The Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs drew about 50,000 spectators. Four bootleggers were sentenced in Indianapolis federal court, with fines and prison terms. The piece also notes a DePauw Junior Prom success and local Greencastle street improvements.
Federal and state officials will begin cow testing in Greencastle township Monday. Over the last three weeks, federal veterinarians with one man from each township tested all cows for tuberculosis. The latest tests show few cows with symptoms and overall results are very satisfactory. Dr. A. T. Sigler will assist. Dr. Cushow leads the federal team.
DePauw blanked Ball College 1 to 0 at McKeen Field. Wildman pitched well with strong support, allowing three hits. Roetken limited DePauw to four hits as the Tigers won with a seventh inning run that produced the decisive score.
DePauw sends eight athletes under coach L. C. Buchheit to the Indiana State meet at Notre Dame. The Tiger relay quartet Ramsay Spina Melbourne Axtell Ransburg Julian Kilgore Button join the trip as Notre Dame and Indiana loom as strong rivals among 125 entrants from 12 colleges.
Senator Andrew M. Durham of Greencastle gave a memorable after dinner talk at the Shelbyville Rotary Club luncheon. He is longtime fixture in the legislature for Putnam and Montgomery counties and regaled attendees with whizbang stories. Russell G. East introduced him and noted his nickname Bull Durham.
The forecast indicates probable rain tonight or Sunday in the south portion with central areas expecting rain on Sunday. Cooler conditions are noted tonight in the south and extreme east portions while the north remains partly cloudy to cloudy.
The Indianapolis 500 will feature four cylinder motors and front wheel drive in the May 30 race at the Speedway. Engineers explore past designs while 366 cubic inch engines push the field, reviving a prior era as sixes and eights join fours in a new power plant mix. The race, long a testing ground for automotive progress, again promises engineering breakthroughs influencing future passenger cars.
Funeral services for Mrs. Carvie Belle Farrow wife of Marion Farrow will be Sunday afternoon at 2 30 o clock in Brick Chapel Church with burial at the local cemetery. The Rebekah lodge will conduct the grave ritual. She is survived by her husband and daughter Mrs. Leslie Sears. Rev C L Airhart Crawfordsville will officiate. Pallbearers are Earl Arnold William Dittemore Charles Merkel Robert Pierce Louis Schachtel and William Brown.
Aerial progress pageant features 15 planes from Cleveland performing at Stout Field and Mars Hill Airport in Indianapolis this afternoon and tomorrow. Top stunt pilots participate including Miss Frances Harrell who will perform the death spin, a feat she claims as the most difficult. Red Jackson, record holder for three weeks aloft in a Curtis Robin, is among the aviators.
The Putnam County Council of Religious Education holds its annual Sunday school convention at Roachdale Methodist Church. Opening at 2 15 with Doris E. Denny presiding, the program features devotionals, music, and a series of division meetings on religious education and youth work led by local pastors and educators.
Twenty years ago in Greencastle Miss Laura Town planned a junior piano recital at the music school tomorrow evening. Robert Dorsey of Putnamville wed Miss Agnes Ketcham of Indianapolis on Saturday. Bishop E H Hughes and Mrs Hughes from San Francisco attend DePauw commencement events.
Crowds gathered in Louisville for the 56th Kentucky Derby as forecast rain threatened a wet track. Gallant Fox plus Tannery drew heavy betting amid a strong field of fifteen, with a fast track expected if showers held off and temperatures near 60.
Annual inspection of the DePauw ROTC by U S Army officers will be held next Monday at Blackstock field. Lieut Colonel N E Bowman of Ft Habas Kentucky and Major 8 G Guyer of Ft Hayes Ohio will inspect. Citizens are invited to attend the 4 50 pm review. The unit has historically ranked highly in the Fifth Army Corps Area.
County Agent Floyd Miller reports widespread crop and poultry damage this spring from crows. Losses focus on newly planted corn and young chickens. He advises bright movable objects in chicken lots and changing them regularly to deter the birds. Poison bait may be used in corn fields but kept away from domestic birds.
Indiana tour director Lee Hottel said fourteen cities are on the June 16 to 21 itinerary with completion expected soon. Ft Wayne’s Guy Means Airport is chosen for an overnight stop, and C F Cornish will handle entertainment. Michigan City prepares a new field and Evansville seeks timing to dedicate its airport during Tour Week. Walker Winslow adds a twentieth plane, piloted by himself. Greencastle slated for visit.
Purdue’s Ross Ad e stadium will be completed for the next season with seating for 25 300. A. E. Kemmer of Lafayette secured the bid at 66 400 dollars after bidding from North Construction Co Vaughan Construction Co and Levering & Longbotham. Work began within hours of award.
The Central Trust Company as guardian for Elmer A Chadwick reports the sale of the Chadwick farm located in Marion township six miles east of Greencastle on the Indianapolis road to James Otha Miller. Miller has moved to the farm and will make it his future home. The consideration was not made public. Miss Mary Agnes Miller, Putnam county nurse, was in Indianapolis this afternoon.
A mob of hundreds dragged the body of George Johnson, 30, Negro, from a cabin where he was slain by a Sheriff's posse. They dragged him two miles to the Negro church district, hanged him from a tree, and burned the body. The mob also attacked Mrs Margaret Kolar, but a separate Kentucky court case followed.
Greencastle High School baseball fell 17 to 7 to Park Preparatory School of Indianapolis in the annual homecoming. Evan Crawley started on the mound and lasted briefly, allowing nine runs before Tobin and Grimes relieved. Charles Howard led Greencastle with a three base hit.
