Edmund Lynch of Cloverdam and Pleming Lynch of Roachdale attended a Shrine Fair class in Indianapolis last week. The report notes a period of mild temperature with a low around 35 degrees and a high near 80.
James Bridges of Greencastle suffered a bad cut on his right hand when he fell in his home on East Washington Street early this morning. Mrs. Bridges is among the county’s oldest residents and will be years old later this month.
The Greencastle Business and Professional Women's club will lead this year’s sale of Health Bonds to support tuberculosis programs. Miss Helen Black chairs the effort, with Dr. T. A. Sigler as county chairman, and bonds priced at 5 and 25 dollars. Proceeds fund the Putnam county TB clinic and school visits by the county nurse.
A lone robber robbed Adna Moon, attendant at a Plainfield filling station, of about 150 dollars after forcing the safe to be opened. The thief drove a car with Kansas plates and was chased briefly by the marshal from Wainfield before escaping toward the National road. The bandit taunted Moon by claiming he knew the combination from Thanksgiving.
Five youths escaped injury when a car owned by Paul Allen and driven by his son was struck by an eastbound Interurban near Seminary street and College Avenue about 9 40 pm. The car was badly damaged and towed to Franklin Street Garage. Names were not learned. occupants included two Allen sons, Sarah Jane Durham, a Benefield girl, and a girl named McAlinden. The Interurban reportedly was not fast, pulling away from the station while the Allen car was said to be speeding southward.
County Treasurer Gilbert Ogles reported Putnam County collected 472154.04 in the fall 1940 tax installment by November 3 with 31660.04 delinquent. Largest city total was Greencastle 89120.97. Greencastle township 69580.50. Bainbridge 562000.00. Delinquent and township figures listed.
Lee Glen Walsh of Ladoga was seriously injured when his car left the Ladoga road about 2 15 am Monday and overturned two or three times. Crawfordsville police pursued the vehicle but could not stop it before it wrecked in a field. Walsh was extricated and taken to his Ladoga home before being returned to Culver hospital in Crawfordsville with head injuries and a torn ear.
George Philip Roller son of EB Roller of Newman is appointed a member of the Town Guards Unit and deputy sheriff. The guards are backed by the Douglas County Bankers Association under county sheriff supervision. Roller brings two scarce World War II era guns, a Hotchkiss machine gun on an anti aircraft tripod and a lighter machine rifle with high rates of fire, suited for pursuit and rapid ranges. further details continued on Page 2.
The Greencastle city council meets at city hall to discuss annexing additional territory and taxable property. Members surveyed several suburbs yesterday and are expected to recommend annexing substantial property.
In Grencastle 1910 Miss Helen Broadstreet entertained 17 girls at dinner at her parents home in honor of her 16th birthday. Contributions to the Herald Christmas fund reach $175 for needy children. William Anderson at Hamble factory injured his index finger. Mrs Bridges and Miss Virginia Black invite guests to a reception for Mrs Andrew Durham.
Congressman elect C C Gillen spoke to about seventy five members of the Brotherhood of the Methodist Church on Fundamentals of good Government. Rev Brumbaugh discussed Japan s progress. Dr Bryan Wilson led prayer. Judge James P Hughes introduced Gillen. resolutions praised Gillen and wished him well. dinner was served by a Woman's League section led by Mrs Lee Reeves.
Indiana State Highway Commission reports 20 foot concrete paving will extend from Greencastle to Crawfordsville as part of the 1931 construction program. New right of way work and bridges planned, with paving continuing south toward New Albany and Lafayette. Local support from Greencastle Crawfordsville Bloomington and Bedford groups. Active right of way acquisition underway and work to start immediately.
The second death from cerebro spinal meningitis in the last days occurred at the Penal Farm at Put iamindie. A nineteen year old colored boy Henry Lovelace of Indianapolis died of the disease. The body was prepared at the farm and taken to Indianapolis for burial. The boy's home was Indianapolis.
DePauw University hosted its second international debate in the Little Theatre with a German university team opposing DePauw on nationalism as a positive force in the modern world. No decision was given after two fifteen minute speeches and a five minute rebuttal per side.
Five Gary youths await a Crown Point grand jury report on charges connected to the death of 18 year old Arlene Draves after a drinking party and alleged attack on November 30. The suspects Virgil Kirkland David Thompson Harry Shirk Leon Stanford and Paul Barton face first degree murder charges. indictments on two counts could carry the death penalty.
An unidentified man about 30, six feet tall and 200 pounds with sandy hair was found shot through the temple and flung from a speeding car on state road 59 near Brazil Indiana. Fingerprints and hotel notes were collected to aid identification.
A two to three hour program is slated as a main event of the Pur due Short Course in Putnam county set for January 6 and 7. The show will showcase about twelve to fifteen numbers largely by adult performers with a lively, popular presentation. Admission is not charged at this time.
Four short moving pictures promoting health will be shown to pupils in Greencastle and the county consolidated schools next week. The films from the State Board of Health were secured by county nurse Mary Agnes Miller. Titles include Sun Babies Posture Ways of Preventing Diphtheria and Mouth Hygiene.
