Members of the Greencastle Kiwanis Club attend a Thursday noon luncheon at the Christian church featuring Miss Louise Palmer Walker and Prof. Vernon Sheffield from DePauw School of Music. The group plans for the fifth district divisional meeting on March 19 with Lt. Governor Milt Brown aiming to host a large event including clubs from Indianapolis Franklin Columbus Bloomington and Terre Haute.
Webb delivered a gallon syrup that turned out to be water with sugar. He explained he mixed sap into the batch by error and promised to boil it down to proper syrup consistency. The matter was settled amicably in the office.
George A. Scheer and Chris N. Kassendick from the State Board of Accounts arrived in Greencastle on Tuesday to audit the Greencastle by Barrett Law fund books. They will then examine county, township, school, city and town books in the area.
Indianapolis February 26. A $200000 gift for an endowment of a philosophy chair is given to Indiana University by James B Nelson president of Fame chain of power laundries. The endowment funds real estate valued at $200000 will be held in perpetuity as the James B Nelson endowment for the teaching of philosophy.

Ensign W McMullen of Detroit Mich was killed in a spectacular aerial accident aboard the aircraft carrier during a simulated enemy attack on Lexington. He dived from 5000 feet at 250 to 300 mph, pulled out, but his plane disintegrated at 45 degrees from vertical and plunged into the sea as rescuers searched unsuccessfully.
A car wrecked into the Clark township war memorial at Washington and Main in Ladoga. The vehicle with a 1929 title to L. C. Lasley of Roachdale was found near Haven's Poultry house. no witnesses identified the driver. The monument, lit by four red lights and a 300 candle power lamp, was damaged and the car removed to a local garage for the owner.
Georgette's Famous Players and Swiss Bell Ringers presented a varied program at the high school auditorium Tuesday night. Eighteen instruments were showcased with brief explanations by Mr. Donavan. Miss Josephine Georgette displayed versatility across instruments, and the Swiss bells drew notable audience enjoyment. Mr. Donavan and his talking fiddle provided a standout attraction.
DePauw Tigers close season with seniors Charles Stankel George Mountz and Marion Crawley in last home game against Wabash College. Wabash counters with two seniors Groves and Harbison. A preliminary freshmen game precedes the main contest as fans fill the DePauw gym.
George Grubb purchases the Hamilton Hardware stock at Cloverdale. A Modern Woodmen lodge chapter opened in Fillmore with district deputy Harry Largue leading installation. Mrs Lelia W DeMotte, widow of John DeMotte, dies at Indianapolis Methodist Hospital.
Paris February 26 The French cabinet crisis grows more hopeless as both M Poincare and M Tardieu refuse Doumergue’s bids to form a new government. Poincare cites ill health and Tardieu declines, leaving the President to seek another prominent figure, with Aristide Briand widely expected next.
Chicago faces a financial scare as the Liberty Loan drive lags. With only half the cash pledged, over 40 000 county and city workers remain $12 million from pay day, while banks in Detroit and New York face-wide withdrawal bans. Minute men push pledges as Chicago and Cook County bankers urge participation.
Herman Beck, formerly in an automobile agency, has joined the Great Lakes Portland Cement Co of Buffalo and will work from Cleveland. He previously partnered with his brother Adam Beck in cement and stayed in Greencastle after Limedale mill sale. The firm builds a Cleveland plant and will ship Buffalo clinker for grinding and storage.
The City Council approved a one car garage permit for Claude Monnett at 1103 Putnamville Avenue and a $78 purchase for 21 chairs for City Hall. It tabled street lamp replacement, agreed to repair Seminary street rough spot, approved sale of three old street department trucks, and tasked the fire chief to cost two gas masks.
Chicago officials placed additional guards at city hall and federal buildings as two radical groups planned to march with banners during an unemployment demonstration. Police were alerted to the planned event and crowd control actions.
Funeral services for Mrs. Hannah Wells wife of Jesse Wells were held this afternoon at the Elm street residence with Rev B H Bruner and Dr Salem B Town in charge. Interment followed at Forest Hill Cemetery. Pall bearers included Theodore Harris George Garrett Louis Stevens Kilmer Dicks William Herod and Von Shumaker. Attending were J E Wells of Dayton Ohio daughter Edna Woods of Indianapolis and Dolly Crawley sister of the deceased of Centralia Illinois.
Will Wetz, after years in the grocery business, severed active connection with Wetz Grocery Co Inc. Lawrence Long, with the store for months, will manage the business. Wetz plans to enter the wholesale fruit and vegetable trade.
The Home Nursing Course opening tonight is postponed due to Dr. Egan’s illness and will resume Wednesday March 6. Mrs. Lee Dodge will lead the lecture and demonstration, with Dr. Evans lecture date to be announced later.
A remonstrance was filed in the county auditor's office Monday against the Roy Jones and others road in Warren and Cloverdale townships. Signed by Chester Humphreys and twenty two others, the remonstrance will be certified to the State Board of Tax Commissioners for a hearing date in this county. Opponents say the proposed bond issue is unnecessary and excessive. a petition has been pending since March 23, 1923.
Col. John Phelan of the United States Veterans Bureau will arrive to inspect proposed sites for the new Indiana Veterans' Bureau hospital. He is expected to visit Greencastle in the coming days to review sites offered by the town.
Loren Stringer of Danville dies suddenly at home after finishing a meal. He is 26, son of George and Mrs. Stringer of seven miles north of Greencastle, survived by a wife and small child. Funeral services were held today.
Ernest F. Siddons 19 of Marion township weds Thelma Stone 18 of Greencastle township at home. John Dicks 84 of Fillmore a construction worker ties with Norma Jacobs 22 of Fillmore at home.
The Eldest a one act by Edna Ferber was presented in Assembly hall Bloomington this morning by DePauw University players. Cast includes Gladys Rohring Rose Martha White Floss Robert Small Al Dwight Henry Selz Robert Orr Dorothy Rutter neighbor. It is the second exchange convocation between DePauw and Indiana with IU Men’s Glee Club to visit Greencastle next Monday March 3.
Funeral arrangements are made for Harvey Evan Strain 38 who died at home from spinal meningitis. The service will be at 1 PM Thursday at the Baptist church with Rev. William J. Crowder presiding. Interment is Forest Hill cemetery. Mrs Strain’s parents may arrive from Florida. brothers Fred Chicago Daniel Wilminton Del William Hillsdale and Miss Mary Strain Tennessee are present.
Andrew Hirt a former Greencastle resident now in Pine Bluff Arkansas where he works in timber business is in town to tend to local business interests. He expects to stay about a week.
