Charles J. Arnold presents Edison style brainteasers and moral jokes with a desert starvation scenario and a volley of science trivia. The piece blends humor about a doomed expedition with notes on coins, food content, battery history, the Taj Mahal, microbes, alloys, and other scientific curios.
Officials at the Putnamville Penal Farm filed two affidavits against James Friend and Guy Horton for alleged escapes. Escape carries a 1 to 5 year Indiana State Prison term. Friend reportedly fled June 15 after sentencing in Hamilton County Court. Horton allegedly escaped April 14 after Madison County sentencing.
Greencastle and Putnam county Legionnaires prepare for Indiana state post convention in Fort Wayne during the last week of August. Commander Robert Huffman leads the local delegation with Wilbur Donner D A Flack and O L Van Eave as delegates. Kokomo post plans a large contingent honoring state commander Forrest Harness. District leaders back strong post representation with motor trips and weekend entertainment before August 25 to 27 sessions.
At Merome 4-H Club Camp August 4 8 boys and girls from Vigo Parke Vermillion Clay Sullivan and Putnam Counties joined a program showing the common barberry by Stanley Castell U S Department of Agriculture agent. The demo followed a Hanover camp finding an outlaw barberry bush on site and warns the plant spreads the black stem rust to wheat oats barley and rye. Indiana fights barberry eradication with reports from all counties and guidance to report bushes to Wayne E Leer Purdue Lafayette.
Charles Cole filed suit in Putnam circuit court against John C Jaqua seeking 352.25 as a foreclosure of lien for work performed since February 10 at the Greencastle canning plant that shut down in July. He says wages earned total 429 with 79.75 unpaid as plant closed. Laborers, mainly women, gathered at the plant and police intervened after threats of arson.
Fred Gruenholz foreman of the basket factory at State Farm suffered a broken leg in a collision between a state farm truck and a state highway truck on July 26. He was taken from Putnam County hospital to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for possible surgery. The highway driver and the prisoner had minor injuries.
An important meeting of the Fair Board will be held Friday night August 8 at 7 30 in the office of bounty Agent Floyd Miller. Committee members and others interested are urged to attend.
Daniel Kaglin, 22, of near Reelsville, was fined 23.50 by Justice R. E. Newgent in Greencastle for hunting without a license. He was arrested Tuesday noon while hunting in his home area and arraigned after a guilty plea.
Drought and heat loom over the Indiana State Farm at Putnamville with Deer Creek near record lows. Superintendent Ralph Howard orders strict water conservation as a deep power well may supply only drinking water for several weeks. Bring-in of hauled water for laundry and the power plant is planned. officials say there is no need to transfer prisoners yet.
Indianapolis August 6 1900 workers were ordered back to the Beech Grove Big Four railroad shops after two weeks idleness with full operations planned in locomotive and car repair. About 800 Ford assembly plant workers at Detroit will resume duties early next week.
From The Herald files 20 years ago in Greencastle Roxie Webster and Fenton Lawler were married last evening. The Root Glass company planned to build a glass factory at Fern. A $2,000 player piano was installed in the Greek Candy Kitchen by J. H. Hamilton.
A man identified as Harry Cojor, a 40 year old from Warsaw Poland, was sentenced to 80 days at the Putnamville state farm and fined 11 dollars in Greencastle city court for vagrancy. He was arrested by Deputy Sheriff Alva Bryan after residents complained of his presence and disruptive behavior.
Cooler weather touched Green Castle and Putnam County today with 12 40 PM reading of 97 degrees. The region endures drought as no rainfall arrived while forecasts predict a sharp rise above today’s highs tomorrow.

William Cotton about 40 of near Belle Union was fined 20 dollars total in City Court after arraignment in Greencastle on an assault and battery charge filed by Ruby Baschum of near Mt. Meridian. Three witnesses said he struck Mrs Baschum twice following a pump handle dispute at the Basehum residence. Cotton remains jailed until the fine and costs are paid.
The Handy lot in south Greencastle near the Pennsylvania station will host the 61st Coast Artillery detachment for an overnight stop next Tuesday. Mayor Denman Capt McMahon and Harry Allan selected the site for convenient access. The Greencastle Chamber of Commerce organized the encampment to showcase real army life to locals. The camp will start in the afternoon, with three officers and eighty eight men traveling overland from Camp Knox Kentucky to Ft Sheridan.
Roscoe Hurst of the Moonlit Miniature Golf Course has arranged a Thursday evening concert by the Greenonette band at the Golf Course on East Washington Street. The Thursday Court House lawn concerts have been discontinued.
Mr. Holsapple, owner of a barbecue stand on the National road near Shady Lane, was robbed of 390 dollars by four armed men who forced him into a car and drove west to Rocky Cut before dumping him. Authorities searched the area but found no trace of the attackers. The bandits, aged 25 to 35, were unmasked and did not attempt to hide their identities.
A Rotary Club event in Indianapolis featured sky gifts as packages descended by parachute. Miss Anna Marie Bitel and other women watched as Walker Wislow piloted the airplane dropping gifts attached to parachutes from the clubhouse area. Mrs. A R Chenoweth won a gift amid a brisk scramble for packages containing fancy sheets and pillowcases. Other recipients included Mrs. Jacob Bitel and Mrs. Orville Stewart.
Indiana State Tax Board member will hear remonstrance against Cox and others in Greencastle on Wednesday August 14. The session is expected to be in the courthouse library, announced by Putnam County Auditor W. E. Gill.
