A car traveling to the Poland picnic overturned in a ditch on a hill. Miss Gretchen Pickett sustained two deep cuts to her left wrist and was taken to Dr. W R Hutcheson in Greencastle. Driver Mrs Shrover and Mrs George Fox, both from Reelsville, were uninjured.
Cloverdale's independent Cloverdale Grey face Stilsville at Morrison Park on Sunday for the second game of a three game series. Stil lsville won the opener 8 to 6. New pitcher Rawlings has won both of his Ct outings and struck out 16 Hollybrook batters in a 14 to 0 win last Sunday.
Mrs Jessie Gilmore Best 66 wife of Charles R Best of 20 Gillespie Street Greencastle died at home Thursday night after a two year illness of complications Funeral will be held Saturday at 2 pm at the Presbyterian Church Rev H A Sherrill in charge Interment Boone Cemetery Hamrick Station She is survived by her husband two daughters a brother in Oklahoma and a sister in Arkansas who was with her at death.
County Agent Floyd Miller announced preparations for the annual junior county fair to be held August 14 to 16. The program features male quartets from Greencastle and Marion township, 4 H club demonstrations, a style revue, a band concert, and a tug of war with township teams. An important fair board meeting Friday will finalize plans.
The school board name Mrs. John Cherry to a grade teaching post in the upcoming year. Miss Edvis King, DePauw graduate, named supervisor of art to replace Ruth Owens. Mary Reese from Kempton chosen to lead high school Latin. C B Edmonson of Clayton selected as vocational agriculture teacher succeeding Martin Bassett. Edmonson brings Purdue training and government agriculture experience.
Emma Benee Houck age 66 widow of William Houck died at 11 30 this morning at 733 East Washington street after a four year illness. Funeral will be Sunday at 2 30 at the residence with Boone cemetery interment. A daughter Mrs Ethel Houck Kinder of New Smyrna Florida survives along with her husband. Houck was a longtime county resident active in the Methodist church Woman's Bible club D A R and Twentieth Century Club.
Mostly fair tonight and Saturday with local thundershowers this afternoon and tonight in the north. Temperatures cooler in the extreme north tonight and Saturday north portion.
Dr A E Ayler celebrates thirty-one years of medical service in Greencastle since arriving from Washington DC in 1899. He recalls the rainy arrival with his wife Mrs Ayler and early years, first patients, modest earnings, and later moving to the current home and office on Vine and Poplar streets.
Putnam county 4-H members who attended the Merom camp returned home today after a weeklong session. About seventy club members and leaders from the county took county school trucks to the event which drew about 500 participants from six counties. The camp featured instruction plus entertainment and recreation.
Professor E R Smith reports Greencastle and Putnam County endured one of the five hottest summers in 60 years. Through June to July there were 24 days of 90plus and 11 days above 100, with a peak 106 on July 28. Rainfall minimal, with a .04 inch fall last night.

Advance agents of Barnett Brothers Circus announced two performances in Greencastle on Thursday August 28. The traveling show arrives by motor truck and will move to the town from Sullivan via west Walnut Street.
Four year old Thomas Franklin Dowell died at his home north of Crawfordsville after eating green apples. The physician attributed the death to cholera infantum caused by the fruit and a resulting toxic condition. The event occurred Thursday night at 10:45 o'clock to the parents Mr and Mrs George Rowell.
Mrs Oza Brown of 640 East Walnut Street files for divorce in Putnam Circuit Court citing cruel and inhuman treatment after 1906 marriage. Amos Brown employed by the University. Three children ages 17 19 and 9. Attorneys James and Alles.
Elmer Osborne twenty is of Evansville Indiana was sentenced in Putnam circuit court by Judge James P Highest to the Indiana State Reformatory for a period of one to five years on a charge of escape. Osborne, who escaped from the Potnamville institution on April 15, was captured recently by Evansville authorities. Greeneastie Indiana State Farm officer Gilbert Snider traveled to Evansville to return the prisoner. Sheriff Edward Eiteljorge will take the prisoner to Pendleton Institution Saturday to begin serving the sentence.
In Putnam circuit court Judge James P. Hughes extended the hearing on the receivership of Greencastle Canning Co. until Tuesday at 2 PM. John 4 Jaqua seeks solvency for the plant while Citizens Trust Co. and First National Bank pursue a receiver to maintain operations. The suit cites bankruptcy and unpaid operating costs amid past employee demonstrations and stored seasonal pack valued near $12 000 with 75 percent loaned against it.
A 10 000 strong mob stormed Marion jail after Claude Deeter's death and an attack on Mary Ball. Sheriff Campbell dispersed the crowd at 5 am. Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith were lynched, while Herbert Cameron and Robert Sullivan were hidden in Huntington. Riot squads and state police contained the scene. Ball’s father was beaten while pleading for calm.
Sheriff smuggled two prisoners from Huntington jail to Indiana State Reformatory at Pendleton amid fears of a lynching. Prisoners Herbert Cameron 16 and Robert Sullivan 18 were moved with armed deputies to Pendleton for safekeeping.
