Evansville youth Osborn held on prison escape charge

Gilbert Snider of Indiana State Farm had Elmer Osborn of Evansville placed in the Putnam county jail. Osborn, 20, faces charges related to an escape from the Putnamville institution in an affidavit by Ralph Howard, superintendent. The alleged escape occurred from the Vanderburgh circuit court sentence on April 15 after he's said to have fled from the penal farm. Snider returned him to Evansville authorities.

The Putnam County League of Women Voters will meet Friday August 8 at 9 o clock in the city library. All women in the county are invited.

Ladoga Lineman Fatally Struck by Live Wire at Work

Joseph Soshe aged about 25 was critically injured and later died after contact with a 280 volt electric wire while working atop a 35 foot pole for Ladoga Light Company at Washington and South streets. He was replacing cross arms with three coworkers. his wife and family awaited updates as resuscitation efforts continued. Soshe had recently joined the company from Crawfordsville and previously worked at R R Donnelley & Sons.

Two Cars Damaged in Bloomington Seminary Crash

Two cars were badly damaged but occupants escaped uninjured in a collision at the corner of Bloomington and Seminary streets. Mrs Myrtle Allen and J P Allen Jr owned and drove the vehicles, one northbound on Bloomington and the other eastbound on Seminary. Police Officer George Knauer investigated the scene.

County Agent Returns From Merom 4-H Camp

County Agent Floyd Miller returned today from Merom where he attended the annual 4-H club camp. He said Putnam county boys and girls enjoyed the camp, with Mary Agnes Miller serving as camp nurse. The camp closes Friday morning. He noted likely no return to Merom next year due to near home site preference and 500 registered members overwhelming to manage as a single group.

County Tax Roll Shows 31 Million Dollar Property Value

Putnam county reports total taxable property at 51,669,052 with public utilities owning 10,565,402. Greencastle leads by township with 5,862,382 in value and utilities at 2,499,892 within Greencastle property. The figures come from the County Auditor and local assessors.

Frank Daggy Suffered Stroke Early Today

Frank Daggy a Manhattan resident aged link is reported to have suffered a stroke of apoplexy while picking beans. He was found by family at seven o clock with the entire right side paralyzed. His health has been poor for years and Dr Hutcheson attended him.

Annual New Maysville Picnic Date Set

The twenty fifth annual New Maysville picnic will be held at Summers grove near New Maysville Wednesday and Wednesday night August 20. Congressman Noble J Johnson will be the principal speaker. There will be entertainments and product exhibitions by Greencastle and Putnam county merchants. An airplane will lift skyward for picnickers and stunt fliers will entertain the crowd. Jamestown band plans a concert in the evening.

William Cotton Released on Fine in Assault Case

William Cotton of near Mt Meridian was released from Putnam county jail this morning after paying a $5 fine and $20 in costs in city court. Mayor W L Denman had charged him with assault and battery based on a complaint by Mrs Ruby Baschum. Cotton was arrested at his home by Deputy Sheriff Alvan Bryan following an early morning argument over a pump handle.

Parachute Jump to Broadcast During Cleveland Balloon Race

Cleveland hosts the Gordon Bennett International Balloon Race and Aerial Carnival on August 31 and September 1 with plans for a record breaking parachute jump from a single plane. Army Navy and Marine units, National Guard planes, and famed pilots including Lindbergh may attend.

Light showers Wednesday night eased the county heat wave but did not end the extreme heat. At noon the University observatory in Greencastle logged 98 degrees with 70 degrees the previous night low. rainfall varied, Jefferson township reports heavy downpour aiding crops while northern areas saw little rain.

Man dies after heat and electric shock in Indianapolis

Robert Miller a 49 year old Greencastle native living in Indianapolis died after falling onto a high tension wire while assisting to erect a smoke stack at Banner Tarn dairy. He was taken to City Hospital but died en route to Green Castle for burial. Funeral plans pending.

Supply Not Diminished in Greencastle Water Reserve

Greencastle faces no water shortage despite higher use of about 1.2 million gallons daily. The Water Works Co. dam reservoir shows virtually no loss since the drought began and remains at peak capacity. Increased demand partly stems from supplying Cement Mull at Limedale, while improvements to suction and the main dam help prevent leaks. Youth Dies After Fall From Tree in Crawfordsville

Herman Wilhelm ten-year-old son of Mrs. Wallace Campbell of 315 Grave Avenue died at Culver hospital shortly after 7:20 AM Wednesday from injuries suffered when he fell from a tree Tuesday afternoon. He and his brother were playing in a vacant Wilson Avenue lot near Mrs. Mary Miller's home.
