Charles J. Arnold reflects on DePauw University graduates facing a vast world. He notes Greencastle's airport preparations for an Air Tour reception and teases local political hopefuls including Art Hamrick and tentative candidates for secretary of state and supreme court reporting.
Carroll Bottom of Purdue University Farm Management arrives in Putnam County with County Agent Floyd Miller to inspect farm record books. About sixty farmers are keeping accounts of expenditures and profits as Bottom plans several days of visits. Miss Dorothy Hack and Miss Regina Herron of Crawfordsville will attend the Alpha Phi alumni banquet at DePauw University in Greencastle on Saturday night.
The Chicago area bishop delivered the commencement address for 604 DePauw graduates. He urged merging the self with the cooperative We across marriage education friendship business life and religion. Degrees were conferred including five LLDs and four Doctors of Divinity on notable judges and clergy.
Four Methodist ministers received Doctor of Divinity degrees at DePauw University during commencement exercises. Recipients include Rev W D Fairchild secretary of the Chicago area Methodist Episcopal church Rev Guy C Carpenter pastor of First Methodist Crawfordsville Ind Rev Manfred Wright pastor of First Methodist Kendallville Ind and Rev Charles W Whitman pastor of First Methodist Vincennes Ind The first three are DePauw graduates while the fourth was a student in 1887 Degrees awarded cited graduation years of 1900 1904 and 1912 respectively.
Dr G Bromley Oxnam president of DePauw University delivers the baccalaureate sermon for the 504 seniors. He urges the danger of vanishing ideals and stresses the value of scholarly and constructive citizenship. He cites research discipline and service to country as paths to lasting visions.
On Wednesday at 4 PM seven hundred toy balloons will rise from the courthouse lawn as the All-Indiana Air Tour begins. The same display continues Thursday through Monday with each balloon bearing a date tag and redeemable tickets for gifts or a ride in a Tri-Metered plane. Dobbs Tire & Battery Co. was left off an earlier sponsor list.
Levinstein Brothers of Shelbyville won the wool sale bidding for the Putnam County Wool Pool. They offered 26e for merchantable wool and 2le for second grade wool, one cent above the next highest bid. Five bids were placed. wool received in Greencastle on Wednesday June 18. Any Putnam County wool grower may sell through the pool.
The Putnam County Bankers Association sent Vigilantees teams to Indianapolis to compete in both the rule and pistol matches at Fort Benjamin Harrison under the State Bankers Association. Rifle team members are Marion Crawley, Lloyd Houck, and Lester Sudwanski, while Russellville's Tom Welch, Don L. McLean, and Neal Everman form the pistol squad. Russell Brown, president of the First National Bank, accompanied the shooters. Dr. Gerald Wilhite of Lafayette is visiting, with W. Tribby and family at commencement exercises.
DePauw University in Greencastle will receive a $100,000 gift from the Rockefeller Foundation aimed at a fund raising effort that seeks to raise four times that amount. The campaign plan is being arranged by President Francis McConnell Dr Salem Town and board of trustees president Mr Doroughty.
An Olde Tink Fiddlers Contest over the management of OC Lough Waveland will be held at the Odd Fellows Hall Russellville Thursday evening June 12 for the benefit of the Russellville Odd Fellows lodge. The largest crowd of Old Time Fiddlers and Musicians is expected with specialties between each fiddling set. Prizes are donated by Russellville business men.
Albert Burks of Michigan and George Thompson of Houston were released from Putian county jail after authorities failed to link them to a purse theft. The incident occurred Friday morning near the Bigg Pour station where a passerby left on a Four train. The purse contained $25 in cash and an $850 check to a New York resident visiting her aunt in town.
Carl Smith of near Bainbridge sustained injuries when a wagon carrying him and his son Charles was struck from behind by an eastbound car driven by Priest on State Road 6 west of Bainbridge. Priest and Charles Smith suffered minor injuries. Carl was taken to a Bainbridge physician and treated for non serious injuries. Priest agreed to compensate the wagon owners. Witnesses reported Priest’s headlights were out at impact.
Mt. Piscah will host its annual Home Coming on Sunday June 15 with a basket dinner and an afternoon program. Rev Todd of Rieselsville Federated Church will preach in the morning and Rev Cotten of Bellmore will speak in the afternoon.
The forecast calls for generally fair conditions tonight with little change in temperatures for Tuesday. No precipitation expected and overnight lows remain mild. Winds light, skies mostly clear into the day.
Chicago police report a racketeer slain in a fresh flare of gang violence. Aloysius Kearney, a reputed gangster and organizer, was shot six times and died on a sidewalk. Frank Thompson, once accused of selling machine guns used in the St Valentine’s Day massacre, was wounded and transported to a Rockford hospital after collapsing at the wheel. Police tie Kearney’s shooting to the death of rival gangster Eugene Melanchlin, found earlier in a drainage canal.
Idelle Wilson Buis, 71, former Greencastle resident and DePauw alumna, died Saturday in Linton after a two day illness. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at Ivellock in McCurry Funeral Home with the Eastern Star directing. Interment in Forest Hill Cemetery. She is survived by husband Dr. Lemuel Buie and two stepsons Dr. C. O. Buis of Paris, Texas, and Dr. L. Buis of Terre Haute. She belonged to the Christian church and Eastern Star. Short services will be in Welch Chapel in Linton tonight.
The Cloverdale Greys defeated the Kingan’s nine of Indianapolis by a score of 5 to 0 at Morrison Park Sunday. The Kingan’s battery was Eddleman Young and Frobes, and the Greys’ battery was Sacket and William. Next Sunday the Greencastle Specials will oppose the Greys at Morrison Park.
