Pheasants Roost in Shade Tree As State Stocking Campaign Succeeds

A pair of pheasants were found roosting in a shade tree on west Washington street proving the state game warden’s stocking effort. Bob Longden spotted them and confirmed with Sol Sudranski. Night officer George Knauer guarded the birds while Betty Mullins rescued her dogs from the tree.

Funeral date changed for Mrs Mary Duncan

Funeral services for Mrs Mary Hee Duncan 59 of Jenn Nes township Owen county are moved to Saturday at 10 AM from Friday. She died after a three month cancer illness Wednesday night. Putnam County Schools Open New Academic Year

Putnam County schools opened today with teachers meeting pupils at various buildings and initial instruction given. Classes were dismissed after a short session and will resume Tuesday while Labor Day is observed as a holiday. Greencastle city schools delay start until September 8.

Indiana State Fair Opens With Record Exhibits

The 78th Indiana State Fair begins Saturday featuring a record 1600 exhibitors and expanded livestock and agricultural displays. Highlights include night horse racing, the Hawaiian Nights pyro-spectacle, Bohumir Kryl Band performances, Grand Circuit harness races, auto and progress air show on final day, and Boys and Girls Club programs with calf pig and poultry judging and a Coliseum parade.

Barnett Brothers Circus Charms Greencastle Audience

The Barnett Brothers Motor hauled three ring circus played a one day stand at West Walnut street Showgrounds with afternoon and night shows. A noon parade through downtown drew large crowds and both performances were well attended and praised as among the cleanest little shows in years.

Roachdale Girl Held for Fraudulent Check

Opal Fitzsimmons age 17 was arrested by Crawfordsville Police Chief Harrison Young on a charge of issuing fraudulent checks. The Roachdale resident was taken into custody in front of city hall and released on 300 bond. The affidavit was filed by Harry Mayer a grocery store manager. She denies the charge.

Cloverdale Road Reopened After Paving

The Cloverdale road from the National road to Cloverdale is now open to traffic after several weeks of closure for new pavement. The surface matches the section from Greencastle to the National road, and the road was opened Thursday.

Ladoga Canning Factory Records Strong Corn Output

The Ladoga canning factory opened last week with sixty men and fifty women at work on corn. On Tuesday August 26 a record 81,000 cans of corn were processed. Tomato pulp production will start once corn is cleared.

Wooden Check Artist Arrested on Fraud Charge

Putnam Circuit Court charged H R Gorham of Fillmore with issuing a fraudulent check for 15 dollars after delivering a wooden check to James Sallust drawn on the First National Bank and marked no funds. Deputy Sheriff Alva Bryan arrested Gorham and the case was dismissed after he made good the issue.

Two Brazil Residents Suffer Painful Burns From Aerial Accident

Mrs Ernest Waymire and her three year old daughter were seriously burned when an electrically charged radio aerial fell to the ground. A short circuit sent 100 volts into the aerial, the girl touched it barefoot and could not release the wire. The mother rushed to help, leaving the radio on, causing burns to feet, hands, arms, and legs.

Death takes Greencastle man Friday

Will Conklin, longtime Greencastle electrical dealer and Spanish American War veteran, died at his South Locust Street home after several months illness. Funeral Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Christian church with Rev. B H Bruner officiating. Burial in Forest Hill cemetery. Odd Fellows and Spanish War veterans to participate. He is survived by two daughters, a son, a brother, and two sisters.

Arnold Family Reunion Planned for Next Sunday

The Arnold family reunion will occur next Sunday August 1 at Allendale springs. It will be the first such county event by the Arnold family with a basket dinner at noon. Body of 8 year old found aids manhunt in South Bend

Police and volunteers search for two alleged kidnapers after Marberine Appel disappeared from playtime. The girl, 8, was found mutilated in a nearby lot with a head wound and baling wire around her neck. A suspect, Jack Spencer, 2, was briefly detained. Attorney General declines Marion lynching probe

Indiana Attorney General James M. Oden said he nearly decided not to attend the Marion grand jury investigation into the lynching of two Black men on August 7. He believes deputies Merle Wall and Farle Stroupe can manage the case without his presence.

Hogs 4,000 head with holdovers 2,007 and overall market steady to somewhat lower. Light, light-weight and feeder categories range mostly 1040 to 1134 per hundredweight with various weight bands. Cattle and calves show steady to lower demand with good and choice cattle 950 to 1175, cows 575 to 750, yearlings and heifers mixed. Sheep and lambs about 1,000, market steady.
