Charles J. Arnold recalls signage mishaps and a Green Castle memory of misspelled signs. He recounts a Greencastle incident with missing clothes and valuables, then notes Indianapolis alumni planning to pressure Dr. Oxnam, while Day festivities proceed successfully.
Beginning in May the Greencastle post office will provide mail service to New York and eastern points saving 12 hours on Greencastle to New York. The east bound Pennsylvania fast mail train will start receiving mail here today via catcher service at 1 04 PM and New York mail carried by the Pennsylvania mail train will reach here at 4 10 PM. The two trains improve Greencastle mail to New York with the fast train expected to reach by noon.
John W. Vogal known as the Minstrel King brings Vogel Hill s Big Hon ey Boy Minstrel Show to public at Mal under a water proof tent on west Walnut street show grounds. Admission is thirty cents for adults and fifteen cents for children under twelve. Show starts 8 15 p m with doors open early. A noon parade and 7 30 p m concert accompany the event.
The weather outlook notes a slightly warmer night in the northern portion of the area. Sunday will bring increasing winds from the north and possible increases in the south portion, with warmer conditions in the north and central areas.
DePauw University hosts May Day events with a track and field meet at Blackstock field, a May Day Pageant written by Mary Musselman, and a court of honor led by Emma Jean Burke. Lantern parade, theater presentation, and Mother’s Day services cap the campus celebration.
Mrs. Mary Parker aged 89 died this afternoon at her daughter’s home 105 West Columbia street after six weeks of illness from a tumor. A longtime Green Castle resident since 1861 she was the widow of Allan Parker who died seven years ago. Survived by daughter Mrs. Jennie Nelson of Brazil and son Oliver Parker of Decatur Illinois. Funeral plans not set. Also note: George A. Shearer examiner for the State Tax Board in Jeffersonville remained in critical condition after a stroke in Putnam County hospital.
At the Jackson and Liberty streets intersection Friday around 7 PM two vehicles collided head on as drivers attempted to turn onto Liberty. Robert Stevens of Greencastle route 4 drove a Ford coupe into a pole while Donald Whitted of Sycamore street drove a Chevrolet that veered into a yard hitting a house. a 10 year old bystander suffered head bruises and was treated at a local doctor’s office. Officers Tom Morgan and Otto Dobbs investigated the scene.

DePauw edged Indiana Central 5 to 4 in a Friday baseball contest. Tiger pitcher Wildman struck out nine, with Shaffer collecting three doubles and contributing at bats. Final score shows DePauw 5 Indiana Central 4 as Wildman and Hornady led the effort.

20 Years Ago in Greencastle Herald notes Saturday will be cleanup day. Miss Belle A Mansfield resigns as Dean of DePauw Music School due to ill health and will devote time to art. Prof R G McCutchan of Baker University to fill the post. Prof R A Ogg resigns as Kokomo schools superintendent after twelve years to take up farming. President William Howard Taft will pass through Greencastle tomorrow.
Tobin pitched well holding Worthington to four hits as Gross doubled twice and reached four times driving in three runs in the third inning. Green Castle improves to 2–0 behind solid defense and strong hitting from Tobin and Gross while Spencer beat Worthington earlier.
The Public Service Commission approved changing Fillmore station from agent to non agency, with hearings in City Hall on April 23. The move will shift crew headquarters to Greencastle and abandon Liggett station in Vigo County, reducing passenger and freight business justification for an agent at Fillmore. Mrs. Clay Robinson has served as Fillmore agent in recent years.
Missionaries from Africa India China and Malaya under Women's Foreign Missionary society of the Methodist church tour four states of the Northwestern Branch. On Friday May 9 they visit Greencastle new Methodist church for afternoon and evening sessions with Miss Norma Craven from Penang Malaya as principal speaker. Dinner planned at 6 o'clock and women urged to attend May 8 date.
Federal grand jury indicts 46 defendants from Terre Haute and Clinton in a Vermilion and Vigo counties liquor ring case. The group, led by Joe Traum and Jacob Traum, ran up to 38 stills, trafficked sugar alcohol, and operated from Illinois to Kentucky and Missouri with a protection system. Defendants include Wilmot Connors and Dominic Gerino. arrest of remaining defendants to follow.
J C McCurry Furniture unveils a rug turned into a fish pond in the window. A motor drives a fountain, water circulates as goldfish swim, proving the rug is waterproof.

Washington May 3. The Hoover administration seeks ratification of the London naval treaty without reservations. Hearings begin Monday with Hale’s naval affairs committee and Borah’s foreign relations panel to study two key issues: cruiser policy and the escalator clause. Officials warn that senate reservations could kill the agreement, and aim to press for passage as written.
Directors of the Chamber of Commerce and all committee chairmen will meet Monday at 7 30 PM at the First National Bank. Those wishing to bring important matters before the Chamber are invited to attend.
Greencastle Country Club members will hold a golf tournament on Sunday using last year’s handicaps. Participants should hand in score cards to the committee composed of Glenn Lyon, S. C. Sayers and N. C. O'Rair for processing.
