He jokes about weather and prizefights with Godfrey Carnera, and quips about Hoover prosperity making vacation time real. Godfrey reportedly devoured two fried chickens.
State funds fuel a summer construction surge at Bloomington. A massive science building rises on campus, a new Union building starts soon, and a large sorority house for Kappa Alpha Theta is planned. Additional smaller projects dot the campus as alumni gifts aid expansion.
Purdue University expert J J Davis heads the entomology department and urges thorough grain bin cleaning before new harvest. Remove old grain a week or two ahead, clean the bin, spray cracks with kerosene, clean sacks, thresh and store the grain promptly to prevent weevil infestation.
Indianapolis June 24. State fair awards for 1920 total 173460. J Barker secretary announced. Prize money for harness races 56500. Stock awards include 23374.75 for horses and mules 26331.13 cattle 8024 sheep 23669 swine 8548 poultry rabbits and pigeons. Agriculture horticulture foriculture apiary entomology noted.
Estel Brothers aged 22 son of Mr and Mrs Thomas Brothers was seriously injured when a mowing machine wheel ran over him on his father's farm 12 miles northwest of Greencastle. He was pulled by a tractor. a ditch caused the accident and he was taken to the Methodist hospital in Indianapolis with internal injuries.
Putnam county fair board discussed possibly abandoning the traditional county fair to focus on the Junior fair set for August 14 15 and 16. County agent Floyd Miller attended in the county courthouse office with board members leaning toward canceling the county event and resuming planning for the Junior fair.
Residents found a burned 1928 Chevrolet coach on a country road south east of Putnamville about 6 pm Monday. The car, stripped of identifiers and with license plates removed, was saturated with gasoline and set ablaze. Deputies suspect theft and arson as investigators consider insurance fraud. officers note possible related stolen Chevrolets. The car was moved to Greencastle for inquiry.
Walker Siddons, 71, died at his rural Roachdale home Sunday afternoon from dropsy after four weeks of illness. Born 1859, he married Malinda Beal in 1881. they had one daughter Betty who died after marriage. Survived by four grandchildren. Funeral Tuesday at Barnard Baptist Church with burial in Barnard Cemetery.
A light rain broken a stretch of 100 degree heat. The cooler temperature brought relief to crops and pastures suffering during the two day heat wave.
Wheat cutting in the county will start this week as ripened grain is ready for harvest. Indications point to a big yield with favorable conditions boosting output.
Mrs. W. S. Lear of Tuscola Illinois was severely injured when her car and an Indianapolis driver's vehicle collided head on near Shady Lane. She was hurled through the windshield with scalp injuries and taken to Clay county hospital. the other occupants suffered only slight injuries as both cars were badly wrecked.
Della Hawkins sues Murray C. Garfield for 10000 damages for injuries in a May 1929 truck accident on State Road 36. The case, venued from Hendricks circuit, opened Monday with witnesses and conflicting eye descriptions. Jurors listed include Jasper Proctor and Rafe McGaughey among others.
Lawyers prepare legal agreements for a September bout between Max Schmeling and Jack Sharkey in New York. Arthur Bulow holds a 20 percent share in Schmeling’s earnings and will receive about $40,000 as his portion of the purse once documents are signed. A separate note reports the fall of the Pritchard child from a tree breaking her right arm.
Harold H Schroeder of Mobile Alabama was moved toward Indianapolis under guard to face a Marion County grand jury. He is accused of slaying an unidentified man May 21 and burning the body and allegedly admitted riding with two Indianapolis residents on the Rockville road the morning the car with the body was found.
A thundershower with gusty wind cooled Indianapolis by 14 degrees from 84 to 70 within an hour. About a quarter inch of rain fell, providing relief to sweltering residents before the sun returned and the temperature rose to 75 by noon.
The Southern Cross monoplane led by Major Charles Kingsford Smith was reported well past the Atlantic halfway mark on its 38 hour run to New York. Fern Cliffs sold for 1600 to Roy Hurst B Shanner and Charles Wright who plan a summer resort. Mayor John R Miller urged residents to cut weeds around property.
Miss Mary Agnes Miller will take two small children to Riley hospital for eye examination at the hospital clinic. The Child Welfare Association will fit the children with glasses. The association has 100 to be used this summer to correct physical defects among children whose parents cannot pay.
Mrs. Delilah Thomas, librarian, selects a list of unread books for summer treasure hunt reading for grades 1 to 12. Titles include My Sound Book, Tales from Peter Rabbit, Heidi, Pinocchio, Eskimo Island, Hans Brinker, Red Coats and Blue, and many others across grade levels, with selections from classical and modern authors.
Ruth Williams an 18 year old girl was found murdered with a butcher knife in her Brazil Indiana home. Neighbors heard cries and saw Fay Williams her brother 35 flee the scene in a suspected act of insanity. Police offered no motive and said Fay is mentally unstable and at large.
Dr. Aikman, longtime pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Brazil, announced his retirement effective August 1 after 46 years in ministry. He was ordained in Marion Ohio and served in Lebanon Indiana, Greenfield and Cincinnati Ohio, Huntington Pennsylvania, and Cape May New Jersey before coming to Brazil in 191.
Mose Joseph a Brazil junk and hides buyer stands trial in Clay circuit court on charges of petit larceny. Prosecutors claim he urged Reuben Waldrop and Lon McFadden to steal 100 pounds of copper wire from American Vitrified Products Co by promising a market for the stolen goods. He moved for a venue change from Judge T W Hutchinson as jury selection begins.
