Death of an Indianapolis youth, a Rainbow Regiment member likely from an accidental shooting, reported from Washington. The incident dims expectations of local boys enlisting or participating in the line of battle.
Reported dispatches claiming DePauw University and Greencastle students in the Rainbow division are in France were labeled false by War Department officials. Sergt Kent S. Ritchie died in France from a gunshot wound, likely accidental during target practice, while serving with Battery D Fort Wayne. Rainbow Regiment Cheer Association plans Easter greetings for overseas soldiers with a poem by William Herschell and candy boxes from Indianapolis News.
Mrs. Gertrude Boswell Eubanks, long time Clinton Falls operator, was presented Thursday with a fine rocking chair and silver dessert spoons by Clinton Falls-Greencastle telephone company members. J. M. Hamrick, company president, made the purchases as she recently resigned from the Clinton Falls post.
Summer plans are announced for Friday evening at Meharry Hall at 7 30 p m. The event promises an entertaining program in a local community venue.
Warren Jones a missionary evangelist of the Pentecostal Church of the Nazarene will lecture tonight at the Nazarene church corner of Washington Vine streets at 7 00 o clock. He speaks on missions work in Central and South America and the Philippines after returning from Central America where he held revivals. The public is invited and he will be in Greencastle for one night only.
Vernon Castle is killed while flying at Benbrook Texas. A DAR war benefit is planned with a February 22 event at the K of P hall featuring dancing and games.
The county examining board added sixteen men to the list of those physically qualified for general military service in future draft increments. New roster entries include William Clay Dixon, Glenn H. Cook, Robert A. Hoffman, Artie M. Scobee, Ellis L. Mundy, Robert E. Allen, James F. Strain, Claude Ellis, Burton A. McGlachlin, James R. Boyd, Herbert A. Darnell, Glen C. Skelton, Lloyd B. Scribner, Oren O. Bondeman, Walter L. Owens, and Lex Masters.
Seven Indiana colleges will send representatives to the state oratorical contest at the Central Christian church in Indianapolis on February 22 under the State Oratorical Association. Schools: Earlham Wabash Butler Hanover DePauw Franklin and Notre Dame. Franklins Flora Mabey Hayes is the only girl speaker. Earlham’s representative is yet unnamed.
E B Taylor of A C Stone Co., city, named one of two Indiana directors for the National Crushed Stone Association formed in Chicago. E T Milligan of Muncie is the other Indiana director. Directors to meet in Baltimore at month end to finalize the organization. Thirteen states represented at the Chicago meeting.
Able addresses marked the Institute annual session held at Green Castle Court House on Friday morning and afternoon.
The Greencastle farmers institute met in the court house with half the assembly room filled. Officers elected were President Grafton Longden Vice-president George Hanna Secretary Treasurer I H Strain. Speakers Mr Anderson Mrs Hazelett and Mrs Lindley addressed soil preparation seed corn culture and patriotic farm work.
The Third District appraisal board at Indianapolis has placed Lewis W. Stone of Greencastle in class No. 1 division 1 for military draft.
Attend the D. A. R. war benefit in the K of P hall Friday February 22 at 8 p m. Admission 50 cents. Dancing and games.
The Greencastle high basketball squad travels to Russellville tonight led by Coach Harry Royse with players Allen, Carl Allen, Handy, O Neal, Black, Newgent, Harris and Purdy. Friday, Browning Hall hosts Amo in a hoped for strong Hendricks county showdown. Teachers appoint class supervisors for a four class carnival with minstrel shows and a senior boys crazy house stunt.
The Maroon reports 157 subscriptions collected for the Annual and staff aim for at least 200 soon. Readers may pay additional amounts to Paul VanArsdel, the newspaper’s business manager, to support the book.
Miss Mable Hurst daughter of Mr and Mrs Dr Hurst residing in Putnamville visited the high school this morning. She attended G H S during her freshman and sophomore years.
The sale of war savings stamps has passed the 50 million dollar mark, with daily receipts ranging from 1.5 to 2.5 million dollars. The figures show strong public participation after subscriptions to Liberty Loans and Red Cross efforts, with savings growing at a rate unseen before the war. A million dollars a day is cited as the highest growth rate for the savings bank.
Cecil McAninch son of Harvey Mc Aninch and Miss Elizabeth Wilcox daughter of Everett Wilcox were married Saturday at the Methodist parsonage by Rev. W J Stewart. They worked in Indianapolis where they met and will reside there as McAninch serves as a link belt factory inspector.
A representative states the flood issue must await on the House floor, with no Indiana involvement in moving deferred contingents on February 23. The note signals delayed action and movement timing for the draft call referred to in political proceedings.
Washington reports the second draft likely not before May or June per Rep Flood and War Department briefing. Indiana telegram from Provost Marshal Crowder says February 23 movement does not apply to Indiana and no order to discontinue physical exams has been received by Major Baltzell.
Purdue University official L S Robertson says about 25 000 Indiana farmers will be required to file under the new federal income tax law by April 1 1918. All farm income must be reported including living costs and barter values. those with no books must begin keeping accounts immediately. Purdue has supplied free accounting books to help farmers comply.
At the Hendricks county board meeting James P. Snodgrass of Danville was elected superintendent of the county schools, succeeding Theodore T. Martin who resigned to join the Delaware Danville Gazette.
County Recorder Sylvanus Vermilion suffered serious facial burns when a gas furnace explosion occurred at his home as he added coal to the fire. Flames burst from the furnace door, injuring his face a few days ago.
Indianapolis report states men outside Class 1 may register for the United States shipbuilding army. Indiana aims to provide 10,847 names ready for duty when called. Public Service Reserve director N E Squibb and Hays Buskisk urge registration as war work reliance grows.
Tonight at Meharry Hall the high school chorus of sixty voices conducts two cantatas Summer and Wreck of the Hesperus under Miss Allison. Soloists include Dean McCutchan Pratt Gladys Jolley Edna Ellis and more. Proceeds fund equipment for the new high school building.
Locust street church hosts a union patriotic service Sunday evening with the state militia expected in full force and seats reserved for Greencastle Post No. 11 G A R Civil War veterans Spanish American War veterans and Women's Relief Corps. All men of military age in Putnam county are invited. Rev Raphael will preach The Nations Bulwark Men with a patriotic song service led by Harry Maxwell and special numbers.
Members of 29th Separated Company I S M are ordered to assemble at the armory Sunday evening February 17 1918 at 6 30 p m sharp to attend patriotic services at Locust Street Church by order Darnall Denman first sergeant and Will H Graham captain.
Depauw defeats Wabash 19 to 16 in a hard contest as Methodist wins second straight at Crawfordsville leading 12 to 11 after one period.
In Crawfordsville Indiana on February 15 DePauw University defeats Wabash 19 to 16 in a see-saw basketball game. McClure and Manson sparked scoring as Wabash led early the new gymnasium debut marked the first game there.
Willis D. Wright a Fillmore hardware merchant turned farmer announces candidacy for Marion township trustee subject to Democratic primary. He cites ten years of Fillmore business experience and long Democratic involvement as qualifications and notes strong local support.
A union patriotic service at Locust Street Church invites all Putnam County young men of army age to attend. The Ministerial Association and local congregations extend a sincere invitation to the county’s youth, honoring those already sent to camps or the front.
A. V. O'Daniel reports telegrams from N. E. Squibbs urging rapid enrollment of shipbuilding craftsmen. Indiana's apportionment is 10,000 with only 1,600 enrolled so far. Local coordinators are asked to keep enrollment places open Saturday afternoon and night.
