Marion to Withdraw National Guard After Riot

National guard troops in Marion Indiana were expected to be recalled from Marion late today or tonight after a peaceful weekend indicating the mob spirit had died out. Funerals for Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith were scheduled with military protection. Weaver near Marion was noted as a former Underground Railroad relay point.

Part of Road 43 Open to Traffic Near Linden and Crawfordsville

Nine miles of state road 45 between Linden and South Raub are included in 52 miles of newly paved state highways opened to traffic in the past week. The Crawfordsville to Lafayette section has been finished but sealed until cured, aided by hot weather. Officials say full road completion and opening is expected by fall excepting bridge work and secured right of way. Miss Juanita Stroup of Frankfort visits Miss Angeline Concilla on West Washington Street.

Planes Crash In Midair Killing Two Men In Terre Haute

Terre Haute Ind August 10 two planes collided midair near the city during a race attempt killing Bernard Doc Allen instantly and critically injuring Arthur Foulkes who later died in St Anthony s hospital. Both pilots were rushed to hospital after the collision and crash.

New pavement on state roads opens in Indianapolis region

Indianapolis authorities report 32 miles of new pavement and 4 miles of retread opening this weekend. State highway director John J. Brown notes about 60 miles of detours eliminated, with 18 miles added again by new work, yielding a net 42 miles fewer detours plus the new pavement. Major openings include 6 miles on U S 40 from Indianapolis to Ridgeport and 9 miles on Routes 43 and 1S between Linden and Lafay ette. Detours across Putnam county and surrounding routes summarized in the traffic bulletin for August 9 15.

Flower Show Planned by Russellville Ladies

Russellville Aug 112 After long talks the Home and Garden club will hold a flower show on August 16 despite drought damage. They trim premiums by half offering 50 cent first prizes in dahlia and gladioli categories and 25 cent first prizes for other displays plus bulbs as second prizes.

Couple Wed In Green Castle As Niagara Falls Trip Planned

Miss Worth Hamrick and B Cleve Thomas were married at the bride's mother's home. They planned a honeymoon trip to Niagara Falls. Charles Reetor and Birch Hughes also left for Niagara Falls and New York. Isaac Waggoner, 90, died at his home on West Seminary Street. he owned a Green Castle hardware business.

Indianapolis Youth Killed in Auto Crash

James Waggy, 21, of Indianapolis died after a crash on the National Road near Greencastle. Waggy’s car overturned multiple times in a eastbound collision with Aaron Evans of Greencastle. a third car involved fled westbound and remained unidentified. Blanche Ferrand, a passenger, was briefly injured and fainted. State police investigate. Brazil and Greencastle wreckers cleared the scene.

Mercury Dips After 102 Degree Saturday in County

Greencastle and Patnan county endure one of the driest periods in history as heat peaked at 102 Saturday. A brief wind and light rain cooled the day but did little to aid crops. Temperatures ranged from 49 to 85, with 77 at noon today. Mrs. Webster hosted a family dinner including their son Robert, daughter-in-law Mrs. Oscar Ashley of Russellville.

The Greencastle firm bell, out of repair for years, is being restored with new batteries and will ring when a fire is reported. Workmen spent Monday completing repairs and installing the power system.

Search for man who attacked girl near Pall Creek

Indianapolts August 11 Posses continued to scour near Fort Benjamin Harrison for a roughly dressed man who crept on two couples by Pall Creek Baker's bridge. He shot Private David W Wilton 26 of 11th Infantry and attacked a 16 year old girl companion Wilson was shot in the right shoulder when he leaped at the man as he dragged the girl toward the bushes. The girl was treated at the post hospital and returned home. Private Robert Archibaki and another man in civilian clothes were frightened by the assailant. A beard long black hair and stubby black rimmed fingers described the attacker. A search party found the girl about an hour later with torn clothing and bruises.

Minor crashes reported in Greencastle police notes

Two minor automobile crashes occurred in Greencastle over the weekend, with no serious injuries. Mrs. Alma Bitzer’s car collided at Walnut and Vine with Jacob Binty’s eastbound vehicle, tearing off a running board and damaging the Bitzer car about 8:50 PM Saturday. A second accident at Walnut and College involved a bus track and an unidentified driver. neither vehicle sustained damage.

A Putnam circuit court suit seeks judgment of 900 dollars against Williams Key, a Jackson township farmer, on an unpaid note. Edmundson alleges Key signed a note for 750 dollars on April 28 and it remained due since May 23.

Tragedy at Brazil: four holdups end in fatal shooting

A hold up at the Walter Rawley filling station on the National Road near Brazil left Ray Long 20, a Gerstmeyer high school student of Terre Haute, dead from a shotgun blast. Three other bandits were captured by residents and turned over to Clay county and Brazil police.
