Savannah readers are invited to a Corn Club dinner at 6 PM hosted by Simpson Stoner of the Corn Show at the First National Bank, featuring corn dishes from stewed corn to corn pone. The event welcomes any full fledged correspondent to join for free, with dinner available for those who pay.
January 2 1981 fixed for start of sale of the 19241 auto license plates. Plates usually go on sale December 15 but changes in county heads delay and supplies have not yet been sent to branches though most branch heads selected.
Jessie Junior Ellis age seven writes to Santa in the Herald asking for gifts. He is the son of Mr and Mrs J L Ellis of Brunerstown and states he is in the second grade. He requests an Indian set an automobile and a tractor.
Displays at the Central National Bank showcase Harry Stamp and his Belgian horses, with King Albert’s Cup from Belgium presented at the International Live Stock Show in Chicago. The awards include four large silver water pitchers, a large serving tray, a silver compote, and the prized King Albert’s Cup, plus many gold medals and ribbons from events in Waterloo Iowa Springfield Illinois and Wisconsin.
Entry judging for the fifth annual Putnam county corn show continues with more than 140 entrants under Herbert C. Watson of Tipton as feature. A dinner program at the Country Club includes A. G. Brown and Marty Stamp among speakers. Winners in Class one and two announced. rest to be named at press time.
The infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Yuneker of Crown Point was brought to Greencastle for burial today in Forest Hill Cemetery. The child died Thursday. Mr. Yuneker taught at Greencastle High School and Mrs. Yuneker is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C F Mathes.
Exhibition shows a $7 000 George Bellows portrait and other graphic works at Asbury Hall for ten days. Black and white etchings and woodcuts by leading American artists travel to Washington DC next. Colored prints stay through holidays at the gallery. Dürer and Rembrandt prints return to John Herron Art Museum. Rembrandt etching The Windmill is highlighted among notable prints. The piece notes a revival of modern printmaking and mentions early European and Japanese influence.
An attempted burglary at G. W. Grubbs Hardware on Greencastle’s square was halted when a basement door was found ajar. Deputy Roy Abrams reports the Knights of Pythias 13th district plans its February annual meeting in Greencastle.
The Senate passed the emergency public improvements appropriation, with $110 million set for a nationwide program. Final House reconsideration may follow, and immediate employment is promised once enacted. Republican leaders seek party harmony while President Hoover and Senator Watson plan further talks.
Chicago reports the first waves of gang warfare in weeks as Rudolph Moreno and James Tomasulo are shot three times each and dumped from cars into a ditch near the Beverly Country Club. A passerby found one man alive and the other dead at a hospital, as Mrs. Martha Van Woergen witnessed four cars speeding away.
Otis Floyd, a junior at Greeneas le high school, was named yell leader succeeding Pat Cancilla who becomes basketball team manager. Floyd will lead the yells at the pep rally and is joined by James Grimes andack Boyd as assistants. Howard Maxwell taught a new pep song The Pep Squad Parade.
County schools will take a Christmas vacation from December 19 to December 29 as announced by County Superintendent John C Vermillion. Schools dismiss Friday December 19 and return Monday December 29. Only New Year’s Day January 1 is a holiday in Putnam county schools.
Fire caused by a heated stove and a defective flue damaged the frame house owned by Harry Moran at 108 West Daesy Street in North Greencastle. The blaze began in the attic near the tie and spread to walls as firefighters used chemicals and booster tanks to extinguish it.
Putuan Post No. 98 of the American Legion plans a regular meeting in Legion Hall Monday evening to consider the current unemployment situation. Commander Robert Hoffman said the organization is working to keep veterans employed this winter and will cooperate with other agencies to address the issue.
About 150 people attended Meharry Hall Wednesday night to hear a debate between DePauw University and University of Michigan teams on unemployment insurance. No decision was given. DePauw's Myrion Yoder fainted and was treated at the dormitory by a physician after exhaustion during his speech.
Hugo Lynch alias Hughes 25 of Newcastle arrested in Petersburg after tip led sheriffs to his grandfather's home. He is the last of four men charged in the October 10 North Salem bank robbery which netted about 2200 dollars. Three others already convicted in Hendricks and Indianapolis cases. Lynch to be returned to Danville for trial. others serving sentences include Garret Dinkla James Lynneho Hughes brother and William Bush. The gang's hub was said to be Lonnie Lovelace's home in Louisville area.
E P Jarrell known locally as Tobey Jarrell died in Indianapolis from poison. He was found dead in the Prince ton hotel room with a bottle of poison and a letter to his son Prank, principal of Reelaville schools. Survived by his wife in Indianapolis and son in Reelsville. He was 57.
