Break in Clayton Dyke Triggers Emergency Water Channel Work

About twenty five men worked since Tuesday to repair the Clayton farm dyke north of town after a break near Ninth avenue. The washout flooded twenty acres of beets peas and trees were felled and earth filled into the gap with sacks but the six foot deep breach resisted. A fallen tree diverted water into the old channel raising it by a foot though repairs show channel widening and diking can carry larger floods than current. The plan to let flood waters cut the channel was deemed costlier than hand digging for this emergency.
