Charles J. Arnold describes a moonlit Indianapolis baseball game heard on radio with a humorous tone. He riffs on night sports, betting, a local political bid by Arthur J. Hamrick, a new soft drink stand, and a stray line about airplanes and summer school for east end boys.
An explosion at a saw mill on Edgar Casebeer’s farm near Jordan Village blasts the building roof and tractor steam engine power unit. Bert Rubeck, Arthur Anderson, Robert Langdon and his son Clifford Langdon, Mae Rubeck, and Meryl Kay were present with six men escaping serious injury. The blast is attributed to low boiler water causing an explosion.
The American Legion and Auxiliary Fifth district meet in Beechwood Park Rockville on Sunday June 15 starting at 2 PM. Host post is Fellenzer post 48 with an afternoon program including music by Terre Haute String Ticklers Clinton drum corps and a basket dinner at 6 PM after a 5 PM parade.
Frank Mayr Jr. of South Bend won the Democratic nomination for secretary of state at Indiana’s state convention on the fifth ballot after a three hour battle among six candidates. Simmons supporters shifted to Mayr to defeat Arthur J. Hamrick as old party feuds flared on the floor.
Charles Crawley rural mail carrier from Bloomington road south of Greencastle suffered burns to hands face and one eye while trying to extinguish a blaze that damaged the pantry and kitchen of his home Tuesday evening at 6 15. A Greencastle physician treated his injuries and he inhaled smoke but the eye injury is not expected to be serious. The fire started from an electric iron left on. Greencastle fire department arrived about 6 30 and extinguished the fire damaging pantry furniture and kitchen.
Greencastle city council votes to install three new fire plugs at Jacob street Hillsdate avenue and Indianapolis road at $75 yearly each and to move one plug 520 feet south. A man will be hired for 30 days at $1 a day to supervise dumping at Pitmans pond amid weed-clearing concerns on vacant lots.
Democratic slate announces state level candidates including Walter Treanor for Supreme Court First District Curtis Bell for Supreme Court Fourth District Posey Kime and William Bridwell for appellate seats Alphonse Wood Harvey Curtis for Second District George Cole for Superintendent Frank Mayr Jr for Secretary of State Floyd Williamson for Auditor William Storen for Treasurer and Fred Pickett for Clerk of Supreme and Appellate Courts all listed with city of residence
County 4-H club leaders and junior leaders met in Greencastle High School to finalize plans for the annual Putnam county 4-H picnic set for July 16. Floyd Miller and Miss Solberg of Purdue outlined club participation and leadership projects, with demonstrations highlighted as a key activity.
The Green Castle High School summer session began Tuesday with strong enrollment. Superintendent Warren J. Yount oversees classes with William Bishop aided by twenty student teachers from DePauw University.
Twenty years ago in Greencastle the Putnam County Farmers Institute president George B. Knauer met in Terre Haute with district leaders to plan a short course. Henry Stone of San Pedro California visits his brother Ed Stume, a former local worker. James Paxton Voorhees novel The Caverns of Dawn hits Langden's Bookstore. A Vandalia Railroad monster engine makes its first local run.
Three Madison township youths Noah Hunter 18 Donald Marshall 15 and Charles Shields 14 pled guilty to malictone trespass on the Moore farm. Judge James F. Hughes fined each 18 dollars and costs amid neighbors and Moore testifying to crop damage and destruction of a cultivator.
The Grand Army of the Republic and allied groups opened their state encampment in Wabash with preliminary meetings. A business session, parade, and campfire were planned, and officers plus next year’s site were to be chosen. Marion invited 1981’s gathering. Memorial programs, plaques, and flags accompanied ceremonies.
The Greencastle band concert opening the summer series has been postponed to Thursday June 20 due to several members being unavailable. Merchants in Greencastle fund the concerts each summer and the series will run through the season starting June 20.
Work accelerates to ready Greenaestle's new airport for the Indiana Air Tour next Tuesday. Two temporary runways are being hurried to permit landings of touring ships and the giant tri motor Ford Plane. A big crowd is expected to greet the forty ships arriving near 1 o clock and departing two hours later.
John R. Brown of the Frank Allen Filling Station north of Greencastle pleads not guilty before Judge James P. Hughes in Putnam County on a child neglect charge. Trial was set for Saturday. Brown was arrested on an affidavit by Mrs. Benjamin Toole. The children live with grandparents and cannot be kept by Brown. The grandmother sought withdrawal of the affidavit, which the judge rejected.
Professor Waldo F. Mitchell of DePauw University will address the senior and alumni chapel at the State Teachers College at Terre Haute on Thursday. He will speak on the Limits of Democracy.

In Massachusetts Bay off Scituate a collision between the Fairfax and the Pinthis in dense fog caused a fire that killed forty six, with eleven missing and twelve crew dead. The Gloucester rescued injured passengers as the Fairfax limped to port amid praise and captainship critiques.
About thirty Fillmore 4 H members attended the meeting at Fillmore High School Tuesday night. County agent Viave Miller praised it as one of the finest meetings in the county. The program featured readings music stunts and songs by the boys while the girls provided supper from well filled baskets. Miller outlined year long club plans and spoke on the annual county picnic slated for July 16.
Several families report measles cases over recent days. J D McLean and Felix Cook and a Lytle child are confined at home with the illness. Gayle Gardner also contracts measles, prompting household precautions.
