Mothers and daughters present a Father and Son program at Putnamville M. E. church on Sunday morning June 22 at 10 30. Dr F E H Boldery of Bloomington will give an address and the event aims to interest the congregation and all attendees. A large crowd is expected.
A Ford truck owned by Putnam county and used on the county roads was stripped of parts worth several hundred dollars. The vehicle, in the possession of Cecil Craft, was stored in a barn south of Putnamville. Tires rims bulbs lenses tools and other items were taken. Sheriff Eitelforge and Deputy Alva Bryan investigated after being alerted Friday morning.
Jack Onkin of Terre Haute received one year and one day in federal prison at Leavenworth and a $500 fine for involvement in a Vigo and Vermilion counties liquor conspiracy. Ray Fonteannon and John Jensen also drew 18 months and fines. Roy Rice’s case was continued. Onkin was found guilty of selling machine guns to bootleggers and hijackers.
County Treasurer Gilbert Ogles opened bids at one o'clock and sold four road bond issues in Putnam County. First National Bank of Greencastle bought the Sylvia Hurst Road 10000 dollar issue with a 220 dollar premium and also the 25760 dollar C W Daggy Road issue with a 487 dollar premium. Sel Sudranski of Greencastle bought the 4000 dollar Leo Eastham Road issue with a 160 dollar premium. Breed Elliott and Harrison of Indianapolis purchased the 7500 dollar Evergreen Wallace Road issue with a 145 dollar premium. Harold James Crawley, grandson of Mr and Mrs Jacob Keifer of Greencastle, was named personal aide to Col Byrd at the Waldorf Astoria in New York. He has lived with his grandparents in Woodland, Washington, and enlisted in the Marines four years ago. He has served as librarian at the San Diego post for a year.
George W Havens a leading Ladoga resident and Indiana poultry businessman died at his home following a prolonged illness. He was born July 14 1857 near Indianapolis and moved to Ladoga in 1883. Survived by wife Emma daughter Opal Davis sister Jessie Trindle and grandson Edmund Davis. Funeral Saturday at 10 30 with Rev V D Ragan at Ladoga Presbyterian Church burial in Ladoga cemetery. He aided Havens Brothers poultry and Jaques Havens firms and built local lending ties.
Judge James P. Hughes of the Putnam circuit court appointed the First National Bank of Cloverdale as receiver for Nettie J. Hart, owner of a Cloverdale restaurant. The move followed a suit by Everett N. Larkin to foreclose a chattel mortgage and collect 1500 dollars. The mortgage, dated May 25 last year, covered the restaurant’s fixtures stock and merchandise at 46 East Main Street. Roy Bailey was added as a defendant over alleged mortgage or lien claims. The receiver appointment came after all parties consented.
Portland visitors learn Al Davis Varney pilot, famed for dropping comics to boys over Kiona Washington, is to be wed on wings. Three lads Chester Hinson 16 John 12 and Mat Swanson travel with him from Pasco to Portland for a round trip as thanks for his air contributions.
Deputy Sheriff Alva Bryan arrested Ballard Burns and Jesse Dickens about 10:30 p.m. near the Lora Buis filling station after they escaped Putnamville prison. Both men, ages 22 and 20, had prior sentences for petit larceny. They were jailed in Putnam County and face arraignment for escape and likely return to state prison for 1 to 5 years. Also listed: True-Hixon Lumber sues William Morgan for 98.44 to foreclose a lien on Green Castle lots. Charles and Mrs. McGaughey plan Chicago Rotary visit. Mrs Smith and daughters bude visiting relatives in Hunting and Bluffton.
Miss Josephine Wilkinson daughter of Mr and Mrs A H Wilkinson south College avenue and Dr Lyman Howe of Robinson IL were married last evening The Art Needlework club hosted a porch party for guests yesterday at Mrs Puene Light home The post office contract has been revoked.
Indiana investigators press for Harold Herbert Schroeder of Mobile to be arrested for arson in the High School road auto pyre murder. Evidence ties the burned victim to Tony Yowell of Manticoke Pa. and Mobile residence prior to May 24. A Mobile investigator's sudden departure spread hopes of imminent arrest.
Roy C. West, former secretary of the interior, is in Presbyterian hospital Chicago for a minor ailment. His condition is not serious. West also serves as president of the Board of Trustees at DePauw University in Greencastle.
Indiana announces four pavement widening projects totaling more than 14 miles to relieve traffic. The major effort is on the National Road U S Highway 40 west of Indianapolis, widening 4% miles of 18 foot pavement to 40 feet by adding 11 foot strips each side.
Lester Wells son of Mrs. Frank Wells of 109 West Liberty Street suffered the loss of his right leg after a train collision near Rensselaer Thursday. He underwent immediate amputation below the knee at Jasper County Hospital. condition reported good late Thursday evening. His sister Margaret and other family members traveled to the scene. James Terry, his companion, later returned home with Miss Wells and Miss Robinson.
A car rolled over Thursday evening north east of Greencastle at a sharp road turn under the Big Four Railroad arch. Driver Ora Finney and two companions, Clarence Meeks and another unnamed man, sustained cuts and bruises with Finney the most seriously injured. They were returning from a fishing trip when the crash occurred. Finney is brother of George Finney of the Star Barber Shop. The Greencastle Specials baseball team scheduled a Sunday game at Limedale Ball Park against Terre Haute Elks. their previous week’s win over Crawfordsville marked the season debut.
Fighting between nationalist forces and northern rebels continues on key railway arteries as Yen Hsi-Shan seizes the Tientsin customs house within the French concession. The nationalist government had earlier ordered withdrawal of staff, while foreign interests fear new levies and intervention.
