Coach Harold Newgent leads the Lawrenceburg Tigers with a fast pace this season, claiming nine games with victories over Greensboro Madison and Milroy. A loss came at North Vernon in an overtime 16 to 12 thriller. Newgent, a Putnam county native, is the son of Warren and Mrs. Newgent of Clinton township.
County Road Superintendent George Walker announced the list of men serving as assistant road superintendents to help maintain Putnam county roads. The district includes about residents in each township with Greencastle represented by Robert Dero and Oscar Stallust.
Auwron Miller, 46, escaped from Indiana State Farm at Putnamville and reported to Padiana State Prison Michigan City to serve 1 to 5 years as ordered by Judge James P Hughes. Burley Joy of Terre Haute is in Putnam County Jail awaiting arraignment on escaping charges after being captured by state officials. The escape allegedly occurred on November 34 and resulted in Miller’s transfer back to the state facility. In other news Cloverdale High School defeated Fillmore 8 to 5 in a Saturday night gym game. both teams used second-string players late.
A Christmas program will be held at the Hamrick Station church on Tuesday evening at 7 50 featuring carols readings songs and a short address. A Christmas tree loaded with treats for youngsters will be a highlight. Miss Frances Rector, daughter of Mr and Mrs O J Rector, returns home from Vincennes to spend the holidays.
A well dressed man drove a late model Chevrolet to Lora Buijs filling station on the National Road and fled after filling four gallons of gasoline and ordering oil. The attendant fired four shots at the car rear. a deputy sheriff and the owner pursued to Brazil but lost track. A prior similar attempt near Clay county line ended with arrest of a couple. Arthur Hagen of Indianapolis received a sentence on petit larceny charges.
Greencastle high school basketball edged Crawfordsville 1X in a close Saturday night game. Dawson led the Cubs with six points and H. Stone added five while Thompson of Crawfordsville scored ten of his team’s fourteen. Mennally was ejected late and Hughes came on as a substitute.
In a high court review request the Ladoga Packing Company of Indiana faced the American Can Company over price differences in beans and soup cans. The Ladoga firm won a $20,000 verdict from the Clayton noth court. the Can Company sought Supreme Court review arguing price disparities favored competitors. Separately, a Green Castle judge granted Inez Black a $1,500 judgment against Daniel Tate in a contract suit. Police tracked stolen cars toward Greencastle as Homer ClarkDies in Los Angeles. he was formerly of Green Castle and is Purcell’s half brother.
Twenty years back in Greencastle on December 23 1910 the Clarence Vestal Livery Stable lends a horse and carriage for Herald fund Christmas gifts. Clyde Randel visiting Harvard in Cambridge Mass returns for holidays. James Hillis of Vancouver joins family visit with Mrs Hillis and two children. Mrs Kate Laett spends a day in Indianapolis.
Special gift services were held in Greencastle churches to lead a food drive for Congraathis and other charities. The morning offerings were distributed through regular agencies to avoid duplication while evening services in church auditoriums organized class seating and contributions.
The Citizens Trust Company filed a suit in Putnam county court seeking $4,000 plus foreclosure on real estate for a loan made September 8, 1928 to Victory School for Boys of Greeneville. Defendants include trustees Quay Brookshire Swan Brookshire Marc Bruce Brookshire and Jousse Paul Johnson. The First National Bank was appointed receiver of the institution.
Saptn Clans presented the Green eastly powtatitive with a nies Little aire for the year 1941 at noon today. Postmaster ER Bartley announced the sale of $40 000 in stamps met the required amount to maintain first class status. The post office handled a tremendous volume of mail and packages with 20 000 letters and cards in the last twelve hours, aided by six extra ex service men from the American Legion.
The Pipst Baptist Church youth group posted a new attendance high in the current pastorate. About ninety youths filled the BPR1 department yesterday evening, most staying for the Sunday preaching afterward.
Christmas programs will mark the close of the schools tomorrow after noon for the holidays. Each school will present a simple Christmas entertainment at the regular dismissal time. A chapel program will be given at the high school tomorrow afternoon, and the recess will end in January.
Cornelius Bartlett of Roachdale filed a divorce suit in the Putnam circuit court against his wife Nadine Bartlett. He cites desertion and intemperate conduct over six years of marriage, alleging she left for extended periods and resided with her parents in Belleville. The couple separated in Martinsville on September 12, with Bartlett seeking a divorce and division of property. no children were listed.
In Putnam court on Monday Rev. Oscar L. Jones files for divorce from Emma J. Jones citing cruel treatment and abandonment since 1926. The couple, married in Dana Wy Ett, lived apart since April 1926 after Emma Jones left their home.
Leonard S. Lakin aged ninety three died at his daughter Mea Cleorge Spahr’s home in Lafayette after a long period in Boone county. He formerly owned a jewelry store and worked as a wagon maker and blacksmith. He had lived with his daughter in Lafayette for fifteen years and is survived by a brother and sister. Funeral arrangements were handled by Greenetale undertaker in Lebanon. Bertram Huestis of Albany and Jack Huestis of Youngstown planned holiday visits with his parents.
A mob of about 150 men from Maryville and nearby towns tried to storm Boehman county Jail in St. Joseph to seize Raymoned Gaon charged in the murder of a 19 year old schoolteacher. Sheriffs deputies and Missouri National Guard tanks prevented entry and kept crowds at bay for hours while reports said the suspect confessed before later developments.
Thirty members gathered Friday night in the high school gymnasium for a Christmas party. They sang carols and took part in contests won by Bernice Cooper France Robertean and Doris Harlan. Refreshments matched the season.
Kiwanis club holds its regular meeting at the Christian church on Tuesday noon due to the Christmas rowe. Attendance for November and December was excellent and the division led by Milt(e) Brown of Greencastle as Lt. Governor is near the top in the state.
The Continental Chemical Company plans to open a new floor finishing plant led by Ibrahim L. Smith, 25, and Vera Suth, 22, both of Greencastle. The Stout Furniture factory in Greencastle has sat on the market after its years of operation and will host the new plant.
