Bloomington youths nabbed in bicycle thefts near Greencastle

Bloomington police recovered two bicycles stolen from the city and found the riders Doulun Bushee and Jack Benny 14 and 13 respectively. They admitted taking the wheels from Bloomington and abandoning them near Greencastle. A farmer found them and stored them in a garage. bikes belong to Dunbar and Kirkman.

Ben Hur Life Association Adopts Name Change at Close of Meeting

Crawfordsville June 27 The Ben Hur Life Association wrapped its 1930 convention with approval of a law committee report to rename the Supreme Tribe of Ben Hur to the Ben Hur Life Association. W H Owen Crawfordsville Col FE Bryson Covington Ky and William L Denman Green Castle were re elected to the executive committee. The next quadrennial convention will be in Crawfordsville in 1934.

Death takes Greencastle woman today

The death of Mrs. Mary Ellen Shafer 74 a resident of Greencastle since 1899 occurred at 1 o clock this morning at 508 Hanna street after a long illness. She was born in Miama town Ohio and was a Methodist Church worker and Twentieth Century club member. Surviving are her husband a daughter Mrs Thomas Harris of Baldwin Kansas and four brothers John W Taber of Los Angeles Calif Funeral services will be Sunday at 2:30 with Rev Albert E Monger in charge. Interment will be in Forest Hill cemetery.

Seven Putnam Boys Granted Rector Scholarships

Seven Putnam county boys are among 230 high school graduates receiving Rector Scholarships from DePauw University for next year. The students include Hubert Dirks Robert Dicks and Richard Knight of Greencastle Cloyd Davis Boswell of Redsville Wayne Pickins Dordsett Belle Union Donald William Hart Clinton Center and Clarence Overstreet Russellville. Each scholarship covers four years tuition and fees and is valued at 800 dollars. The Rector Foundation funds other awards for freshmen and 16 special scholarships were granted this year.

In Kokomo Indiana a groom and bride wed after a parish visit with the bride’s mother present. Hours later the minister learned he had recorded the wrong name on the certificate, causing the bride to wed her mother-in-law. Reverend Wesley Pearce of the First Baptist Church performed the ceremony.

Greencastle Barber Files Divorce Suit

Rolland Taulman, a Greencastle barber, sues for divorce from Clara Taulman in Putnam circuit court alleging desertion and cruel and inhuman treatment. They married January 25 1928 and separated June 7 1980 after claims of constant quarreling, temper, suspected infidelity, and ongoing letters with other men. Mrs Taulman left for Florida.

State Policeman Escorts Elderly Driver to Indianapolis

Elmer Baker of Long Beach California an about eighty year old man was moved from Putnam county jail to Indianapolis to face charges of operating a motor vehicle without a proper license. He admits buying the car in Indianapolis and using a license plate only on the vehicle. The seller of the automobile is to be arrested and tried with him.

Washington June 27 The Hoover administration fights a Senate crisis to push a limited World War pension bill after the veto of a liberal measure. House backed the administration plan 361 to 4 while Hoover veto was sustained 182 to 188. First Band Concert of Season at Roachdale

The first Roachdale band concert of the season was held Wednesday evening and drew many patrons. The crowd complained about the band stand location placed on the pavement at the west end of the business section. The next concert is scheduled for Wednesday July 2.

Household Poison Attempt Ends in Narrow Escape

Leonard Todd, once a Crawfordsville resident, ingested multiple doses of poison after a May divorce filing by Ida Todd. Five of his six children were nearby when a daughter alerted relatives. Doctors treated him with an emetic and he began to recover as sheriffs investigated a bottle of poisoned alcohol and rat poison found at the scene.
