Greencastle golfers traveled to Crawfordsville for a match, enjoyed the Crawfordsville club entertainment, and await a possible Sailor Sharkey Schmeling bout. Thecolumn reflects local humor and notes an upcoming Indiana Air Tour at Greencastle.
A Lake Chetak fishermen report intoxicated worms tumbling into a pan of liquor. A vigorous jerk of a fishing rod toppled a bottle, sending drink into the pan and the worms lapping it up. The worms reportedly slept off the effects over three days.
Miss Ruby Perkins, sixteen, living with her uncle Oran Perkins two miles west of Morton, was brought to Putnam County Hospital Saturday night in serious condition after an apparent suicide attempt. She showed marked improvement the next day and was expected to recover barring complications. Relatives could not provide a motive.
Greencastle Independent nine defeated Cloverdale 16 to 4 at Morrison Park Cloverdale Sunday afternoon. Harlan pitched effectively for Greencastle while Sackett started for Cloverdale. Next Sunday Cloverdale faces Elletsville in a rematch with Greencastle idle.
Miss Rachel L. Pickett, 77, longtime Reelsville resident, died Sunday afternoon at 5 50 after a six week illness. Funeral services are set for Tuesday at 2 pm with burial in Boone Cemetery. Surviving relatives include brothers Paul Pickett Tillman Pickett and Willard Pickett and sisters Mrs Mette McElroy and Latelda Pickett and Mrs Caroline Luft.
County Agent Floyd Miller issues a call for a Putnam County Fair Board meeting on Tuesday evening at 8 o'clock in his office at the courthouse. All interested in the County Fair project urged to attend.
Mr and Mrs C G Chris Hartman of 643 Walnut street were injured Saturday night when their car veered off the road near the Mary Ann Coffee Shop west of Brazil. Hartman was thrown through the windshield sustaining head injuries and dental damage while Mrs Hartman suffered minor cuts. They received treatment at home from Dr W R Hutcheson. The vehicle suffered substantial damage.
Twenty years ago in Greencastle Alec Lane began surveying the public square to prepare a paving and sidewalk estimate. Mr and Mrs Thomas Bahanan of Floyd township welcomed twin boys. Fred Goodwine and Laurence Graham traveled to Indianapolis to view the airplane race.
Two persons, Mrs. Hudlin and Mrs. Stone, were hurt when a car owned by L W Hudlin from 106 East Poplar Street veered off a pavement near Greencastle. The crash occurred about 11 30 Sunday morning on East Washington Street road.
Walton Indiana letter from Mr and Mrs Emmett Nelson and son asks how and when balloons were sent for the air tour. They report a toy balloon landed in their cornfield six days earlier at 5 00 p m ten miles south of Logansport. The note is addressed to the Indiana Air Tour Greencastle Indiana and signed June 14 180.
The Indiana open season for game fish began today per Waster Shirts chief of the fish and game division. It remains illegal to catch game fish since April 30. Species include bass, bluegill, rock bass, yellow perch, walleyed pike, pickerels, crappie and sunfish. License rules apply to out of county fishing. in-county fishing requires no license.
Winifred Murnane, a Greencastle High School graduate, wins a month of study and training in social work in Cleveland under the Associated Charities program. She was chosen from twelve Midwestern universities for leadership and scholarship and will have all expenses paid.
Boston university awarded twelve honorary degrees at its seventh annual commencement in the Boston Arena. Garfield Bromley Oxnam of Green Castle Indiana, a BU alumnus and president of DePauw University, received the doctor of letters degree amid praise for his work as educator and social prophet.
Partly cloudy and slightly cooler tonight in the extreme north portion. Tuesday forecast shows continued cooler temperatures with diminished sunshine.
Seven persons were injured when two Terre Haute Indianapolis and Eastern interurban cars collided head on just east of the Fillmore interurban station. Among the injured were Jesse McAnally and Mrs. Charles Crawley of Greencastle. Dr. AL RL Ayler attended Mrs. Crawley who had a badly wrenched back and two broken ribs. Other injured included motorman John Bohanan and R. F. Hinkle. Two Greencastle doctors and Dr. Fuson of Coatesville cared for the wounded.
