Putnam County Bankers Association Vigilantes rifle team scored 474 of 525 at the state shooting meet held Monday at Fort Benjamin Harrison Indianapolis under State Bankers Association auspices. McLean led the team with 181 of 210 in pistol, and the squad totaled 486 of 630.
An merger between VanCamp Packing Co of Indianapolis and Jewel Tea Co of Barrington Illinois is being negotiated with assets around 2 million dollars. Jewel Tea likely will take $2.5 million in preferred stock and an official announcement is expected in a few days.
In Terre Haute Indiana June 10 District Attorney George Jeffrey opened the United States District Court trial of forty one men in a Wabash Valley liquor conspiracy case. Several defendants pleaded guilty or not guilty and opening statements followed as Judge Baltzell requested counsel for several unrepresented defendants. Jack Onkin who owns a Greencastle jewelry store is described as a defendant whose alleged connections were dismissed after examination.
Two cars sustained minor damage in a 12:30 p m collision at the DePauw and Broadway corner in Greencastle South. Drivers John Hamilton of Fox Ridge and Sherman Early of Greencastle storekeeper were not injured. Police Chief Otto Dobbs investigated. no arrests were made.
An all day gathering of 4 H club leaders and junior leaders from Putnam County was conducted at the high school vocational building. Miss Sol Berg of Purdue University extension division and County Agent Floyd Miller led the session.
The Patton residence at 1019 South Crown Street was wiped out by a morning fire of undetermined origin. Neighbors, with four young children inside, evacuated the family as the Greencastle fire department and volunteers fought the blaze for about two hours. The building, owned by Milt Brown, suffered heavy damage. furnishings were ruined largely by water. No insurance covered the contents. Pattons were away at work when the incident began.
The Girl Reserves suspend regular club work for summer and run a story hour program at ten each Wednesday starting June 11. Ruth Ellington Edna Mae Albin Margaret Anne Matkin Miriam Bintz Agnes Baughman and Letty York lead the first sessions with Mrs. Thomas and university instructor Ms Bell assisting. all grade school children invited.
The outlook calls for generally fair conditions tonight and Wednesday with little change in temperature. No significant precipitation expected and skies should remain mostly clear.
Yesterday was the last day for registration in DePauw University's summer school. Recitations and lectures begin this morning with Prof. H. B. Greenleaf as director. Enrollment is not yet complete but expected to rise over last year.
Mabel Shields Talbott of Putnamville filed for divorce in Putnam Circuit Court this afternoon alleging desertion since May 24 and cruel and inhuman treatment. She notes they married in September 1924 and that Talbott faces a recent criminal charge and is out on bond. She alleges intoxication, failure to provide, and instances of domestic violence.
Greencastle country club members will travel to Crawfordsville for a Sunday golf tournament at the Crawfordsville Country Club. Drawings for the tourney will be held after players gather. Several members plan to attend. the event will be an all day affair with dinner served at the Crawfordsville club.
Funeral services with the Eastern Star lodge were held at McCurry Funeral Home at 1 a.m. for Mrs. Delle Wilson Buis wife of Dr. Lemuel Buis who died at her Linton home on Saturday. Interment followed in Forest Hill cemetery. The Buiss resided here until about ten years ago and she was a DePauw University graduate.
Jacob FE. McCurry and Luella Ray Russey of Princeton were married last evening. The bride has studied at DePauw for two years.
Paul V. McNutt in Indianapolis denounced the Hoover Coolidge and Harding regimes, attacking tariff plans and secrecy on the naval disarmament pact. He warned of four million unemployed, bank and business failures, farm price declines, and retaliation by foreign nations, calling for accountability from the GOP.
Harry W. Moore of the city elected vice president for the Fifth District at the Democratic State Convention in Indianapolis. Each of the thirteen districts selected one convention vice president to represent their district.
William Edward Lewin 34 an Indianapolis engineer and Sallie Blanche Frye 26 of Putnam County marry at home after obtaining a marriage license.
Green castle men attend the twenty first annual meeting of Group Five of the Indiana Bankers association at Lafayette Country club. Over three hundred bankers expected with J H Riddell of the Riddle Bank of Brazil presiding and Elmer W Stout of Fletcher National Bank Indianapolis as principal speaker.
Democratic State chairman R F E Peters pledged party victory in the fall urging unity against corrupt influences. He cited burdens of high taxes unemployment and poverty and warned against alliances with privileged power while appealing to 600000 followers of Thomas Jefferson.
Indiana Democrats unveil a sweeping platform calling for a state income tax, old age pensions, abolition of public official fee systems, reform of election registration, condemnation of yellow dog labor contracts, and tighter limits on injunctions. The document also praises world peace efforts and endorses labor rights while dodging the wet dry issue amid a packed convention at Cable Tabernacle.
