Tra Clouser of Montgomery county won the Democratic nomination for joint senator from Putnam and Montgomery counties in Tuesday's primary by about 200 votes. He carried Putnam by 70 and Montgomery by about 130 with most Montgomery precincts reported.
The condition of James H. Hughes in Terre Haute's St. Anthony hospital after a Saturday automobile accident is reported to be satisfactory. He spent a night in the hospital and his status is described as as good as could be expected given his injuries. Judge and Mrs. Hughes had traveled to Greencastle then returned to be with their son.
The Greencastle Rotary Club marks ten years since its founding with a 6:50 PM dinner at the Country Club. About 100 attendees expected. W. L. Hughes of DePauw will host. A surprise program features local and visiting talent. after dinner, dancing in the reception room. Rotary wheel table design and blue and gold colors to be used. Harry Freeman, founder president now in Indianapolis, is absent. Jacob Eitel serves as current president with 52 members. entertainment committee includes William Peek and others.
William Wetz, formerly a local grocer, will open a fruit and vegetable shop in the Heath building across from the Herald office this weekend. He promises thorough knowledge of the business and splendid service. The tuberculosis clinic at Putnam County Hospital, postponed from May 14, will now be held May 21 with Dr John Stygall in charge.
Greencastle High School baseball beat Mooresville 4 to 2 on Tuesday afternoon at Mooresville diamond. Tobin struck out 16 and hit a three bagger, Gross added a three bagger, Crawley made an unassisted game ending double play in the seventh. Greencastle hosts Spencer on Thursday at McKean Field hoping to avenge an Owen County loss.

Harry Wells son of the Central National bank won the Republican nomination for Greencastle township trustee in the Tuesday primary defeating Elmer Crawley. Nominations for assessor went to Henry Offair. Other county contests listed include Russell Township and Clinton Township trustees and assessors with multiple candidates and vote tallies.
Twenty years ago in Greencastle Democratic primaries produced narrow trustee races across townships. Names like John Moreland and Ray Clodfelter were decided by a few votes, with results listed for Jackson Clinton and Franklin townships. Weather forecast notes chances of showers and cooler temperatures with strong southerly winds.
In Putnam County primary ballots several Democratic and Republican nominees ran unopposed. Democrats: Prosecutor John H. James Coroner Frank J. Rooker Second district George G. Bushy Fourth district George Ensign.
Courtland C. Gillen of this city was nominated by the Democrats of the Fifth Congressional District in the primary election Tuesday as their candidate for Congress. Unofficial returns from the counties in the district show Gillen with an overwhelming majority.
In the Republican primary four contests were decided. David Braden won the sheriff nomination by 205 votes over John R. Cox and Raymond R. Hammond. Essie Benefiel led Dooma York for Recorder by 1,120 votes. Elvin H. Harlan topped John W. Porter for assessor by 471 votes. H. A. Sherrill won the second district commissioner race by 1,358 votes over Oliver Shonkwiler. Noble Johnson defeated Randolph H. Mayes 2,267 to 190 in Congress. Wilbur S. Donner carried Putnam and Montgomery for senator by 796 votes.
J Frank Chadwick of Montgomery county was nominated by Republicans for the Putnam Montgomery Joint-senatorial district and defeated two opponents including Wilbur Donner of Greencastle. Vote totals show Chadwick 2 445 for Putnam Mont, Donner 1 866, Rosser 1 534 total.
In Putnam County, Judge James P. Hughes won the Democratic nomination for the 61st Judicial Circuit with a wide margin over Andrew F. Durham. Other results include John W. Herod as Clerk, William A. Cooper as Auditor, and W. T. Handy as Treasurer, with Eggers and ONeal securing additional nominations. The precincts largely followed countywide trends.
