Charles J. Walter S. Frye of 709 Ohio Street files for divorce from Mae Frye in Putnam circuit court today. He cites cruel and inhuman treatment and infidelity, seeks custody of Walter Jr. and Mildred Bernice, ages 4 and 7, and notes six years of alleged extramarital associations and late-night outings.
Wilbur Donner of Greencastle, a leading member of the Greencastle American Legion post, was elected district commander at the state convention in Fort Wayne this week. The district includes several counties in the fifth congressional district. As district commander he joins the state executive committee. Donner’s post is noted for its size and activities, influencing the honor.
Horace Cosner aged 43, son of A. J. Cosner of this city, died suddenly at his home in Cleveland Ohio. Funeral and burial were in Cleveland. He had been recovering from heat but collapsed. He leaves a widow two children his father two sisters Mrs L J Phillips and Mrs Harry Moore and three brothers Oscar Earl and A J Cosner. Annice Moore accompanied A J Cosner to attend the funeral.
Lester Mosteller of near Lena was taken to Clay County Hospital after a hunting accident. The right hand little finger was mangled when the gun discharged as he tripped while holding the muzzle. Doctor Palm performed emergency amputation. Brazil Times reports.
Willis Be Gill county auditor is confined to his Anderson street home by illness rheumatism and complications.
Green Castle city council voted to draft an ordinance controlling miniature golf operations within city limits after resident George Ensign complained the Moonlit course at Arlington and Washington disturbed neighborhood peace. The plan includes parking limits, quieter operation, a $10 monthly fee for course owners, and a nightly closing time to curb noise and traffic.
Putnam county teachers gathered for their annual institute with Roy P Wisehart state superintendent and Dean L H Dirks of DePauw University as speakers. Wisehart spoke at 11 o clock and Dirks will speak again Thursday morning. the institute closes Thursday afternoon under County Superintendent John C Wilmillion.
Dr Gilbert D Rhea opens his office today in the former Wir Bence space. Hours are 10 to 12, 12 to 4, and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The office is remodeled with modern furniture.
Mrs. Fred V Thomas and son Frederick go on a ten day motor trip to Michigan. Mrs Arthur Morgan of Rantoul Illinois visits her parents Mr and Mrs J C Brothers. Mrs Will Glidewell and daughter Suetle of Fillmore visit Indianapolis. Mrs Horace Askew and sons Bob and Bill return from a ten day trip to Wayne Pennsylvania. Mrs James Hardy and daughter Betty Ann of Bronx New York visit Greencastle. The Reed Reunion set for Monday September 1 at the Rollings home in Reelsville. The Roachdale bank appointed administrator of Ella Rich estate bond 2000. Jameson family of West Franklin Street attend Crawfordsville fair and plan to stay with relatives. Hen theft reported near Cloverdale. 40 hens stolen from a chicken house. Mrs DeRhodes and children of Toledo Ohio visiting family in Greencastle area. Jean Cash, son of Clyde Cash, injured then returns home from Putnam County Hospital. Mr and Mrs George R Christie and sons Stephen and George of Miami Florida left after summer visit. Christie family had stayed in town. Mr and Mrs Charles Kimball and daughters Mary and Caroline of Mount Vernon Indiana visit Greencastle. Kimball a former resident and DePauw graduate.
The Greencastle city council plans to dismantle the Gamewell Fire alarm system drawing objections from residents. The system features twenty alarm boxes throughout the city. Pauline Edwards of Roachdale and Osborne Hutchins wed August 18 in a lawn ceremony at the Edwards home. Ed Hauck Jonathan Hauck J W Stoner S J Wilton and Dan Pollom returned from the Cross 8 Land excursion to Texas with three men buying farms.
The Barnett Bros three ring circus heads to the old Walnut Street grounds tomorrow with a noon parade promised. Advance notices tout a genuine circus show with trained animals, elephants or not, and a traveling troupe delivering a modern act by motor trucks.
DePauw University will show an education exhibit at the state fair in the Indiana University building. The display features framed photographs of campus buildings and student houses, plus a four page illustrated pamphlet in school colors describing DePauw as an educational institution.
The Felt River district association of primitive Baptists met for its 106th annual session at the Eel River church with large attendance. Oliver Wright hosted near Manhattan and services ran each day morning afternoon and evening. The next session will be at Otter Creek church near Lena in August 151.
Putnam county board of commissioners will receive bids for improvement grading and paving of the George B R Coffman and other roads in Cloverdale township at the office of W B R Gill county auditor on September 15. The proposed highway is a quarter mile long and to be paved with McCadem. Estimated cost 825 dollars.
The annual Campbell family reunion will be held next Sunday August 1 at Cold Water Park two miles east of Stilesville. Family members are urged to attend for the gathering and activities planned at the park.
Claude Dillner, 27, a farm head, is jailed in Valparaiso Indiana after kidnapping Betty Ann Poster. Prosecutors say all applicable charges will be pressed to the limit as authorities investigate the case.
State highway officials reveal a preliminary temporary route numbered 24 from Cayuga east through Kingman and Bloff Mills to intersect State Road 13 near Russellville. The plan, spanning Montgomery and Fountain counties, calls for maintenance takeover with landowner right-of-way concerns possible. Fountain county to build bridges while Montgomery County proceeds at next week’s meeting.
A grass fire started near the Atlas Phillips and adjoining farms about miles east of Fillmore this afternoon. A general alarm was sounded and farmers in the Fillmore vicinity rushed to the scene to help wet it down and control the blaze.
Tri Kappa plans a Thursday evening gathering at Mrs. Walker’s Elm Street home. Section Three will host the Woman’s Union at the Christian Church Friday at 2 50 PM. Mike Lucile Glidewell and friends return from an eight week motor trip to Denver Rocky Mountain National Park and Cheyenne. Miss Glidewell visits parents before returning to Elkhart to teach in the city schools.
The fifteen Christian churches of Montgomery county plan a fellowship meeting at Ladoga Christian church on August 31. Derivations are expected from each church and efforts are under way to ensure a successful day. A basket dinner will be served in a large tent at noon followed by the usual program in the afternoon.
Increasing cloudiness ushers in a warmer night across north and central regions. Showers are expected Thursday afternoon followed by a cooler trend.
Peiping is under martial law after two Nanking army planes bombed Peiping s business district. No lives were reported lost though panic spread quickly as streets cleared. Chang Hsueh Liang reportedly plans to shift Manchuria s strength to the northern coalition signaling possible new warfare in China.
City Council at Greencastle meeting granted several building permits for small construction and repairs. H Evans allowed to remodel Alamo building and load materials on popular street. W F Lane F C Cox F M Martin and Eugene Hawkins received permits for residences and roof work. Council members discussed water rates with Spider urging action and Havens noting limited council powers on public utility rates.
A car owned by Edith Swift and the White Cleaners Delivery wagon sustained minor damage in a late Tuesday collision at the Vine and Washington streets corner. Nellie Browning rode with Miss Swift. Target drove the delivery truck alone. No injuries reported.
