members asked the charities board to investigate the slaying by Tom 46 South Bend inmate who reportedly confessed beating Julian to death with an iron rod after a sheep counting argument Brown said the inquiry will cover overcrowded conditions in the insane ward and a possible transfer to the prison proper Foley Moor man and BE Foley noted congestion will be discussed at Michigan City during a planned meeting to consider adding a 400 cell block to ease overcrowding
The Prudential Life Insurance Co of America filed suit in Putnam circuit court to foreclose a $6,576 mortgage on 122 acres of Monroe township farmland owned by Charles N. Holland. The note originated in 1920 for $7,500 due March 1925, with extensions and partial payments claimed. The entire principal and interest allegedly became due in March 1930 and remain unpaid. Also noted: Archie Delph, 25, left the hospital after back injury to walk toward Greencastle along state road 43. Mrs George Walker underwent a major operation at Putnam County Hospital. Dr Thomas Noble assisted by Dr W M McGaughey performed it. Herbert Craver had a minor operation at the same hospital.
Stephen Maxwell Corey of Urbana Illinois is named associate professor of education at DePauw University for next year. At 26 he is one of the youngest to earn the Doctor of Philosophy in education and has studied the effects of exercise on learning, attracting nationwide attention.
A fourteen week character education program run by De Pauw University's religious education department closes next week in Greencastle. Over 800 Green Castle children in grades 1 to 6 received 25 minute weekly instruction taught by university students. The project, supervised by Professor E R Bartlett, used discussion for grades 3 to 6 and storytelling for grades 1 and 2. Ten Treasure Chests will be sent to the Philippines to foster goodwill and cross race understanding among island schoolchildren.
Mr and Mrs Richard Coen of Kansas City Missouri were injured in a car crash on the National road last Sunday and are recovering at Putnam County Hospital.
Items from 80 years ago include a junior-senior high school reception at Utopian Hall and a student play My Lord in Livery. Pauline Roberts visits with her parents Frank and Mrs. Roberts. George Dobbs’s car broke a drive chain and was towed in Alec Lane. Rev George H L Beeman starts as Presbyterian pastor, formerly from Akron Central Church.
Noble J. Johnson congressman of the fifth district will be Memorial Day speaker at Forest Hill cemetery on May 30. Ernest Stoner and Edward Brockway head the speaker committee with plans to finalize arrangements at a Monday night meeting at Lakin Funeral Home. A J Duff chairs transportation and asks G A R members with cars to notify him or wait at the courthouse south side at 1 pm May 30. veterans needing transport to the parade should call Duff for a car.
DePauw University baseball closes their season with a home game against Wabash on McKeen field tomorrow afternoon. The Tigers, having a rough season, previously beat Wabash 10 to 3 aided by fielding errors. Wildman likely starts on the mound with Hornaday catching.
Dr A Lewis Frazier of Danville Illinois sues Richard Coen of Kansas City Missouri for $1000 in damages from an auto crash on State Road 40 east of Mt Meridian. Frazier claims Coen’s negligent passing caused the rear damage and injuries to all in the Coen car. Coen and occupants were hospitalized. Danville occupants escaped injury.
Oakley Decker and Hazel Briggs are involved in a domestic matter at a home on West Walnut Street. Decker, 34, and Briggs, 19, are linked to a freight line incident at their residence.
Weather outlook shows possible showers in the northwest starting late tonight or Friday, spreading to central and northeast areas Friday. Clouds increase in the far south, with cooler temperatures overnight in extreme northwest and cooler conditions on Friday across the north and central zones.
Putnam county vigilantes invite all to a Friday rifle and pistol shoot at Eugene Keller's farm south of town. Three top scorers in each match advance to the June state meet. Don McLean and DePauw military department oversee the event. Contestants should arrive by 8 AM. luncheon will be served by Charles Crawley.
DePauw ROTC seniors were awarded reserve army commissions and took the oath on Blackstock field. Courtland C. Gillen administered the oath to the cadets as Col. Dougherty of the 84th division presented a saber to the unit’s most efficient cadet after a competitive drill.
Eighteen children were examined at the Third Ward building by Dr John A Egan and Dr O J Overstreet with Mary Agnes Miller county nurse and Parent Teachers Association members. The tests check children entering city schools next fall to limit remediable defects.

London May 22 A telegraph dispatch from Bombay reports police forcibly ejected Indian Nationalist salt raiders from their Untadi camp near Dharasana after leaders refused evacuation. Volunteers aided the injured as clashes continued with raiders attempting to breach electrified fences.
Aboard the Graf Zeppelin the giant airship crossed the equator at 8 39 am ship time marking the first time a lighter than air craft has done so. Passengers cheered as Dr Hugo Eckener reported the milestone while the ship approached Pernambuco Brazil where a brief stop is planned.
Mrs G L Newby of Indianapolis composed The Old Quilt a song by a former Greencastle girl. The tune is now broadcast on Indianapolis stations andWLW in Cincinnati.
