Through the Cascade Range to Puget Sound by Stampede Route
An August account from New Tacoma describes travel from Ellensburg toward Stampede Pass, detailing mules and a white mule named Tony, Yakima River scenery, Indian salmon fishing practices, local campsites, and the Northern Pacific railroad’s planned Cascade division with tunnels and grades toward Puget Sound. The narrator notes landmarks such as McGinnis’s, Green River, Sulphur Springs, and Uncle Bennie’s springs, plus an overview of the Natchees Snoqualmie and Stampede passes and the route to New Tacoma Seattle and Puget Sound.
