Charles J. Arnold notes hot weather and drought in Putnam County with crops suffering and lawns turning gray. He urges rain, praises Boy Scout leaders, and promotes the Putnam County Junior Fair set for August 14 to 16, urging citizen support.
Funeral services for Mrs Blanche Goodwine O H Air die in her home on east Washington street will be this evening at 7:50 at the residence with Dr Salem B Town in charge. The funeral party will leave Sunday morning at 8 o clock for West Lebanon where interment will take place. Glen Goodwine of Usbana Tlinois grandson of Mrs O Mair arrived today for the funeral. Her son Ernest Goodwine of Reno Okla will be unable to come to Greencastle
Three Crawfordsville youths aged 18 and 18 suffered hand and head injuries when their Rick sedan left the road and hit a tree near Greencastle. Drivers Middleton and Cornett plus Geneva Huntin were treated, not believed serious. The Middleton Buick was damaged. In Bluffton, ten year old Glenford Rexford Oswalt died from complications after a spider bite.
About thirty five Greencastle Rotary members and families travel to Speedway Park Indianapolis for a Fifth District Rotary outing hosted by the Indianapolis club. The day features golfing croquet horseshoes amateur auto races airplane stunts parachute jumping a children's entertainer a women’s bridge party prizes a magician a sight seeing trip and a buffet lunch with a 6 40 pm dinner to follow. The Fifth District includes Terre Haute Crawfordsville Lafayette Lebanon Frankfort Sheridan Indianapolis and Greencastle.
The Kappa Alpha Theta sorority will construct a $75,000 house on Forest Place, tearing down the current Theta home. The alumni council announced the new mansion will replace the old structure, with construction not likely to begin until next spring or summer, and members to remain in the present house for another school year.
Mrs Walter Johnson wife of the Washington baseball club manager died at 430 am Friday at Georgetown University hospital Ter hus band was at the bedside having refused to accompany his team to New York last night She entered the hospital Wednesday midnight after collapsing from heat exhaustion and had just returned Monday from a motor trip to Coffeyville Kansas where she visited relatives Doctors attributed the heat and strain from the long tour as the cause of her collapse
Indianapolis August 2. Butler University's suspension by the North Central Association is reported to bring George Patsy Chirk from athletics and Harry M Bell of Lombard College to succeed as athletic director. Salaries for coaches may be cut and Clark’s three year contract adjusted as Butler faces budget pressures. Bell, a Drake graduate, has produced winning teams at Lombard and was once considered as Page’s successor.
Mrs Emma Elizabeth Betty Browning 64 longtime Putnam County resident died suddenly at her Greencastle home 719 East Washington Street after heart disease. Funeral Sunday 2 30 PM Methodist Church with Dr KB Bartlett officiating. Interment Forest Hill Cemetery. She is survived by two children Nellie Browning and George Browning. step son Lawrence Browning. brothers G H Hillis and William Hillis.
Mr and Mrs Oscar OHair and Mr and Mrs Verner Hough left this morning for Chicago to join the Farmers Guide tour to Denver Salt Lake City Yellowstone Park and other points of interest in the West They will be gone about two weeks.
Roosevelt Longsworth to serve as political adviser to Mrs. Ruth Hanna McCormick in the upcoming fall campaign. Longsworth will be in Illinois for the election fight where McCormick faces Hamilton Lewis, a Democratic aspirant.
Chinese rebels press toward Shanghai Hankow Kiukiang and Kuling after overrunning Changsha in Honan. Government garrisons strengthen barriers as frightened residents flee toward foreign concessions. British cruiser Cumberland assists at Hankow amid evacuations.
Invitations issued for the marriage of Miss Elsie Denton and David Davis set for August 9. Clara Hodshire takes a teaching post in Oakesdale Washington. Margaret Jordan leaves First Ward school to teach in Seattle Washington.
Elvin Harlin elected president as the Greencastle school board reorganizes and Dr C B O’Brien becomes treasurer. The Greencastle public library board also reorganizes with Harlin as president and O’Brien as treasurer. Democrats gain control of both boards for the first time in years amid several teacher vacancies to fill.
Alexander Legge, Federal farm board chairman, urged reducing wheat acreage by 25 percent to double wheat aid prices at a six state conference in Indianapolis. The meeting at the Claypool Hotel barred more than 100 prominent farmers and dealers, creating ill will. Participants included Indiana Illinois Ohio Michigan Missouri and Wisconsin attendees. Legge and Purdue’s Dean Skinner pressed wheat feeding.
Gary Indiana August 2 miniature golf replaces drama and motion pictures at the Orphen Theater. The interior is rebuilt at cost of 10000 dollars and two miniature golf courses were added while all seats and stove equipment were removed. Owner Vou Young says the course will serve fans unable to play on outdoor courses this winter.
Washington reports Henry Jonvrin Browne, a long range forecaster, says the current heat break is temporary and the wave will not end until after Labor Day. He links heat to sun spot and lunar cycles, noting 16 year heat patterns and similar events in 1874 and other years.
County nurse Mary Agnes Miller reports July activities visiting seventy seven patients in Greencastle and Putnam Co. Fifty five tuberculin sufferers were treated during July. Other calls addressed various diseases and sixteen patients attended the tuberculosis clinic at the County Hospital. Weather mostly fair tonight and Sunday with warmer conditions in the extreme south.
Jack Zuta, key head of the Aiello Moran vice ring, was killed in the Lakeview Hotel dance hall in Chicago. Seven gunmen in two cars fired at close range as patrons watched, ending Zuta’s escape after a long run of threats and inquiries into Lingle’s murder.
Brazil, Inc. August 1. John Cronak 18 Seelyville was shot in the eye near Bowling Green while seated with a companion. The blast destroyed the eye and pierced the temple, ear, and skull area. He was taken to Clay County Hospital where the eyeball was removed. No shooter identified.
