City officials authorize the railroad to relocate its tracks and operate through downtown, citing safety measures and traffic plans. Stakeholders express concern about disruption and the potential impact on local businesses during the transition.
The council authorized relocation of the railroad freight at 12th street to improve sightlines for engineers. It approved a special Friday session to review bids for a new filter bed at the water works, expecting over a dozen bids. C Williams named city weigher and H Guy Wood sought a fire department sleeper position. A new police alarm box with city hall link was approved at Eighth Street and Avenue. Parking near Lincoln Park was allowed, a hose tester was authorized for the fire department, and two west city bridges will receive railings.
Mrs. T. R. Hadley entertained fifteen friends Tuesday evening at her home. The gathering was inspired by Mrs Edith Granger Harte visiting from the Philippines and she shared experiences there. Dainty refreshments were served by Mrs Hadley.
Fourteen auto loads of Weld county business men left Greeley at 7 am heading northeast on a long one day tour planned to cover 156 miles through the eastern part of Weld county with multiple stops for introductions. S. M. Edgell led the pilot car carrying President St. John of the Weld county Commercial club and I. Roths child of the Greeley Commercial club. The group included representatives from The Tribune and Republican and other local interests. A basket lunch was carried for the journey and some cars may join from other towns. The party's fate was uncertain after 10:15 am until the first car could reach a city later that night.
Miss Ethel Briggs and Carl Gooch wed at the Briggs home in La Salle at 2 PM in a pink and white ceremony. Rev Crooks of Evans officiated as relatives witnessed the vows. The couple left in a trim auto for a southern state honeymoon after a three course luncheon.
About 300 congregants attend a pantomimed chronicle of Rev Doane’s pastorate at his farewell in the church. A biography in verse by W. Wilson frames the sketches of church life and plans, with D. D. Forward and others offering remarks before Doane departs for San Diego with his ailing wife.
Mrs. W R Dedrick spoke at the Commercial club ladies night, praising the M C and Child Welfare efforts. She highlighted the parent teacher circle concept and the joint role of home, church, and state in child training and community improvement.
The Great Western Sugar Co will supply beet seed free of charge to farmers for tracts damaged by recent cold and high winds. Requests must include a field man’s statement that the land was formerly planted and seed loss or destruction due to frost or wind. Several growers reported frost and wind damage to beets.
The Farmers Union branch has bought bran and Paris green for grasshoppers or potato bugs and seeks bids on twine and sacks. The first hoppers of the season are reported near Pierce and an effort will be made to eradicate them before crops suffer damage.
Pierce May 24 farmers cut wires to create a crossing one mile south after Union Pacific ignored petitions. A new road on both sides of the tracks cuts haul by farmers, but cattle now cross the right of way raising fears of stock deaths without preventive measures.
A May 24 report from U S Postal authorities notes a district wide rural route is likely to be established within weeks. It would cover about a mile south and west of Pierce and part of Olive Branch country in the dry farming area. The Ault route may be rearranged to include new territory. The Nunn district also seeks a route.
The English fete day and May day festival will be celebrated Friday beginning at 9 o clock by the children of the Normal training school on the campus. Friday afternoon, June 2, will be devoted to a field meet in which every class in the training school will participate, the classes against each other and the girls against the boys.
Roy Toliver returned to Greeley after a Nebraska trip where he wrestled five matches, winning four. He faces George Gion, Nebraska middleweight champion, this evening in a bout expected to draw strong local interest with preliminaries in wrestling and boxing.
Miss Edith Harris departed today for Manhattan Kansas to spend the summer, leaving her home in care. She is expected to return in the fall.
A Greeley company formed by W. B. Patterson J. R. Wortham C. C. Washington and R. G. McDonald will market Kilinsex a paste pesticide made from arseniate of lead. The plant on the alley between eighth and Ninth avenues and Ninth and Tenth streets will produce 1900 pounds daily with a goal of 30 000 pounds in orders already placed. The formula promises lower cost and a protective film that resists washout unlike Paris green.
The People vs James W Lee began in district court with Judge Graham presiding over allegations of kidnapping his three year old daughter. Since the Judge granted Mrs Lee custody after divorce, Lee reportedly took the child on a nationwide trip before capture in southern Texas. He then sued for a modification of the decree but lost, with custody remaining with Mrs Lee. Lee later sued the Trumbulls for damages totaling $48000.
Officers of the baseball company select a new team name Spuds amid branding changes. The decision reshapes public identity and signals organizational renewal.
Greeley Baseball company held a meeting on Tuesday electing officers and planning exhibitions of the national game. The new Greeley team will be named The Spuds with uniforms bearing a G and a large spud. A game is slated against Simpson Seed company of Denver, with a double header on Decoration Day against Denver University to inaugurate the season. E H MecClanahan was elected president, R E Winbourn VP, I Oppenheimer secretary and treasurer, Roy Collins manager. Stock certificates will be issued soon. A crack pitcher from the Cheyenne Indians has joined and others are negotiating, with select players unavailable until after June 1. No game next Saturday due to limited practice time. Team is hoped ready by Sunday for early season action.
LaSalle reports completion of inlet and outlet construction and the start of concrete work on the Latham Reservoir. The project advances toward completion with focus now on the reservoir shell and supporting structures.
The Hudson Land and Investment company filed incorporation papers with the county clerk. It is capitalized at $20,000 with its principal office in Hudson. The incorporators are F. A. Hensley, J. J. Ledgerwood and Stella M. Ledgerwood.
Reverend A. C. Leafgren traveled to Denver this morning and will stay over Sunday according to church notices.
Colorado and Wyoming show record increases in alcohol purchases with beer receipts approaching $500,000 and total liquor receipts near $1,004,000. The rise comes despite few distilleries, as Wyoming remains a light spirit state. Tobacco and cigars fall slightly while beer gains dominate.
Commencement festivities begin with a junior seniors reception in Camfield hall. Rev R J Hunter preaches the class sermon at the Presbyterian church. Class day exercises on May 31 in the high school auditorium. Graduation exercises Friday at the Congregational church. Prof Potter of Pueblo to give the commencement address. There are 39 graduates this year.
Mrs. Ida Nystrom returned to her Denver home Tuesday following a visit with Mrs. C. A. Carlson.
