Charles J. Arnold writes a satirical notice on Father’s Day timing and urban planning. He mocks the calendar choice, jokes about sidewalks around the courthouse, praises Indiana delegates from Kansas City, and jokes about Ford Lindbergh and presidential politics in a loose, opinionated column.
Mrs. Daniel Elliott learns of Lee Elliott's death from an automobile accident in Arizona. He had been in a government hospital for years due to ill health. Survived by brother Lawrence of Terre Haute and sister Nellie in California. Body to be sent to Terre Haute for burial.
Five thousand Kiwanis members from the United States and Canada head to Seattle for the 12th Kiwanis International convention opening tomorrow. Notable speakers include J O Cammack Dr Thomas Arkle Clark and Senator C C Dill. General sessions begin Monday with officer elections and the 1929 convention city chosen on Thursday.
Paving of North Indiana Street was completed Friday by A B Dorsey Construction Company. Only a small amount remains on the south section Hanna to Walnut with work shifting to finish that block. The project will give Greencastle another hard surfaced street through the city core, with College Avenue and East Washington Street likely to be surfaced this summer.
Three seas planes headed for Spitzbergen to attempt a water landing near the floe where Gen Umberto Nobile and his companions are stranded. French Commander Guilbaud Italian Major Penso and Swedish pilot Upland lead the effort, with two more planes and icebreakers Krassin and Maligin en route to assist. The drifting floe is now out of sight of land.
The boys and girls 4-H club at Merom Indiana will hold a summer camp July 23 to 27. County Agent R H Stevenson says many local 4-H members will attend. Cost runs about 3 dollars per member excluding transportation. The camp uses Merom College facilities with county agents vocational instructors and Purdue University representatives running the program.
Indiana starts its open season on all game fish today and runs through April next year. George N. Mannfeld, superintendent of fish and game, says streams and lakes will see large crowds tomorrow as many fishing permits have been issued.
Mildred M Evans eighteenth year? two sentences: actually 16 year old daughter of Mr and Mrs John Evans died at home 112 South Jefferson Street at 3 am Saturday after three weeks illness from heart disease. She is survived by both parents three siblings. Funeral services set for Sunday at 2 pm at Mc Curry Funeral Home with burial in Forest Hill cemetery.
The forecast calls for fair skies with warmer temperatures. Sunrise is at 4 15 AM and sunset at 7 16 PM.
Dr. Lemuel Herbert Murlin and Mrs Murlin depart Greencastle for the East to sail for Europe. Dr Murlin, retired as DePauw University president, will resume ministry and fill the pulpit of the American Church in Berlin, Germany, delivering his first sermon there July 1.
Simon Jones of New Maysville arrested Friday after deputies found about seven gallons of illicit liquor on his property half a mile south of town. He pled not guilty in Putnam Circuit Court with bonds set at $600 per charge. trial scheduled for Monday, June 25.

News from Washington reports a sharp attack by Senator Norris on the Hoover Curtis Borah Republican arrangement. Norris accuses the administration of failings and fuels talk of a third party as McNary voices support for farm relief while praising Hoover and pledging farm parity with industry.
Kansas City June 16 Republicans leave town upbeat as Senator Charles Curtis of Kansas is nominated for Vice President. Party leaders say Curtis long labeled Farmers Friend will soothe farm relief factions and blunt Lowden’s charge that the platform fails grain belt needs. Curtis backed McNary Haugen but said veto votes reflect duty as Senate leader.
Linton Indiana June 16 Four small trunks two wild cherry and two elm used as uprights in a manger built by John Combs near here last fall have blossomed and are in full leaf. The trunks were sawed from roots and not buried yet served all winter with bark worn away. Combs says he will eat cherries from his manger this season.
A large Masonic reception honored Ralph Howard superintendent of the Indiana state Farm and newly elected Grand Warden. Attendees included Knights Templar from Indiana and visitors from Terre Haute Brazil and Lafayette commanderies. The program featured musical selections, speeches, and a cup presentation, with remarks by Howard and others.
Floods after two levee breaches along the St Francis and White Rivers threaten southeast Missouri and northeast Arkansas. About 1,000 families homeless in Kennett Missouri and Newport Arkansas. Red Cross on scene. relief camps planned. 150 families need immediate aid. Authorities report multiple villages evacuated and Guard units aiding in the response.
