Police Chief Otto Dobbs will attend an all day State Road Police and Police Chiefs meeting in Indianapolis June 17 at the Claypool hotel. Sponsored by the Hoosier State Automobile Association, the gathering aims to harmonize traffic regulations across Indiana towns and cities amid current code variations.
Three youths were injured in a Friday afternoon two car collision on the road linking Rockville road and State road 43, about a mile from town. Garnet Harlan, daughter of Mr and Mrs Fred Harlin, sustained the most severe head wounds with ten scalp lacerations. She rode in a car driven by Arthur Swearens, a DePauw University student, which collided head on with Wilford Boswell’s car from Greencastle. Two Boswell passengers were lightly hurt. All injured were treated by Green Castle physicians. Miss Harlan was transported by George Knauer of Locust Street.
Three Madison township youths Noah Hunter 18 Donald Marshall 16 and Charles Shields 16 were freed on $200 bond after alleged trespass and damage to farmer R P Moore’s corn cultivator and farm equipment. They are to be arraigned before Judge James P Hughes Wednesday and are expected to plead guilty.
Ern est Schroeder, brother of the alleged victim, confirmed the charred body in a burned car on High School road is Herbert Schroeder of Mobile Alabama. Ernest Schroeder traveled from Evans ton Illinois to Indianapolis to aid detectives and Sheriff George Winkler in the case as authorities pursue leads in the ongoing mystery.
Greencastle residents including Miss Virginia Markham Harold Stewart Miss Helen Brothers and many others set summer travel to Europe. Plans include Mediter ranean cruise routes Aeneas guides Paris Brussels Coblenz Heidelberg Dresden Prague Vienna Budapest and visits to Oberammergau Passion Play and historic sites. Tours depart June 13 from New York and June 27 from Montreal with multiple routes and lectures.
Miss Ethel Ader home economics teacher at the local high school will attend the annual state conference for vocational home economics teachers at Lake Wawasee next week. The meeting runs from noon Monday to noon Saturday with Hotel Oaklanden as headquarters. Nationally known speakers are on the program and teachers will participate in committees to improve the state home economics program for the coming year.
First Christian Church of Greencastle joins with regional churches to mark the 19th hundredth anniversary of Pentecost. Rev. Bruner presents The Meaning of Church Membership and speaks on church identity. Pentecost Offering funds missionary and benevolent work. Children's Day program scheduled at 7:00 p.m. Public invited.
Uncle Drake Brookshire, 91, of Ladoga revisits Greencastle recalling Halley’s Comet of 1835 and warns of a poor crop season. Harry Barnes of Clinton and Miss Hertha Hillis of Limedale plan a wedding tomorrow at the Hillis home. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Ferrand of Hamrick visit Mr. and Mrs. William Shepherd.
Indianapolis dispatch reports Harold Schroeder 34 of Mobile Alabama linked to a Pittsburgh man, Ridenhour, missing after Schroeder's burning car and torso found on High School Road. Insurance investigator Thomas Riley found a forged $1000 check tied to Ridenhour who had red hair and Catholic faith.
Mrs. Ethel White 24 wife of Harry White Martinsville street Greencastle died Friday at 3 20 PM in Putnam County hospital of uremic poisoning. Entered hospital last Monday in critical condition. Funeral Sunday 2 PM Walnut Chapel Church with interment in cemetery. Surviving husband mother Mrs. John Prichard of Belle Union and four sisters six brothers.
Miss Lillian Southard received word of the death of her cousin Verner Simpson Tingley of Boise Idaho. He was born and raised in Greencastle and was about seventy. He was the son of Dr. Joseph Tingley a longtime DePauw University professor.
The weather map shows a party of clouds easing tonight in the extreme north with relatively mild temperatures. Sunday should bring fair skies and a bit warmer conditions across North and Central portions.
Eighteen patients were treated at a tuberculosis clinic held at Putnam county hospital by Dr. Stygall Indianapolis specialist Friday. The clinic was sponsored by the Putnam county tuberculosis association with Mary Agnes Miller county nurse assisting. A second clinic is planned at the hospital in July. The association also voted to discontinue summer camps and hold more frequent clinics.
William Paul Hibbs aged 41 of Marion township died at 11:45 in Putnam County hospital after stomach and ear surgery. He leaves a widow, two sisters Mrs Frank Booker and Mrs Ralph Hendrix, and brother Ross Hibbs. A World War veteran who served thirteen months overseas, he belonged to Putnam lodge No. 48 and Somerset church. Funeral at Clinton Falls church Monday at 2 PM.
Russellville June 7 Hebron cemetery association held its annual meeting on June 3 to elect officers. D L Norman was chosen president and Ed Clodfelter secretary and treasurer with directors Fletcher Goff Walter McGaughey and John P Carrington. A caretaker will be selected later.
A motorcycle rider Steve Budich of Midwest Crushed Stone Co and a one horse wagon driver Jim Cook of Commercial Place collided at East Washington and Arlington Street in a early Saturday crash. Budich drove east at about 85 mph and could not avoid the wagon driven by Cook, throwing Cook to the street and causing the wagon to wreck. Both men were injured but not seriously with Budich having a damaged motorcycle and Cook suffering a cut lip and minor injuries.
Alumni Day activities at DePauw University center on September 12 1950 for Longden Homecoming Day honoring Henry B Longden who turns 70. About 500 alumni return with reunions for classes through 1929 Asbury Hall dedication and a reception at G Bromley Oxnam's home follow a busy weekend of concerts lectures and church services.
Henry Lewis about 20 residing near Fillmore with his mother died this morning at 4 50 in Indianapolis Methodist hospital after a week of treatment. His mother Mrs Sophia Lewis passed away earlier today. Funeral arrangements are not yet complete.
