Charles J. Arnold reflects on past criticisms of the courthouse sidewalks and recounts a morning encounter with a subscriber. The column also notes DePauw finishing third in the state collegiate track meet, Butler, Notre Dame, and Indiana results, a dog shooting incident involving Ott Dobbs and Oil can damage, and a cloudy, rainy Sunday forecast.
Mrs Otis Browning sister of G Will Conklin accompanied by two of his daughters traveled to Chicago to see him at Edward Hines Jr Government Hospital Maywood near Chicago. They report his throat ailment has kept him ill for months yet his condition now appears encouraging. The hospital is among the most modern government facilities.
Mrs. Emma R. Wright aged 70 of Madison township died Sunday morning at 9 30 in her home after a nine week illness from heart disease. Surviving are four sons Charles Bryan Maynard and John Harvey all at home, a daughter Mrs C C Conn- ett of Franch Lick, two daughters in law and several siblings. Funeral services Tuesday at 2 pm in the residence with burial at Long Branch cemetery and Rev Samuel Dean of Indianapolis officiating. Mr and Mrs Badger Williamson of Indianapolis visited Greencastle Sunday.
Greencastle to observe Poppy Day May 24 as Memorial Day tribute. American Legion Auxiliary chairwoman Mrs. Gwin Ensign says poppies go on sale May 2 and 4 citywide to honor World War dead and aid disabled veterans and families. Poppies are made by disabled veterans and sale is run by volunteers across the city.
The Indiana Board of Agriculture maintains the National Swine Show with the Indiana State Fair from August 30 to September 1. Premiums totaling 24969 dollars are offered in the swine department. It may be the last year the event is held in connection with the fair for several years.
Government to install three beacon lights in Putnam county to guide the St Louis to New York air mail service. Locations include sections in Washington township and near the Brown ing Farm close to Greencastle. Service tentatively starts December 1 with practice flights in late November.
Marshall Field and Company of Chicago files for $2,670 judgment in Putnam Circuit Court against Bert Sandy of Cloverdale. The suit cites a November 1917 judgment of $1,500 in favor of Field, with no payment since, plus six percent interest on the original $1,074.50 debt.
DePauw wins third in the Indiana State Track meet at Notre Dame. Ramsey leads with 10 high points for DePauw’s 181 total as sprinters win 100 and 220 yard dashes and Button takes shot put. Julian places fourth in the two mile. Kilgore ties for second in pole vault. Ransburg fourth in 120 high hurdles. Notre Dame tops, Indiana second, Purdue fourth.
R A Masons called meeting in Greencastle chapter No 22 on Monday at 7 30 p m. Mark and Past Master degrees to be conferred. F Mathes high priest and E E Caldwell secretary announce details.
Arrangements by A. T. Hillis G. W. Starr and others for a reunion of the boys and girls of thirty years ago in Greencastle. The Indiana Volunteers recall includes two Putnam county companies from Green Castle and Roachdale. Also note marriage of Christy Jane McCullough and B F Corwin at the Ostrom home and James P Hughes to deliver Lincoln's Gettysburg address at Memorial Day events.
Richard Coen of Kansas City and Mrs. Coen plus Mrs. Warner were severely cut and bruised after a collision east of Mt. Meridian while trying to pass a car. An infant escaped injury. The other vehicle carried Dr. A L Frazier L L Jordan and George Nurse of Danville IL who had slight injuries. All were hospitalized with severe cuts. Coen suffered several broken ribs and a concussion.
Archie Delph 25 a farmer on the Mike Kelly farm south of town sustained a severe back wound near the left shoulder when caught on a mower guard Saturday evening. A state truck behind him pulled aside for a passing car and the guard struck Delph as he walked along state road 45 south of town. He was treated by Dr Hutcheson and taken to Putnam County Hospital. initial fears of lung puncture faded as his condition was not serious.
Committees from patriotic organizations in the city meet at Lakin Funeral Home at 7 20 tonight to arrange a Memorial Day program.
Cloudy conditions persist tonight with rain in the north and central areas. Cooler temperatures in the south and central regions. Thursday looks partly cloudy with a slight warming in the extreme north and west central portions.
Women abandon the old tan as the 1930 outdoor season opens. They report sunburn aged the skin, and months in beauty parlors could not reverse it. Nature for poets cows and tourists, but art is better for faces says these women.
A statewide advisory board of Indiana religious leaders is formed for The Hoosier Preacher, an inter denomi national magazine debuting in June. Rev Earl Daniels editors the publication. B H Bruner of Green Castle is on the board with future inclusion of other denominations. The magazine features sermons, minister bios, and aims to aid the Indiana pulpit without financial obligations to any single group.
The Putnam County Credit Association will hold a dinner meeting this evening at 6:30 at the Greencastle Country Club. The program includes an address by President Russell Brown, a directors meeting, and talks by members and non members on association benefits and viewpoints from local merchants.
Greencastle business men hosted Lieut. Col. N F E Bowman of Ft. Thomas Kentucky and Major S G Guyer of Ft. Hayes Ohio U S Army officers visiting for the annual inspection of the DePauw R O T C unit The inspection review occurred this afternoon at 430 at Blackstock Field
Sixteen dead all negroes. Red Cross and Arkansas National Guard rush relief to stricken area. Two camps opened at Smackover and Staryland to shelter the homeless as levees fail and refugees swarm roads. National Guard units bring cots nurses doctors and ambulances.
Election of officers at the annual Putnam County Council of Religious Education in Roachdale featured Prof BE Bartlett DePauw as president and E T Albertson as state secretary present as principal speaker. Other officers included Harold Storm Fillmore or Lester Miller Coatesville as vice president, Madeline O'Dell Fillmore as secretary treasurer, and division superintendents for Children Young People and Adults. A supper conference followed the sessions served by the Women of Roachdale.
