The High School presents a rendition of a play titled Old Louisiana Tithe at Fillmor School Auditorium Thursday at 7 o clock. The tale revolves around Pilot Parley and related figures including Ruth Bunten, Vera Jean John, Raymond Versey, Woodrow Watson, and others connected to Osborn and Miss Robinson.
Otto A Noland of Spencer candidate for secretary was in Greencastle Monday. Noland, a graduate of St university and practitioner of dental surgery, is a Presbyterian and urged school relief and better roads.
School reopened in Carpenters Ville with 15 of 50 pupils present after a week closure due to scarlet fever. County nurse Mrs. Paul Ream reports rapid recovery while some children remain home with whooping cough. Daily exams continue to avert an outbreak as Maurice Harshbarger is the only pending case. Melvin Frazier is ill with smallpox.
The annual Farmers Institute for Floyd and Marion townships will meet Friday at Fillmore high school. Speakers for morning and afternoon are Mrs. Vesta S. Perdue of Acton and J. P. Prigges of Middletown. In the evening Rev. C. H. Taylor of Greencastle will speak with music by Fillmore and Floyd Center schools.
Scott B. Martin deputy collector of internal revenue is in Greencastle Tuesday and Wednesday to assist residents filing 1929 income tax returns. He is set up in the law library of the courthouse and several have already consulted him on tax matters.
The Ellis and Company Feed Store of Greencastle sues Fred Ford of Bainbridge and Louis Jones of Hendricks County in Putnam Circuit Court for a $51 note alleged unpaid. Plaintiff seeks $90.
A Washington dispatch says Greencastle remains under consideration for the proposed Veterans Hospital. Frank T. Hines may announce the locating zone when he visits Indiana Saturday, after board talks with President Hoover. The area likely lies within 50 miles of Indianapolis.
Butler coach George Potsy Clark and DePauw coach Donovan Tubby Moffett urged constructive criticism over jeering at a Delta Upsilon state banquet in Indianapolis. They condemned circulating vicious rumors about Indiana teams and called for focus on football and positive chatter in the city and beyond.
Superintendent Warren J. Yount addressed the Pre Adolescent Study group of A A U We last evening on School Machinery. He traced Indiana education from 1800 to today, noted 1860 referendum impact, compared tax systems with New York and California, and highlighted 1923 teacher licensing law and the rise of Indiana colleges led by Vincennes College as the oldest.
The forecast calls for generally fair conditions tonight and Wednesday. Somewhat warmer in the north and west central portions tonight with continued mild temperatures on Wednesday.
Commercial Telephone Corporation of Indiana plans a complete rebuild of the Greencastle plant after a survey by an engineer. The Associated Telephone Utilities successor will reorganize calls and shift to a state new corporation with offices in Elkhart Indiana and operations in La Porte Logansport Greencastle Payette County Connersville Liberty and Steuben County. Directors include O Connell Hefty Schubring Oldegard and Humence with key officers in Elk hart Madison and Los Angeles.
Green Castle faced a setback as Art Gross star center and back guard was taken to Putnam County hospital with a suspected incipient pneumonia. Coach Uusman rushed him yesterday afternoon after a loss of strength. Doctors found walk on one lung but hope to check the case. He may not play this weekend and only extreme care could allow him for tournaments.
Sealed questions for the Putnam county high school Latin contest will be received by county superintendent John Vermillion. The event at Greencastle High School in Green castle on Saturday morning February 22 invites all Putnam county schools and feeds into the state contest by Indiana University extension.
Bac D. B. Hostetter received twenty pairs of Hungarian partridges from the State Fish and Game Commissioner for release as weather permits. A blaze yesterday destroyed Henry Dorsett’s home south of Belle Union. The Knights of Pythias lodge opened with a program to a large crowd. membership reaches 130. Senator Beveridge has not named a candidate for the local postmaster job.
Greencastle Rotarians plan a West Baden Rotary Conference with attendees including Mr. and Mrs. Neely O'Hair and others. Dr. G Bromley Oxnam, University president, will address the Thursday program afternoon.
The Putnam County Credit Association elected a larger board and held its first meeting to map the year’s work. A committee proposed monthly statements to all customers and listing slow accounts to improve collections and assist orderly payments.
Mrs. Elizabeth Riggle, 89, longtime Putnam County pioneer of Ronehdale, died Monday night at home of her daughter southeast of Ladoga. Born November 4, 1841, she was married to Spencer Riggle, who preceded her. Surviving are nine children, 22 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, 8 great great grandchildren, a brother William Stewart, and sister Mrs. John Jeffries. Funeral Wednesday at 1 pm at Mrs. Shackleford’s home with burial in Ladoga cemetery. She was a member of the Ronchdale Baptist church.
Extracts from the Moan-On Revue musical comedy by DePauw students were presented at a Greencastle High School assembly this morning. The audience applauded the performance and the show was well received.
Robert Rissler 17 star on the Keelaville basketball team was hit while crossing Pleasant Garden's National Road at 6 p.m. He jumped onto a Chevrolet Sedan from the east before sliding onto the radiator. He suffered head injuries and was taken home by his father. Police investigate possible driver from Lone Star Cement Plant area.
Indications point to large crowds for the Corporal Eagen home talent show under American Legion auspices. Advanced-ticket sales began this morning at Stevens drug store with patrons waiting at 7 o clock for opening.
The Rotary Club meets Wednesday at 12 15 pm with Orville Stewart presenting Water Service. The district conference follows Wednesday and Thursday at West Baden with Greencastle representation and about ten others attending. DePauw president G Bromley Oxnam speaks Thursday on international service and Charles McGaughey oversees the banquet.
