A satire column by Charles J. Arnold includes a call to vote amid circus chatter and a series of local notes. Weather droughts slash pollen, hay fever forecasts fade, and crops suffer while a rescuer hauls a hitchhiking family to safety near Greencastle Indiana.
The death of George L. Griffen occurred at his home five miles south of Russellville on Saturday at 4 o'clock. He was born near Somerset Kentucky on January 18 1859 and married Angeline Todd in 1879. He is survived by his wife and a son Homer of Greencastle. He belonged to the Christian church and the Knights of Pythias. He had lived in the community twenty five years. Funeral services were at Russellville Christian church Sunday at 5 pm with burial in Hebron cemetery.
Charles Swartz a 71 year old inmate of the Old People's Home in Marion Township was buried this afternoon at Cloverdale after dying in the Home following an extended illness. The body was prepared by the Rector Undertaking establishment. The man had many relatives in Terre Haute.
Charles E. Pearson resigns as head of DePauw University voice department. Dean R. R. G. McCutchan names Mark F. E. Johnson of Rochester to lead the department. Johnson has opera production experience in America and Europe and previously worked with Paramount Art Craft and Eugene Goossens.
Lee Shipman, 39, a colored resident of Terre Haute, jailed Friday for public intoxication, could not pay a $45 city fine and was committed to the Indiana State Farm at Putnamville for 30 days. Sheriff Biteborge and Deputy Bryan took him there. If he cannot pay, an additional 45 days may be added. Everett Sheets, 23, of North Salem, arrested Wednesday for a similar charge, paid $50 and was released after 4 days in Putnam County jail.
A car owned and driven by Mike Toroiras of 142 East Ohio Street Indianapolis overturned east of Bainbridge on Sunday. Four young women were injured. an Abairbridge physician attended the scene and the body was taken to the Franklin Street garage in Greencastle for treatment.
The forecast indicates fair conditions tonight and Wednesday with the North portion seeing a small rise in temperatures.
The Putnam county county meeting of Christian churches will be held next Sunday at the Somerset church north of Greencastle with Jesse M. Bader of the United Christian Missionary Society as chief speaker. All county churches dismiss services and plan large delegations bringing baskets. Events include Bible School at 9:30 and a full afternoon program with music, sermon, and communion.

Washington Indiana council fixes next year’s tax rate at 49 cents per $100 valuation, likely the state’s lowest. The prior rate was $1.12, aided by budget cuts and the city owned electric light and power plant delivering low power costs under public service commission regulation. Electric rates here are notably lower than average.
The Granada theater resumes operation starting September 6 with a single weekly program. Journey's End will open the slate, followed by a season of up to-date Movietone features and Saturday Sunday matinees. The Vancastle will run daily with three changes weekly and a Saturday midnight show.

Professor E R Smith of DePauw University notes today marks the thirty-eighth consecutive day the Mercury has reached 90 or higher. The noon reading climbs past 90 while the government thermometer records a minimum of 44 Monday night. The executive committee of the Woman's Foreign Missionary Society meets Wednesday at 2 20 p m at Mrs R A Ogg's home to finalize financial reports.
Miss Norvetta Greene hosted a bridge gathering at 206 West Washington Street in honor of Miss Sylvian Noe who departs Thursday for Venice Ohio to teach at the high school. Miss Tessie Davis had high score and Miss Frances Kerr low. Noe received the guest prize. Pink and green decor highlighted the refreshments.
The Country Reading club will meet Thursday afternoon at 2. Miss Clara McPherson will host the session and Mrs. Jonathan Huock will have charge of the program.
Jula White of Jefferson Township filed for divorce from Benjamin White, a local farmer. She alleges separation since August 24, 1922, cruel and inhuman treatment, failure to provide, and infidelity. She says he has failed to provide food and clothing and frequently associates with other women, becoming angry and breaking property.
Revival services opened Sunday evening at Big Walnut Church in Washington township with strong attendance and interest. Rev. J. M. Cauldwell of Crawfordsville will deliver the message each evening and Rev. Dewey McPaddan of Spencer will lead the song service.
Claude Dillner 27 was arrested in Elkhorn Wisconsin with 10 year old Betty Jane Foster after they disappeared Saturday from Lawrenceville Indiana. Dillner claimed the girl as kin but confessed identity later. The child was unharmed. Dillner expected to be employed near Whitewater Wisconsin. He vowed extradition to Indiana.

Tom Huestis, Rosmary Case, and local delegates participate in receptions and governors dinner while civic members travel to Cable Tabernacle. Post office moves in Fillmore shift to new building, barber shop replaces former post office.
