Greencastle lumberman Charles H. Barnaby, longtime speed enthusiast, has acquired a racing stable and entered the thoroughbred game. News from his Lake Maxinkuckee retreat cites a turtle racing club sweepstakes win as part of his racing interest.
The forecast calls for light local showers mainly tonight or Tuesday with generally fair conditions in the southern extreme. Cooler air moves in northward tonight and across the north and central portions Tuesday.
Greencastle volunteers fought multiple grass fires on Saturday and Sunday including a wood shed and barn blazes. A Sunday afternoon inferno on a West Hanna street property threatened a house for over an hour before being controlled. Mayor Denman urged residents to burn trash only after the dry spell and smokers to extinguish cigarettes to avoid new fires.
The city fire department responded to a grass fire in the pasture behind the Alfred Hirt residence on west Walnut street. The blaze covered more than an acre before volunteers controlled it, stopping before reaching buildings. Mr and Mrs Simpson Hirt occupy the old home place.
The Greencastle Merchants Boosters were routed 15 to 2 by Paris Illinois Independent at Terre Haute in a ragged contest. The Greencastle club fell well short of the mark as Paris Illinois dominated throughout.
Mrs Anna Debolt aged 62 died at 12:20 PM today in the Greencastle home of her daughter Mrs Elmer VanCleave 610 College Avenue after a several months illness. Born in Memphis she lived much of her life in Indianapolis and Franklin and belonged to the Baptist church of Franklin. Survived by two sons William Indianapolis and Edward Ben Davis besides the daughter. Funeral arrangements not yet made.
Indiana reporters describe near record temperatures with 7 am readings matching a prior 101 degree peak. Focus shifts to southern areas where a 110 degree forecast looms, while drought and fires threaten Knox and surrounding counties.
Indianapolis August 4 A spindle failure sent a speeding car over on the Walnut Gardens half mile track fatally injuring Homer Duesing 22 a Union Garage driver. He died within minutes and was pinned beneath the car. Two other drivers escaped injury. Duesing’s death follows another track fatality three days earlier.
An Indianapolis man, Arthur Wabnitz, drove south on State Road 4 when stray gravel caused his car to hit a sharp curve and skid into a ditch, turning over twice. He and two fellow occupants were uninjured as the wreck was towed to Greencastle for repairs.
The Greencastle commissioners awarded a coal delivery contract at 2.60 dollars per ton. Prof. and Mrs. R. A. Ogg moved from Kokomo to Indianapolis to join the State Sunday School Association. Post office excavation lines laid and work to start tomorrow. Ora and Everett O’Hair departed for a southwest trip.
London dispatches report a terrible earthquake in Russian Turkestan killing about 500 people and injuring 4000. The shock devastated Vritzky and Tehipaevo near the Caspian Sea, with damaged communications and government relief teams dispatched to assess the damage.
More than 70 Putnam county 1-H club members and leaders left for the annual 4-H camp at Merom. The session runs until Friday with 500 attendees from six counties as announced by County Agent Floyd Miller. The group traveled by school and large trucks from various county areas and will follow a dense activity schedule including crafts, classes, swimming, and campfire services.
Two massive typhoons struck Central Japan causing at least fifty deaths and widespread destruction. Osaka was flooded with 10,000 houses reported underwater and 300 buildings standing in damage, while Tokyo endured heavy inundation. The storms come weeks after earlier devastation in southern Japan.
A detachment of the 1st Coast Artillery regiments will overnight in Greencastle under the Chamber of Commerce sponsorship. The camp will showcase equipment and army life with officers Capt. B B McMahon and Major W L Denman arranging details. Roy Kilman and Margaret Wright addressed local homes.
