Charles J. Arnold notes a prediction that it will rain on Thursday August 14 the day of the Quincy Picnic. He recalls past heat in Needles California and Greencastle Indiana in 1892, and muses that rain would improve the weather while recalling local memories and a new radio song.
Rev B H Bruner of First Christian Greencastle will speak at a Madison Indiana centenary service honoring Manning Christian church founders. Bruner and family depart Saturday for a stop in New Albany before attending in Madison and returning Sunday evening.
More than 70 Putnam County boys and girls will attend the Merom camp from August 4 to 5 with Floyd tier announcing 21 names already placed on the list. Transportation will use school and large trucks with pickups arranged for east north and south routes meeting at the county courthouse lawn Monday at 8 30 AM.
Regular monthly services announced for Hamrick Station Church with Sunday night worship at 7:99 o clock led by Mrs Grace Pollum. Parishioners are invited to attend and participate in singing and prayer.
Two cars sustained only minor damage after a Thursday evening crash at the Hanna and Indiana streets corner. Teress Detrick and Lawrence Clark were the drivers, with Lloyd Beers owning Clark’s car. No injuries or arrests. both drivers will handle repairs.
George Finley a Brazil physician filed a motion for a new trial after a Putnam circuit court decision. A judgement favored Alexander Morris of Brazil over Finley in a case arising from an accident while Morris was employed to cut weeds, causing a badly cut hand. Finley lists twelve reasons for the new trial.
Representatives of Putnam county Christian churches plan a county meeting on August 31 at Summerset Church north of Greencastle. All congregations will dismiss to attend a union Bible school at the Bible school hour with classes taught by assigned teachers. A morning service with a special speaker and a basket dinner precede an afternoon service. Fred Belles of Russellville presides over the county organization.
The forecast calls for mostly fair skies with a rise in temperatures tonight and into Saturday. Patchy warmth develops as high pressure dominates, bringing light winds and dry conditions across the region.
In Hammond Indiana Marion Turner 29 of Dayton Ohio was killed by railway detective EF A Russell. Russellville Indiana resident Wray Tarner 239 was critically wounded. Russell says he ordered both to surrender. Marion drew a revolver and opened fire wounding Russell then he fired back killing Turner and wounding Marion’s brother.
Mrs Alice Corbin Sies president of Teachers College Indianapolis has accepted appointment as director of extension for the New Jersey department of teacher training at Glassboro Norman School Glassboro New Jersey She has led the college for three years and will close her administration this term The college will unite with Butler University in September with Dr William R Richardson head of education at Butler becoming head of Teachers College
Clarence King and Noah Gerner fled after being caught burglarizing the Diamond filling station in Brazil early Wednesday. They abandoned their car and King's wife and two year old baby and are believed hiding in a large woods south of Reelsville wearing striped overalls. Witnesses saw them and police report items from the car include silk underwear and scarves suggesting other burglaries. Mrs King and baby are held at the Clay County jail under Sheriff and Mrs Tiffee.
The body of Mrs Aubrey Vanhook aged about 20 will be brought from Detroit to be laid in Brick Chapel for funeral services at 2 p.m. Saturday. The husband Aubrey Vanhook is the son of Mr and Mrs James Vanhook of Portland Mills. Ruth Quebbeman of DePauw registrar's office leaves for Indianapolis for a month.
A Farm Bureau meeting is scheduled in the Roachdale library basement on Monday August 4 at 7 p.m. A good speaker will discuss the organization's countrywide work and goals. All are invited, with a special invitation to ladies.
Five men from Munete are held in Greenville Ohio and Danville Indiana on robbery and auto theft charges. They allegedly confessed to nine burglaries in north Putnam County on July 17, with loot recovered at Munice. Detectives Bryan and Snider linked the crimes to a Munete gang operating with local shopkeepers.
At a Putnam County Fair Board meeting the industrial display was planned to be larger than ever with a bigger catalog and improved paper quality. Entertainment added includes tug of war for men, girllets and readings, stunt acts, a concert, and a township team elimination tournament with ten-picked players.
Twenty years ago in Greencastle reports estimate about 5000 people attended the Cloverdale ple event. Miss Ethel McCloud is named supervisor of music in Martinsville schools for the fall. L H Athey, county recorder, travels to Indianapolis with bound record books. An addition is under construction at the Interurban freight station to ease heavy freight traffic.
A flock of 100 chickens owned by J Dozier was stolen from the Raymond Crosby farm near Roachdale last night. Sheriff Edward Eitelforge Deputy Alva Bryan and Detective Harry Snider investigated at dawn following reports of the incident.
Harley James reports a 1926 Ford touring car stolen during the night. He cannot provide the license or engine numbers. Evangelist J L Davis from near Reelaville leaves today for a two month preaching trip through Kentucky.
Rev Edwin Tomlinson of Cloverdale will speak at 7:30 PM Sunday at the First Baptist church Greencastle union service. He is a Vernon university junior next year and has preached in Cloverdale for months and was ordained last Sunday. His topic will be Worth While Religion.
Mrs Blanche O Hair Farly died at home on East Washington Street at 2 80 this morning after a three week illness. The 78 year old Greencastle resident is survived by four sons and a sister. Funeral services will be held at the home Saturday evening with Dr Salem Town in charge and burial in West Lebanon beside her first husband.
Three young men attempted to enter the Studio Ten Stop tea room in the Alamo Building at about 9 o clock Thursday night owner Mrs Andersen reported. They tried to force a locked screen and gain entry from the back while a kitchen employee heard them. The arrival of another woman frightened the would be burglars and they fled before entering. No police notice was given.
Reporting from Washington the United States plans to present the Chinese Nationalist government with a bill for repayment of all property losses in Changsha. Estimated damage exceeds 2.5 million dollars, with Standard Oil property and many homes burned as Communists held the city. American personnel, including Allen Cameron and Lawrence Kunmsas, are believed captured. two German engineers may be in Changsha. Navy reports 35 warships in Chinese waters with more in Manila ready if needed. Public utilities largely continue but interior river routes remain limited.
Washington report shows the farmer's dollar has slipped to a new low in July with wheat and cotton prices below pre war levels. Despite easing general commodity prices, farm purchasing power has decreased as drought hits. Experts cite slumping farm prices and note possible movement toward higher prices later, with page 2 follow up.
