Plans are completed for the national convention of Phi Eta Sigma honorary scholastic fraternity for freshmen to be held on the DePauw University campus Friday and Saturday. About thirty delegates are expected from schools including University of Florida Georgia Tech North Carolina State College University of Alabama Mississippi Oklahoma Montana State University of Missouri Washington University in St Louis Illinois North Dakota South Dakota Wisconsin Michigan Tennessee Lake Forest College and Miami University. Delegates will be housed in fraternities and men’s dormitories. The Deans of Men at the University of Illinois, a founder, lead the business program. The DePauw chapter has the largest percentage of men qualifying among chapters and Phi Beta Sigma is allied with Alpha Lambda Delta, a national scholastic sorority for freshmen.
Harry ames colored, 46, a former Greencastle resident, died Tuesday morning in Indianapolis city hospital of pneumonia. The body was taken to McCurry Funeral Home. Survived by widow, mother Mrs. Wyatt James, brothers and sisters including Ruth Lord, Ollie James, George James, James Richard, Guy James, and Mrs. William Herring, and two children. Funeral Friday at 2:20 P.M. in the colored M. F. P. church with burial at Forest Mills Cemetery.
Phillip Woolf of near Brazil was awarded $400 by a Putnam circuit court jury against a Pennsylvania railroad for two buildings damaged by a June 1920 fire. Woolf originally sought $5,425, with the case moved from Clay county to Putnam on venue grounds after many witnesses testified about a store building, fixtures, and an outbuilding burned from train sparks.
Mary Agnes Miller Putnam County health nurse releases the November monthly report. It shows 48 school inspections and 122 social service visits, with details on classroom checks, skin infections, sore throat exclusions, parent notices, and ongoing clinic activities including tuberculosis and orthopedic services.
Santa Claus sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce visited nearly every county school Monday and Tuesday. He handed each child a lolly pop with a Christmas opening handbill attached. Teachers approved the surprise visit led by Jacob Fitel John Rightsell and R P Mullins.
In Mooresville Indiana two infants, Leslie Gilbert age 2 and Wanda Faye six weeks, burned to death when a tent at a construction camp near Montroria caught fire late yesterday. They were children of Mr and Mrs Wayne Shew of Thompsonville Illinois. The mother was away at a nearby well and another child and Mrs Shew tried unsuccessfully to rescue them.
Santa Claus will tour downtown streets tonight and at 7 30 PM go to the courthouse to distribute gifts as in previous Christmas openings. Registration closes promptly at 7 o'clock. Townspeople and country visitors spent the afternoon downtown viewing holiday displays while store staff prepared last minute gift displays.
Archie J. Kahl, Danville lawyer, seeks a new trial after a jury awarded him $1 against Louis Stevens, Greencastle druggist, for a Danville 1928 collision. He claims verdict contrary to law and evidence and argues the award is too small. Robert Stevens and Otis Gulley named as defendants.

A. Day won the contract for a gravel road in Jackson and Franklin townships with a bid of 6500. Putnam County grand jury began probing the Otis Hendren murder at the interurban station. Professor RA Ogg spoke to the Farmers' Institute in Clay City, while the Gentlemen's Club planned a library meeting and Professor North addressed politics and poverty.
Increasing cloudiness brings colder tonight and Thursday with unsettled conditions. Low temperatures expected between 20 and 25 degrees, according to the regional forecast.
Danville Indiana police arrest 17 year old Gurney Friend after a stolen pocket book ties him to a series of break ins in the business district. He confessed to the robberies but named no accomplice and awaits further judicial action after a hearing before Judge Henry Dougan.
Theophilus J Moll 68 Indianapolis attorney and former Marion county judge died on a train en route to Evansville for his mother’s funeral. Burial set in Greenwood. Survived by widow Play Carnes Moll and three children including Wood C Moll and Jewell T Moll. Born Evansville May 25 1872.
The Putnam county orchestra with about 180 members from county schools will hold its second practice session of the year in the old high school gymnasium Thursday afternoon. It is directed by Principal C. R. Young of Greencastle High School.
The Putnam Lodge No. 45 of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows elected officers for the ensuing year including Noble Grand Glenn Shinn Vice Grand Paul Rader Recording Secretary J A Friend Financial Secretary O T Ellis Treasurer RK Ul Pierce Trustee Drew Millgrad Trustee Roy Hillis at a recent meeting.
Courtland W. Young a wealthy New York magazine publisher was found dead in his Fifth Avenue area apartment as a fire swept the living room. Born 1876 in New Orleans he founded Young's Magazine in 1899 and published Breezy Stories Yellow Book and Droll Stories among others. His long record of marital disputes culminated in a 1928 decree and ongoing custody cases with Dorothea Campbell.
William Buser, Montgomery County grand jury indicted Monday on manslaughter in the death of Joyce Whitlock 10, struck by a car as she alighted from a school bus. Bond set at 2400. Edgar A. Bumpus of Indianapolis earlier charged and free on 2500 bond pending trial.
The High Point Oil Company held a meeting Tuesday night in Crawfordsville with about one hundred employees to discuss group insurance. Homer Rogers of Indianapolis and W. P. Sackett of Greencastle spoke before a general discussion on policies and related business issues.
