Vermont results show a split election with no winning governor candidate. Republicans hold a likely legislature choosing governor as returns from early towns favor Democrats and progressives, widening the gap over prohibitive and socialist rivals. The legislature will select the governor in early September.
In Jersey on September 4 W Dod and A Wrightmire two premier members of the Kersey Club opened a contest for new jerseys to recruit business men. Dod won by 12, securing Wrights guests at a banquet to be held at Mr A hall next Monday. The losing side led by Wally plans to present a brief speech detailing how they defeated Wright.
In Morgan on September 10 to 18 the Morg anity Fair association promotes a wide program featuring Aviator Cooper with a Curtiss line, bucking contests, agricultural exhibits, and other county attractions. Ethel Shattuck departed Monday from a Colorado visit, accompanied by her uncle J N Thatcher to Denver.
In Kersey on September 4 a Baptist church society was organized with 14 charter members. Rev. Blinzinger, a Baptist missionary, has been active locally and identified 20 nearby families without church access. Services will be held at Woodmen hall, with deacons Mr. Racer and Mr. Baker. Mrs. James James named Sunday school superintendent.
Word from Denver says a man thought to be one of the robbers who hit the Windsor hardware store last week was arrested by Denver police. He gave the name Frank Lopez of Pueblo. Sheriff McAfee will bring him to Weld County this afternoon. Police believe other conspirators assisted in the August 20 theft of cash and goods worth about 750 dollars.
Evans September 4 The board of education met to consider retaining a two year high school program despite previously deciding against high school this year. After reviewing applications from several pupils, the board restored ninth and tenth grades with principals and instructors named from Loveland Denver Greeley and others. Attendance dropped from last term. only one building used with ample room.
The Tribune urges newsboys to attend the Sells Floto circus with free admission. Readers are told to spread the word, gather in groups, and remember the date while managers arrange seats at no cost. The plan promises top views in the amphitheater and easy entry for all who participate.
Secretary Kinsella announces the upcoming county fair at Island Grove park from September 29 to 27. New comfort stations water features and shaded lawns will aid picnic parties making reunions easier while open air amusements like balloon ascensions and races add to a daylong visit for county residents and city dwellers alike.
Greeley residents plan a large Weld County turnout at the Larimer county fair in Loveland next week. Businessmen will travel by car caravan with 100 banners to advertise Greeley’s attendance and Weld County’s own fair set for late September. Secretary Kinsella coordinates the event and invites participants to inform him.
Weld county will have the most aristocratic rural delivery in Colorado as rural carriers push efficiency on three of five Greeley post office routes. Automobiles cover a fourth route, with a fifth to join soon. one auto carrier completes an 80 mile two hour trip delivering mail to hundreds of farmers, leaving about 11 and returning just after 1. The effort shows a bold move toward faster rural mail service.
The body of William Hammontry, 11, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hammontry, was found in a field northeast of here. He died from severe head wounds and multiple injuries after an accident with a rake. Coroner Macy investigated. authorities believe the boy fell and was harmed by the rake teeth. Funeral services were held at the Catholic church in Greeley.
Kersey September 4 voters defeated a 15000 bond proposal for a water works system by 2 to 21 after a lively day of votes and controversy. Dry advocates reportedly crowded the polls late, curbing the water supporters' final push.
Fred Allen, foreman of the C. H. Reed farm six miles south of LaSalle, unloads a large oil burner threshing and plowing machine. It can pull the plow over 20 acres a day, enabling 1,000 acres of fall wheat and threshing for neighbors. Reed owns ranch and runs a butter and commission business in Denver.
The campaign of Governor Woodrow Wilson for president is funded by popular subscription. Democrats in Weld County may contribute to the national campaign fund, with deposits sent to the National headquarters via The First National Bank of Greeley, which has agreed to collect and forward them. B. L. Jefferson, Rocky Mountain Wilson club treasurer from Denver, will also receive contributions.
The third district Sabbath school missionary rally in this city drew between 500 and 850 attendees from Barnesville Galeton Kersey Bethel and S W schools. People arrived in morning stayed all day and joined three sessions morning afternoon and evening. A basket dinner was served at noon and another at suppertime with many Greeley residents present. The Gill Mercantile hall hosted the event as the best venue available to handle the crowd.
Grover September 4 Tomorrow promises a large Farmers Day crowd at county celebration with athletic events and exhibits. Free lunch music by Buckingham band and garden exhibits with large cash prizes. Agricultural college speakers will provide verbal contests. Races include motorcycle trot bicycle pacing farmers running and wagon hitch events.
A representative of the C H Canning factory of Denver is in Platteville to prepare for opening the local canning plant within days. Farmers have already brought crates for tomatoes, signaling an imminent start. The plant will provide a local market for tomatoes, paying about 50 cents per 160 pounds, with annual purchases around 15,000 to 20,000 dollars and employment for 20 to 40 workers. The Platteville tomato crop is smaller and later than hoped this year.
Eaton reporter notes J. J. Ward, one of Eaton's oldest settlers, is dangerously ill at home. He has suffered several strokes. age near 80 renders him practically helpless though he can move his arms. He cannot speak and his condition is described as very grave.
The city physician reported low disease counts for last month with four typhoid cases, three whooping cough, and one measles as the water supply improvements show progress. Sidewalk construction on Tenth Street was approved, an Island Grove exhibition auto polo game was rejected, and county use of the south side hose house for elections was granted. Reservoir bids were postponed, and V Phenix was authorized to pursue a city pauper graves claim against the county, with a $500 estimated debt and $3 per grave perpetual care levy.
A large boulder was moved to the Greeley birthplace in Amherst to hold a bronze memorial tablet funded by the New Hampshire legislature. The marker honors Horace Greeley, whose early home had no distinguishing mark for about 75 years. The dedication will be organized by the New Hampshire Publishers' association at a forthcoming outing.
A strict potato quarantine aims to keep wart disease from spreading. Colorado potato expert Eugene Grubb championed the law, as the wart disease, recently introduced from Newfoundland and other nations, threatens U.S. potato yield and palatability.
J B Lycan, aged 20 months, son of Mr and Mrs A A Lycan, died Sunday morning at 10 oclock in Platteville after a bout of cholera infantum that began August 14. He was buried Monday and funeral services were held at the M E church at 10 oclock. The child grew ill, briefly improved, then sank into a stupor and never recovered.
