Lightning Strikes St John Roman Church Damaging Steeple
A August 22 storm struck St John Roman Catholic on Dryades Street in New Orleans. The lightning struck the steeple top, snapped the rod, stopped the clock, and damaged the cornice and organ area with bricks and moldings torn away. Organist Prof Blake escaped injury as the organ suffered about 1000 dollars in damage.

The body of Swan Neilson, mail carrier lost December 22, 1883 during a severe snow storm, was found near the Ophir range after nearly two years buried under snow. He died instantaneously in the slide, preserved in a natural pose, and the remains were taken to Ophir.
