Miss Anne Nichols daughter of Prof and Mrs E B Nichols Greencastle is one of eighteen DePauw students to earn straight A grades for the first semester ending February 38 registrar figures show. Winston B Hole Cheboygan Mich gains highest points 57 for 19 hours of straight work. Eight residents were in fraternities or sororities six in university halls and four with private families in town.
Putnam County agricultural agent warns seed corn will be scarce this year. Tests show most crib corn is unsuitable as seed and farmers should plan accordingly.
J C Nelson of Danville was ordained Sunday at 2 p m as pastor of the Waves and Christian church in Waveland. Rev J H Wilson of Crawfordsville delivered the sermon and Evangelist Cecil Franklin conducted the ordination.
Several high schools prepare to enter the Putnam county oratorical contest on the constitution in the county court room Friday evening. County winners advance to state finals. state winners seek the national title. The event is sponsored by the Putnam County Bar Association.
Green Castle High School PTA presents Georges Famous Players of musical novelties and Swiss Bell Ringers in the auditorium at 7 30 p m. The program features multiple soloists, trios, bells, and orchestral selections led by Josephine Georgette and Donavan with a children’s matinee today.
Dr Byron H Wilson comptroller for DePauw University will address seven talks over eight days starting Sunday in Elkhart and ending the following Sunday in Hartford City. He will speak at Trinity M E Church Elkhart Goshen Leesburg Monroeville Anderson Union City Hartford City and Plainfield M E Church Family Night services in the middle of the tour.
Harvey Evan Strain aged 38 died last night about 6 after two weeks of illness near Greencastle on the Manhattan round. Doctors said the spinal fluid test showed non contagious meningitis not the epidemic form. He worked for O I Stone Co and belonged to the Baptist church. Survived by widow Rema Moore and four children, plus several siblings. Funeral planned for Thursday pending arrival of Mr and Mrs Moore from Florida.
William Julian of the Scobee farm near Bainbridge was arrested by Sheriff Edward Bitelforge on a charge of assault and battery alleged by his wife and son. The incident followed the boy’s refusal to accompany Julian on a night chicken theft. Investigators also found 48 bottles of beer nearby. Only assault and battery charges are filed at this time.
DePauw athletic director W. L. Hughes has resigned to join Columbia University. His staff presented him a wrist watch as a token of appreciation for his service.
Russellville resident Glen Sutherlin was arrested on Darlington Avenue after being stopped by Officer Sheldon for driving 55 mph. The Crawfordsville Journal Review reports the incident.
Ralph Jameison of Commercial Place was arrested by Sheriff Edward Biteljorgze on assault and battery charges filed by his wife. Prosecutor Marshall Abrams stated the arrest might clear up several thefts in Greenblate and vicinity including robberies at Wick Point Milling Station and Tinmin store on East Washington Street.
Putnam county Bee-Keepers and Horticultural Association plan a Friday meeting at the Court House. The morning focuses on horticulture and pruning soil management. the afternoon covers bees relation to horticulture with speakers Monroe McCown and H O Yost. Morning session led by Prof. R A Ogg. afternoon by R A Evans.
Senator Albert J. Beveridge sends a recommendation to President Taft to appoint Albert C. Lockridge Greencastle postmaster. Lockridge is a Republican city chairman. The Herald notes the news. The Modern Woodmen camp supper is set for March 1 with a preceding program. Pearl O H air hosted a buffet supper with about thirty guests. James A Moag and his son from Indianapolis visit C C Hurst.
Fifth Corps Area commander Major General Nolan announced ten tentative procurements for next summer’s Citizens Military Training Camps. Putnam County quota is 1 percent. active enrollment may shift quotas after April 1, sending local trainees to Fort Benjamin Harrison Indiana or Camp Knox Kentucky for one month starting June 20 and July 2.
W L Hughes head of DePauw athletics received a copy of Athletics in Education by Jesse Feiring Williams. The text from Columbia University will be used in colleges and outlines an athletic program aligned with educational aims and health benefits.
The will of Charles T. Southard formerly owner of a book store now Sam Hanna's property was probated. Miss Lillian EF Southard named executrix and all property left to her. Correna Scott's will also probated leaving all property to Vera Pauline Stone as executrix.
Charles Sigg of 505 Lincoln Avenue pled guilty in Mayor W J Denman's court to possession of intoxicating liquor. He received ninety days at the State Penal Farm and a $200 fine. Police, with a search warrant, found liquor at his home. This was his third offense, with prior penalties of thirty days and $100 fine, and sixty days and $100 fine.
The English department received four mementos from poets connected to Prof. R. A. Ogg. Items include a framed Henry W. Longfellow autograph from 1882, a Whittier letter from 1880, and two letters from Moody and Mrs. Edith Longfellow Dana dated 1909. Prof. Ogg announced the gifts during Miss Lela Walls' class acknowledging Longfellow's birthday anniversary.
Fred Clark of Roachdale is sued for 300 dollars in Putnam circuit court by Ward Young of Montgomery county. Young says Clark made fraudulent representations in leasing a Montgomery county farm and that he had to pay 275 dollars to the owner after taking over the farm. Clark already faces a 5000 dollar damage suit from George Swaim over an alleged assault.
A Chrysler coach driven west on West Walnut collided with a Ford sedan driven by Ralph Pierce. The crash injured Robert Mahoney and left Pierce and two passengers with minor injuries. Pierce cited for intoxicated driving. others cited for intoxication. All posted bonds. liquor source Charles Sigg cited. trial set March 11.
Greencastle attorney C C Gillen is being urged by Democratic leaders to run for Congress in Indiana's Fifth District to face Republican incumbent Johnson of Terre Haute. A district meeting in Terre Haute next Thursday will discuss his candidacy and likely decision.
