Charles J. Arnold comments on boxing politics and ticket prices after Schmeling wins the heavyweight title. He riffs on heat, milk for children, Ott Webb in St. Louis, the Indiana Air Tour, the Billion Dollar tariff, and the dry and wet debate as a moral issue.
The air tour chairmen and others interested in the tour arrangements will meet Monday at noon at the Leve Inn. Final plans will be discussed at this time.
Flags waved in Greencastle today in observance of Flag Day. A flag was displayed in front of nearly every business in town.
The forecast calls for mostly fair conditions tonight and Sunday with a chance of showers and cooler temperatures in the extreme northwest portion.
The 42nd Annual Convention of Christian Endeavor of Indiana takes place in Indianapolis from June 19 to 22, 1930. Several hundred delegates have registered with many more expected. The program promises instruction fellowship and inspiration for young people and church workers alike.
Harold Robbins of Greencastle was chosen treasurer of DePauw University by the board of trustees, succeeding Dr. Salem B Town. Robbins, 29, will also supervise central purchasing and advise on supplies to save money. He has seven years in the university treasurer’s office and four years at Central National Bank.
Deputy Sheriff Alva Bryan and Chief Otto Dobbs report a North Salem man Leon Farrow and his companion held for investigation in Indianapolis. Farrow, son of Otto Farrow and Agnes Deevers, resides in north Floyd township and is suspected of prior trouble including a bad check in Danville. Stolen license plates were found on their car north of Greencastle, and Farrow allegedly admitted giving a bad check to King Morrison and Foster of Greencastle and Cloverdale.
Former Greencastle woman Mrs Catherine Allison Christie now living in Miami launches original pupil composed music project at Cushman school. Fifth and sixth graders co compose a three part song with class responsibility highlighting creative education and child centered learning.
The 1980 wool clip from Putnam County Wool Growers association, sold to Levingstein Bros. of Shelbyville at 26.5 cents a pound, will be delivered Wednesday morning at the warehouse on north Jackson street.
Cloverdale's independent baseball team, the strong Cloverdale Greys, are favored to beat the Greencastle Specials in a Sunday game at Morrison Park near Cloverdale. The Specials aim to stop Cloverdale's hot bats after recent big wins against Riverside Grays and Beech Grove Reds.
John R. Brown a Frank Allen filling station employee faced a child neglect charge in Putnam circuit court before Judge James P. Hughes. The case was halted by a technical affidavit error after Mrs. Benjamin Toole of Carpentersville signed the affidavit. Toole later sought to withdraw it amid claims Brown pressured her and other witnesses testified.
Twenty years ago in Greencastle a flag day event included unveiling a court house tablet honoring Revolutionary War soldiers. Mr and Mrs J P Allen traveled to Washington DC to meet President Taft after Senator Ralph Moss arranged the introduction.
In Chicago the police wage a sweeping drive arresting hoodlums and vagrants after the slaying of Tribune reporter Alfred J. Lingle. About 1,200 detained with 324 still held as public anger over gang rule grows. Church federation plans a mass meeting to oppose gang domination and Alderman Arthur Albert pushes a full police department probe. Police promise to close Chicago’s 6,000 speakeasies. The Lingle case proceeds in secret as investigators report no progress disclosed.
Dr Isaac B Austin of Noblesville named state commander while W A Kilmartin of Princeton becomes senior vice commander and Joseph D B Henninger of Rensselaer is appointed adjutant The Indiana department delegates propose allowing Women’s Relief Corps to conduct burials and tribute services due to aging depleted membership Newcastle chosen as next year’s meeting site.
The Citizens Trust Company of Greencastle files in Putnam Circuit Court seeking $3,000 against Roy H. Dobell and Elizabeth P. Dobell both now in Indiana. Plaintiffs allege ownership of lots in Greencastle eastern enlargement and a July 1927 note for $2,000 secured by a mortgage. Suit seeks foreclosure with $2,000 principal plus interest due to May 15.
Murray Townsend of Greencastle, employed at the Franklin Street Garage, will depart Sunday for a week long vacation to Washington D C Baltimore New York and Niagara Falls by car. He will likely spend a short time in Canada and will be accompanied by Miss Edith Thompson.

About 0 15 o clock Friday night a two story brick canning factory at the Indiana state farm burned with no insurance. The fire destroyed the building and contents worth roughly 12 000 dollars while Willow ware storage near by faced possible loss of 25 000 dollars. Green Castle firemen could not reach the blaze before the factory was nearly gone. Officials cite possible causes including spontaneous combustion defective wiring or arson.
Bethel Baptist in Marion Township and Big Walnut in Washington Township report steady growth over the past year. Both churches entered a Sunday School Attendance Contest, inviting locals to visit at 10 o'clock on Sunday to observe the strong inter est and activity across departments.
Major Sir Henry Seagrave British speed king dies in Windermere accident when his giant speed boat capsized after setting a new world record. Seagrave had earlier set a car speed record at Daytona Beach in 1929. A Rolls Royce executive named Halliwell was killed in the same incident.
