Plainfield Bank Robber Fails After Christmas Morning Attempt

An apparent lone robber dressed neat entered the Plainfield bank on a Wednesday morning, opened the doors with staff help, but his plan collapsed as he failed to steal. No injuries reported.

Charity Gift Service at Voncastle Theater

The Voncastle Theater sets a charity gift morning with a free admission show and donation drive on Wednesday December 24 at 10 o clock. Patrons will bring groceries canned goods or other items to aid the poor and needy. Proceeds from the event benefit charity.

Children’s Service at Pire Christian Church Christmas Program

The Pire Christian Church near Sunday presents a morning children’s program with readings songs and exercises led by the Tee finishers Primary and Junior Departments. A cash offering supports Benevolent work through the United Christian Missionary Society in Indianapolis.

Pep Chapel Held By High School Pupils

Greencastle high school students held a pep chapel in the gym at 1 pm to boost the basketball team before the Crawfords ville game. Prof. Warren J. Yount praised the team’s performance against Martinsville and urged fans to back the squad.

Putnam County Orchestra Holds Practice Session

The Putnam County Orchestra held a Thursday night practice in the high school building. Attendance was down due to slick roads, but those present had a productive session. Directed by Principal R. Young of Greencastle High School plans were set for a series of concerts across county schools in the second semester.

Danville Man Vestal Hurt in Train Collision

Danville county commissioner John F. Vestal was seriously injured when the automobile he rode in was struck by a fast passenger train at a street crossing east of Plainfield. He suffered multiple fractures including both bones below the knee, a broken nose, facial and head wounds, and possible internal injuries.

Moffett Hart sidelined by ankle injury in DePauw practice

DePauw star forward Rex MoeiPett is out with a badly wrenched ankle and will miss early February action. Coach Tubby Moffett said Younes Moffett injured his ankle in scrimmage before the Barnham game. DePauw rode De Walt to fill the vacancy as Copeland remains a non starting letterman.

Charity Basketball Game Set by Kiwanis and Rotary

Kiwanis and Rotary clubs plan a December 25 charity basketball game in the high school gym. A curtain raiser features L and H Chevrolet team versus an independent club with a bid to bring the L Strauss team of Indianapolis. Stunts will occur between quarters. proceeds go to charity, with tickets urged to be bought by all Green Castle workers.

Hutchins of Roachdale was named a sophomore basketball manager by Harry G. Scholler, Wabash College athletics director. He is a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.

Penal Farm Escape Captured and Brought to Jail

Aaron Miller, an alleged escapee from the Indiana State Farm at Putnamville, is in the Putnam county jail for arraignments on escape charges before Judge James P. Hughes. He was captured after a short search following a Thursday attempt to flee. Captain Ralph Howard of the state farm brought him to the jail. an affidavit was filed in the Putnam circuit court. Miller was sentenced from the Gibson circuit court.

Automobbler Car Damaged After Skid On Icy Street

An automobile owned and driven by W. F. Bateman a Tiger Cub basketball mentor was badly damaged when it struck the curb at Walnut and Bloomington streets early Thursday night. A wheel and axle were broken and Bateman lost control as the car skidded on the icy pavement.

Putnam County Plans Bid for Poor Farm Supplies

County Auditor W E Gill announced bids will be received until noon on the first Monday in January when the Putnam county board of commissioners meets to set contracts for supplies for the county poor farm.

A buggy collision occurred when a horse became unmanageable and threw riders Fred Crawford and Virgil McCammack. John Dunbar’s buggy was involved and both riders were injured. Putnam County to Fill Appointments at Saturday Meeting

The Board of Commissioners in Putnam County will meet in the courthouse commissioners room this Saturday afternoon to fill several vacancies due to term expirations on January 1. The offices include county attorney, hospital board member, and positions for matron and janitor at the courthouse.

Erection of filling station completed at Jackson and Walnut

The filling station at the corner of Jackson and Walnut streets by Paul Johnson of Johnwn Construction Co, Indianapolis, was completed Thursday and turned over to Sinclair Oil Co on a ten year lease. Oil pumps and equipment will be installed and the station will operate within the next week or ten days.

Man is sentenced to Indiana State Prison for wife arsenic poisoning

Ernest Pryor, 32, Martinsville laborer, was convicted of poisoning his wife to pursue an affair with her cousin Elsie Hamm of Brazil. He received a prison term of two to twenty one years in the Indiana State Prison after a lengthy trial in Marion County Court.

Alto Licenses On Sale Starting December 26

Auto license plates for 1941 will be ready for distribution Friday December 26 according to John Rightsell and O J Reetor who supervise the city distribution. Plates have arrived and are being prepared for issuing from 22 South Jackson Street across from The Herald office. Miss Lorene Luther will assist in issuing licenses and distributing plates. The first weeks are usually very busy with hundreds of plates issued daily.
