Charles J. Arrold recounts letters from John S. Hunt and Everett W. Jones detailing boyhood days, hunting trips, a humorous drum episode, and a plan to join The Bills initiation alongside President Oxnam. Rotary meeting notes, Dr Hutcheson pictures, and a probate estate appointment conclude the item.
Gray Potter, owner of the Potter Shoe Store, underwent major surgery Wednesday in Putnam County Hospital for a stomach ailment. His physician Dr W R Hetchesen reports he is resting easy this morning after several days of illness.
Henry Ray mond Pickard a Montgomery World War veteran died at his Ladoga home after a long illness tuberculosis from war wounds. He served in the Marines, was wounded at Soissons, and decorated three times, signature of Petain among honors. Survived by wife Elsie Davis and two sons Carl and Lee. burial Friday with details to follow.
Ruth Nichols, piloting the New Cincinnati, completed a two day coast to coast flight in 1 hour 21 minutes 43 seconds, surpassing her sex records and placing among top fliers. She returned in a borrowed stock Lockheed Vega from Wichita to New York in 6 hours 71 minutes 4% seconds, a claimed record for continuous unbroken flight over about 1,300 miles.
The L. and H. Chevrolet Sales basketball team left Wednesday night for Michigan to play about ten games, with six already on the schedule in the central part of the state. Travelers are Duane Longden Brick Miller Paul Kerr Marion Crawley and James Crow.
A called meeting of Temple Lodge No. 47 is scheduled for Friday at 7 50 p m. The agenda includes the Fellow Craft degree duties and related rites. Members are urged to attend.
The American Farm Bureau Federation adopts a resolution to form a cooperative corporation to lease and operate Muscle Shoals. It opposes amending the agricultural marketing act now and urges immediate funding for drought relief and river and harbor projects from the 1950 act.
J H Stone versus Mark Kocher ended without trial as the parties reached a settlement. Stone, a Pennsylvania Railroad repairer, claimed $250 for damage to his car from a collision at Bloomington and Washington streets on June 2. Kocher, of Northwood, was alleged to be at fault. the exact settlement amount was not disclosed.
County agent Floyd Miller announced plans for a Purdue University short course in Green Castle on January 6 and 7. The event includes eight periods each for men and women covering Agriculture and home management, with a goodwill banquet and an entertainment program. No charges are planned and many county farm men and women are expected to attend. Purdue extension workers will lead classes with cooperation from the Greencastle Chamber of Commerce and the Putnam County Farm Bureau.
In Greencastle on Friday Mrs R L O Wair hosts the Century Club 1kth birthday anniversary with a program led by Mrs Frank Donner. Indianapolis couple G S Belden bought a farm at Hamrick station and moved there today. A good family horse is for sale, and land in Cloverdale near Wellama on Broad Street.
Bill and Bob famous radio and vaudeville team bring W WAN portable radio station to town on Dec 12. Shell Petroleum sponsors the event with a series of programs featuring imitations of well known announcers to entertain the public.
Presbyterian minister Dr Cadman of Brooklyn spoke at DePauw University chapel. The extended period featured an ovation as he discussed The Mission of the Republic and traced Americas development from Rome and Greece to constitutional growth. He urged Americans to rise to the occasion and foster international peace.
A letter by 25 year old Orville Bush, mailed to his Danville father, states life is not worth living and indicates intent of self destruction. Bush's body was found on state road 1% south of Ryavil. a pistol borrowed from his landlady was found at the scene.
Prof Harold Zink of DePauw University will speak to the Putnam County league of Women Voters Friday at 2 30 PM in the city library basement. He will discuss Efficiency in Government in a public meeting.
Eno White, 50, was convicted by Mayor W L Denman in city court and sentenced to 10 days at Indiana State Farm Putnamville. He was taken to the prison today by Deputy Sheriff Alva Bryan White after being charged with stealing a neighbor's sheep from Hubert Sellers. He also received a $1 fine plus costs.
Dr Joseph A Leighton professor of philosophy at Ohio State University will speak at the University Vesper Service in the Methodist Church Sunday night His topic What Is Man He is a Canadian born scholar with degrees from Ottawa and Harvard and studied at Berlin Tubingen and Erlangen He has taught at Ohio State since 1910 and was previously at Stanford and Holtworth College Geneva He is a Phi Beta Kappa member and author of several philosophy and religion works
G Tharp of 315 South Water Street Crawfordsville reported his Hyd Heinz Company vehicle broken into near the Delta Zeta sorority house on East Seminary Street. Thieves took several cases of fig pudding, breakfast food, spoons and a gallon of pickles, with no suspects yet identified. Chief Dobbs found mangled jars and pickles near the Second Ward School, but no leads on the thieves.

The sixth Putnam county corn show sponsored by First National Bank and Citizens Trust Company opens this morning in Greencastle. Entries of county corn are displayed through Saturday with limited yields due to drought. Corn king Herbert Watson of Tipton will judge entries Friday and Saturday and address growers at the corn school Saturday afternoon.
