Mrs Mary Alice Duncan 59 of Jennings Township Owen County died at home after a three month cancer illness. She was the wife of Dr John H Duncan and a former Cloverdale resident. Survived by husband two children Mrs Frank Anderson Midland and Ray Duncan Indianapolis mother Mrs John J Whalen Cloverdale. Funeral Friday 2 30 PM Hudson Hill Church with Rev Elmer McCurry Brownsville. Burial Hudson Hill Cemetery. McCurry Greencastle funeral home preparing body.
The Barnett Bros three ring circus arrived from Rockville with sixty motor trucks to the old circus grounds on West Walnut. A noon parade attracted a large crowd and two performances, a matinee and an evening show, were announced for the day.
Mrs Mary C Beebee wife of Rev Charles C Beebee pastor of the Methodist church at Newport was buried at Crawfordsville Monday morning Funeral services were conducted by Rev A T Briggs of Greencastle and Rev J J Wilson of Lafayette She was born at Rob Roy on September 2 1869 daughter of John and Margaret Crawford and sister of the late Mrs Frank Nave
Indianapolis preparations for the Indiana State Fair opening intensify with carpenters decorators and exhibit specialists at work. Nearly 1 700 open class entries and more than 4 H entries are planned with premiums totaling about 177000. Livestock exhibits approach 6000 head as Purdue and Indiana University displays join conservation exhibits on site.
DePauw University gears up for registration starting September 10 for freshmen and September 12 for upperclassmen. More than 600 transcripts await, with 305 scholarships noted in the Edward Reetor Foundation as deposits build for dorms. Faculty changes include Mark FE Johnson heading the voice department.
James Sparks of Cloverdale, resident at the Masonic Home in Franklin, is confined to bed and unable to walk or use his hands. Friends report his condition as critical. Horace Frazier and wife have returned from a cross country motor trip covering seven thousand miles to California and the Northwest visiting the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone Park, Los Angeles and Seattle.
Weather forecast notes a chance of showers in the east central portion tonight. Tonight will be slightly cooler in the north and south portions, with Friday turning cooler in the north and south regions.
DePauw University enters the 1930 football season with Raymond Neal appointed head coach. Neal, a former all American tackle, will oversee a line heavy squad with six of seven returning lettermen as linemen. He aims to build from a young team while naming no captain and using game captains for each match. The Tigers host five home games and travel to Boston University and Earlham, with Old Gold Day against Indiana Wesleyan and the traditional Wabash game scheduled.
In Greens castle The Herald recalls Aug 26 1910 with calls to abolish the Gamewell fire alarm system causing fears of higher fire costs. Ora Lyons and Rev Lester Jones wed at Alonzo Cook home. Pete Stoner and Harry Shepard open pool and billiard hall on east square. County institute closes today as Harry Moore and sister Annice Moore Rhorer provide music.
Russellville will start classes Friday August 29 for pupil book lists. Labor Day will be a state fair observance option. On Tuesday September 2 the new term begins with principal I H Westland and teachers Frank Smith Noel Nicholson Er W Baker Juanita Jarvis Ruth B Dodd Inah Blue Dorothy Jeffries Leatha Irwin Gladys Sutherlin and Lucille Hart new Latin and physical training instructor.
Evansville Indiana Aug 28 The Kiwanis Clubs of Indiana begin their sth annual convention September 16 at West Baden with two business sessions set for September 16 17 and 18 devoted mainly to play and fellowship. Governor John J Early will deliver the annual message with speakers from Milwaukee Huntington Madisonville and North Manchester. A proposed officers election plan change will be voted on at the first session.
The Dorsett family sets a reunion at Cold Water Park near Stilesville for the Sunday after Labor Day with Eminence High School band music and a full entertainment program. August 24, 1980 saw about eighty relatives at Bainbridge Schoolhouse for the 86th reunion with foods, prayers, readings, songs, and officer elections for the coming year.
The West Floyd Economics Club will meet with Mrs. Leona Greenlee on September 10. All current members are urged to attend if possible to decide on important business.
Albert J. McKay 28 of Greencastle and Leland Burford 24 of Indianapolis died when their plane crashed near Turkey Run Airport ten miles north of Rockville. Witnesses say Burford, learning aviation, appeared at the controls as the craft nosedived from about 200 feet while attempting a landing. The bodies were taken to Daviess mortuary in Marshall. McKay had been a regular Turkey Run pilot and had Greencastle ties including DePauw attendance.
Locals report Glen H Lyons attorney in Orleans on business. Joanna Truesdel will admitted to probate in Putnam probate court. Fay S Hamilton attorney made trips to French Lick and West Baden. Wanda June born to Mr and Mrs Eddie Buis at Putnam county hospital Wednesday night. Ray Fisher, longtime drug clerk in Greencastle, joins R P Mullins Drug store. Mrs Margaret Mathews home on East Seminary after Winona Lake visit. Russell Welch at Mullins Drug Co confined at home with stomach trouble no improvement. Mr and Mrs A G Brown and sons William and Mort in Greencastle en route to Louisville from Culver where William had been in camp this summer.
