Marion Indiana reports the end of the National Guard occupation as troops departed for Camp Knox after funeral services for Abram Smith and Thomas Shipp, two lynching victims. Governor’s secretary L C Chasey confirmed no further disorder and Colonel George H Healy ordered troops home. cost to state estimated at about $5,000.
Beginning September 5 the Monon railroad will offer special low fares to all points on its line for weekend trips. The round trip price will be 75 percent of the one way fare. Tickets are sold on Fridays and Saturdays and valid for return on any Sunday train.
Increasing cloudiness brings showers in the southwest and south central areas. Temperatures not as cool in the east tonight. The forecast calls for showers on Wednesday.
DePauw University prepares for fall term with September 10 registration for new students and September 12 13 for upperclassmen. Rector scholarships reach a record 291, faculty expands with 17 liberal arts and 2 music additions, enrollment expected near 1600. New facilities Asbury Hall and Gobin Hall form quad on West College campus.
The Junior Fair features an industrial tent organized by J. F. Hirt of the Senior Fair Board and James Sutherlin of the Junior Fairy Board. Booths will include Horace Link S. C. Prevo Eitel Floral Browning and Hammond A. J. Duff John Cook Farm Bureau and R. O. Scobee. The tent sits on Washington street between Vine street and College avenue.
The Greencastle school board meeting set for Monday night has been postponed to Wednesday night according to an official morning announcement.
A district Democrats organization meeting for the Fifth district will be at the Deeming Hotel in Terre Haute on Wednesday. About 50 to 60 Putnam County Democrats are expected. C. Gillen, Green Castle attorney, is the Fifth district candidate for Congress. The all day session aims to organize for the fall elections.
DePauw University in Greencastle Indiana announces September football reporting under new head coach Gaumey Neal. With backfield losses and a line rebuilt, captains Blake Van Riper Hogan and Crawley graduated, while lettermen form the nucleus for the Tigers 1990 schedule including Boston and other eastern invaders.
Indianapolis Aug 12 John Hisler 39 is detained as the man who shot Private David Wilson 25 of Company C 11th Infantry Fort Ben Harrison and assaulted Wilson s 16 year old girl companion The pair identified Hister as the gunman who threatened another couple and dragged the girl into bushes Wilson was wounded in the shoulder Hisler denied the charges with $5000 bond set on vagrancy charges pending further investigation
Ralph Bend ing and Kenneth Ker cheval pled guilty to petty larceny for stealing chickens from Hugh Hicks farm east of town on July 15. They were sentenced to one year at the Indiana State Farm Putnamville after prosecutors dropped grand larceny charges.

R. W. Endicott of Princeton, Indiana, began duties as Owen county agricultural agent this morning. He was unanimously elected by the county board of education on August 2. his term runs to August 1. Owen county had been without an agent since Hoover’s term expired last spring.
The fif th annual reunion and picnic will be held at Quincy Thursday this week. The event draws crowds from surrounding counties. A band, colored singers, and speakers are on the program. The Monon railroad will stop its fast trains at Quincy on the day.
Railroad officials monitor a new electric remote control system on Pennsylvania tracks from Limedale tower. Twenty miles east of Greencastle, twelve main and several siding switches are now operated remotely, with towers at Almeda Coatesville Summit integrated.
The Pennsylvania Railroad asked the Indiana Public Services Commission at the State House in Indianapolis to abandon several Indiana stations, including Asherville Knightsville and possibly make Reelsville a nonagency station. It also sought to end the miner’s train run between Harmony and Glenn Ayr mine, a service in operation for many years. Luther Nowell age 250 of East Chicago and Marguerite Black age 18 of Creensdale at home referenced in the note.
The sixty first U S Army Coast Guard Artillery anti aircraft division moves from Camp Knox Kentucky to Port Sheridan arriving in Greencastle to camp for the night. The unit of 88 men 28 motor vehicles and 3 officers will set up near Seymour and Kentland Indiana before continuing to Fort Sheridan. A demonstration of its anti aircraft equipment including four searchlights and 18 inch guns is planned at 7 pm with Capt W P Marquat in charge.
