Charles J. Arnold notes elimination day in a primary election with clattering candidate efforts and light barbershop banter. He recalls dog bite jokes and the shift in barber shop hours as voters prepare, while urging election boards to ignore unofficial ballots.
A large Walnut street grounds crowd last evening saw Vogel and Hill’s Big Honey Boy Minstrel open the season in Martinsville tonight. Paul Hill, a former Greencastle man, expressed pride in starting in his hometown. The all male cast featured comedians singers and dancers with a 7:30 band concert and an 8:15 main show followed by a sleight of hand artist.
The annual May Day Child Health parade is set for Wednesday at 2 PM led by Greencastle High School band with Miss Mary Agnes Miller in charge. Schools compete for a silver loving cup from the Putnam County Tuberculosis Association, and marching order runs from the band down College and Washington to Walnut and Indiana streets.
The Amo Baptist church was struck by lightning during a rainstorm and burned to the ground around 2 o clock. Volunteers gathered to fight the fire but could not stop the blaze which consumed the large frame building though it was partially insured. Pastor Gilbert McCammack of Pelle Union leads the congregation and awaits word on rebuilding.

The Greencastle high school Girls Glee Club directed by Mr. Umfleet travels to Terre Haute to join eight Indiana Illinois clubs in the annual May Festival Week contest. They will sing in the evening concert and assist in the cantata with the Teachers College chorus.
Greencastle high school presents The Love Pirate a nautical musical comedy in three acts with music by Bill Blanchard and dialogue by Donald Grimes Clifford Frazier. Cast includes Newadoy, Frenchman, Sailors Trio, Townsgirl Mary Louise Moffett, Captain McConnell and Pirate Captain Gwendolyn Thompson with M. L. Moffett and M. A. Inman among chaperones.
Neely J. O Hair resigns after years heading real estate and insurance at Citizens Trust Co to join Landers and Landers as a special representative in the surety and contract bond department serving Metropolitan Casualty Insurance Co. Simpson Stoner to succeed him. Mr Stoner, formerly with a major insurer, returns to Citizens Trust. Mr and Mrs W A Patterson announce birth of daughter Katie Lou to Mr and Mrs Walter O Neal of Muncie, formerly of this city.
Cloverdale residents Mr. Henry N. Coffman and Minnie Coffman reserve seats on an all-pullman Prairie Farmer sponsored 5500 mile farmer vacation train. They will visit major Pacific Northwest cities, travel across western Canada, spend a day on the Pacific between Seattle and Vancouver, and tour Jasper and Glacier National Parks before departing Chicago August 16 with 500 others from Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin.
Greencastle High School meets Mooresville on the postponed Monday game at McKeenfield then faces Spencer on Thursday. Tobin will start likely again, with Gross catching. lineup features Crawley Grimes Tobin Gross Comstock Crawley Campbell Masten H Gross.
Greencastle firefighters were called shortly before 11 PM to an interurban car near the Monon overhead bridge. The freight car with three others caught fire. a large hole burned in its floor before flames were extinguished using chemicals. An overheated motor is suspected as the cause. damage confined to the car floor and motor.
Mrs J R Miller of Greencastle was chosen vice president of the Home Missionary Society for the Greencastle district at the Terre Haute convention. Three watches and cash were stolen from Dr Eugene Hawkins office last night. Will and Mrs Lockwood, long in China, arrived to visit Mrs Lockwood's parents Dr and Mrs S B Town. S A Hazelett returns from Columbia Tennessee with forty Jersey cows acquired there.
Unconfirmed dispatches from Rangoon report a possible death toll well over 6,000 after a deadly earthquake and fire devastated Rangoon and Pegu. Seventy killed in Rangoon. about 500 feared dead at Pegu. tidal wave and disrupted communications hindered full casualty counts.
A unique religious gathering at the Methodist church Friday features the Woman's Foreign Missionary Society good will service. Messages from India, China, Africa and Malasia will be shared by Norma Cravens of Malaysia and others.
Sheriff Edward Fielforge investigated at John Robe's east Anderson Street home and seized an Essex coupe with Indianapolis license 140-068. The sheriff will hold the car five days before advertising it. Tribby wrecker moved the vehicle to the county garage. the car is believed stolen and abandoned.
Greencastle Putnam County 4 H club members plus chaperones travel to Lafayette for the annual state roundup. Twelve girls from Greencastle and three from Putnamville, eight Greencastle high school boys, compete in baking judging dress review and corn livestock judging with plans to return Thursday for the boys and Saturday for the girls.
Dr W Vernon Lytle visits Washington DC for the International Congress of Mental Hygiene the first such U S conference. In Jeffersonville George A Shearer is critically ill at Putnam County Hospital after a stroke in the county commissioners' room last Thursday afternoon.
Fair weather greeted Putnam County voters as they trooped to the polls for the biennial primary selecting congressional county and precinct committee nominees for November. Officials reported heavier early turnout in Greencastle precints with about 75 percent of voters Democrats and roughly half of ballots cast by women in observed wards.
A report of James H Hughes death proved incorrect as he rallies after a severe auto crash near Terre Haute. The son of Judge James P Hughes suffers a fractured skull and broken hip but shows steady improvement with doctors optimistic about his recovery. Judge Hughes hurried to Terre Haute, returning after a brief home visit. Jimmy Hughes remains at St Anthony’s Hospital in Terre Haute.
