Former Greencastle man Samuel Gibson is killed in Terre Haute when his neck is broken as he tries to start an elevator from the floor of a department store. Police report the accident occurred at the store building during work.
Samuel Gibson aged 42, a former Greencastle man and brother of Ott Gibson, died when an elevator shaft incident at the Root Store in Terre Haute crushed his neck. He leaned into the moving elevator from outside, the car descended, and the neck was broken. He left behind a wife and three children, with his family and relatives arranging funeral plans in Greencastle as Miss Geraldine Gibson and Dr. Claude Hamilton traveled from Montana. James L. Hamilton and Ott Gibson accompanied the body to Greencastle after the accident at the store.
George Shockley, once of Greencastle, now in Indianapolis, again clashes with police after his Starr and Shockley cigar store at 144 East Ohio Street is linked to a basement gambling room. Eugene Eldridge, dressed as a garage worker, entered the game to observe, triggering a raid by Sergeant Thomas and motor cops who arrested four players. Francis A. Starr, owner from 430 North Meridian, is involved as a part owner.
George Brown 417 West Seventeenth Street Al Brown 1128 North West Street and George Young of Terre Haute faced charges in city court with keeping a gambling house and gambling. They offered to plead guilty to gambling if the keeping a gambling house count was dismissed, but Judge Walter Pritchard continued the case to February 19. Police had surveilled the basement game for weeks and planned a ruse to enter the room before a raid due to multiple exits.

Seats are set for parents from the university and Putnam county.

An American soldier, Daniel P. Freeman of Greencastle, writes from France dated January 8, 1918, to his friend Charles Arnold. He recalls letters and packages lifting morale, rough weather, ongoing training, and front line service in No Man's Land with the 28th Infantry AEF. He mentions visiting comrades Snider Hays Leachman and hopes to return home soon. He asks greeting to Mr. and Mrs. Arnold and notes thoughts of Greencastle friends back home.
Greencastle Crescent Rebekah Lodge No. 763 will hold a regular meeting Monday February 18 at 8 p m. Members are urged to attend.
The program lists parts of a choral recitation and solos including The Storm and The Day Is Dying, performed by Miss Hand Miss Love and others with a sixty-voice chorus. Soloists include Edna Ellis Jolley Pratt McCutchan and accompanist Lois Brown. The event features works by Longfellow and chorus pieces titled It Is Sweet When High In Heaven and The Glories of Day Are Declining.

The State Board of Education allows this for high school sons whose fathers need labor on grain and vegetable planting. Applications are being distributed to pupils and include conditions on work hours, weather exceptions, examinations, and reporting requirements.
In Greencastle Friday night the G H S squad fell 32 to 16 to Russellville after a fast start. Green Castle led 8 to 7 early but trailed 14 to 8 at halftime and could only muster 16 in the second half while Russellville reached 32. Thad Peck granted a divorce to Mrs Forest Hughes Friday afternoon with custody of their two sons awarded to Mr Hughes.
