Sheriff Edward Eiteljorge delivers Burley Joy, 28, from Terre Haute to the Indiana State Reformatory at Pendleton for a 1 to 5 year sentence after pleading guilty to escape from Putnamville. Joy, an alleged escapee from Putnamville, was recaptured and arraigned in Terre Haute before Judge James P. Hughes.
Faye and Hamilton, Greencastle attorney move from the Heath building to the Granada Theatre building. Weather outlook shows mostly cloudy with possible snow flurries in the north portion Tuesday and mostly fair by Wednesday with little temperature change.
The Russellville Independent basketball team hosts the Attica semi-pro squad at Russellville High School gym Saturday night to raise funds for the needy of Russellville and vicinity. Attica earlier lost a close away game to Russellville, whose roster includes former Russellville High School players and several who played with North Putnam in the state finals.
North Salem merchants report a ring of forged checks causing losses to local businesses. A suspect used the name Claude Robbins, presenting $12.50 and $12.80 purchases at multiple stores but claimed he would return for goods. State police detained a man in Brownsburg, but merchants say he is not the offender. Similar incidents traced to Barnard, Ladoga, Lebanon, Crawfordsville and other towns in Hendricks county.
Ralph Green, missing since October with 291 dollars belonging to Standard Oil, turned himself in at Tuegon, Aviz. He confessed to larceny and was wanted in Brazil. Sheriff Tiffee said there is no money in Clay County treasury to bring him back and advised releasing him to walk home.
An outbreak of smallpox spreading from Quincy has reached Cloverdale with one new case. Quincy schools have been closed for a week and two or three severe cases plus several lighter ones are reported there.
City councilor Greencastle will hold its regular meeting in City Hall this evening. A number of important matters are to be brought before members for decision, it was announced today.
John C. Kidd of Brazil will be appointed state insurance commissioner with appointment expected by Jan. 4. Clarence C. Wysong’s term expires Jan. 1 and John J. Cramer will become chief deputy. Wysong, former Green Castle man, headed the board.
Several county officials elected in November will take office January 1 1992 while others begin later. WW Herod will replace Ford Lien as county clerk and Gertrude Oquly will replace Pearl Cole as deputy clerk. Deputy Sheriff Alva Bryan and Sheriff Edward Eitel forge will exchange posts with Bryan becoming sheriff and Eitel Jorge serving as deputy. W A Cooper remains county auditor and M May Eggers will become recorder January 1. Public officials continuing include Judge James Hughes Prosecuting Attorney M D Abrams County Coroner Frank Reed and County Commissioner H A Sherrill.
City schools close for Christmas and New Year holidays with students returning Monday January 6 for resumed classes. Local pupils enjoy the holiday break through the festive season.
Athens Texas high school basketball loses 28 to 24 to Washington in a hard fought game led by Athens center Tomkins who kept within one point at the final minutes before Washington pulled away in the late stretch. DeJernet fouled out, Tomkins scored on a long push shot, and Athens pressed to the end.
A Green Castle Terre Haute Indianapolis and Eastern Traction line car jumped its track just east of Plainfield this morning injuring Louis Hubble of Greencastle who suffered burns. He was sent to an Indianapolis hospital. The wreck damaged the car and hundreds of feet of track and halted westbound interurban traffic for hours. A railroad tie at 1205 was delayed in arriving at press time.
Postmaster General Walter K Brown orders all postal employees released and post office operations suspended from midnight December 24 to midnight December 26. No city or rural delivery or window service on Christmas Day. Only enough staff kept for regular holiday mail collections dispatches and daily newspapers.
William Syra, 27, of Bloomington, faced trial in circuit court on an alleged attempt to assault 14 year old Gracie Mortiz. Testimony from Gracie Mortiz and Lorene Owings led to the prosecution’s case with testimony from Willie Chandler, now at Pendleton reform school, supporting the defense.
Greencastle high school boys basketball hosts Lebanon on Friday and Central of Fort Wayne on Saturday in two tough home tests. The Cubs aim to rebound after early wins but face strong, revamped Lebanon and top northern foe Central, both described as formidable. A Brazil game rescheduled to January moved to Brazil to accommodate a national-champion Athens Texas show.

Shoppers downtown paused to hear Christine carols sung by First Ward School youngsters on the courthouse lawn last evening. Teachers in charge were Mrs H R Bartley Mise Paulin Helm and Mise Kathleen West. The Purple Robed choir under Kenneth Corfleet sang carols at Putnameganty hospital for patients on the second floor.
The vehicle belonging to Putnam county Sheriff-elect Alva Bryan was shipped to Indianapolis for installation of a bullet proof windshield by a major supplier that outfits official cars. This firm provides this equipment for numerous government vehicles.
Snow fall impeded automobile traffic and led to minor crashes in the city. Tilden Frazier’s car skidded after a rear wheel broke near North Jackson Street. A crash at Indiana and Walnut involved two cars but caused no injuries. By afternoon the snow ceased and skies began to clear with warmer weather expected.
Five children in Marshall insist Santa Claus exists. The article notes Mr and Mrs Santa Claus are residents of Marshall, conveying a playful local belief in a family named Santa Claus.
Maj Charles A Shepard a federal court defendant was found guilty of murdering his wife Zenana by poison in Kansas City. The trial revealed a love affair with Grace Brandon. A retrial request was announced and Sheldon intends to appeal while awaiting formal sentencing in Topeka.
Glenunden A Tennewell of Owen county near Poland died at home Sunday following an operation for acute appendicitis at Union hospital in Terre Haute. He fell ill last Monday, was rushed to the hospital and operated on Thursday. He was the only child, and his death brings grief to the family at Christmas.
Teachers and cruck rivers at Lipton Center School held a party at the school house to honor Werren Newgent, outgoing township trustee. A chair was presented to Mr Newgent and he thanked the staff for their cooperation during his term. Refreshments were served.
The annual candle lighting service will be held at Yomam County Hospital on Christmas Eve. Candles will be placed on all the windows and at 7:50 p.m. members from the Presbyterian church will sing Christmas carols at the hospital.
