Nine men die in a pitched battle between Texas horse buyers and a band of desperadoes near Afton thirty five miles west of Fortun. A survivor hid to feign death as raiders opened fire and fled leaving wrecked camp and casualties.
Lambrecht a veteran Port Lupton resident of 40 years, aged 71, was seriously injured in a railroad accident at Platte Canyon Sunday. He has grown grandchildren and spends summers with daughter Mrs Willie Mo at Baileys. His two sons live nearby and await word. He took part in many engagements with Indians and recalls days in the mud that is now ruins north Lupton.
In Ensa s City Missouri on July 12 a bomb exploded during a St John’s Day celebration at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Three people died instantly including Antonio Gras To who supervised fireworks and two bystanders a colored man and a woman. Jassiffe built the bomb but failed to observe necessary cautions.
Denver diary reports Fiipino medical student Laszerio- Sadi tried to end his life by ingesting nitric acid on Sunday afternoon after a dispute over an engagement with Miss Mlanche Shisuler who denied the relationship and criticized him. He died this morning.
In Sioux City Iowa the Perry Creek flood drove about a thousand residents from their homes early today. The surge submerged a densely populated district and halted all traffic. Leo Bethschaider an express runner drowned, the only reported death.
Denver report says Ben Romero fell fifteen feet from a slipping scaffold while cleaning a metal ceiling at the Elite cafe on Stout Street. He died an hour later from a skull fracture and brain injuries.
The river cutting a new channel from Island Grove park to the Union Pacific track has proven the spring plan by W L Clayton successful. The flood deepened the cut to six feet with a 150 foot width, lowering the channel two feet and reducing flood risk by dyking the old routes at both loops.
Union Pacific brings Denver grading outfit to Greeley to lay three quarters of a mile of Sixth Avenue before fall shipments. Camps set near gas works for thirty days with tents and machinery, hired teams from Denver. Bridge builders face Lone Tree pile driving delays. aim to finish Lone Tree bridge and reach that point by Saturday.

Since January there have been fifteen grading camps in the district, yet no shootings, stabbings, or fist fights, a first for railroad camps.
Acting mayor Hays issues a permit for the Reiss carnival to perform the week beginning July 19. The advance agent claims the show is clean and moral and will employ about 250 people who must find boarding houses since no sleeping or cook tents are used. Local Fagles oversight will receive a percentage of gross proceeds.
Mrs J E Neill and Miss Edith Kurts hosted a charming Saturday reception honoring Professor and Mrs C W Kurtz of Cleveland. About forty guests attended including W T A members and Miss Kurtz’s friends. Refreshments were served by Miss Kurtz with assistance from Miss Jessie Lace and Miss Ethel Patterson.

Larson, a rancher near Eaton, swallowed bichloride tablets thinking they were harmless headache powder. He lay near death until a physician revived him. Friends deny suicide, calling the act accidental and grateful for the doctor’s saving intervention.
P W Hughes of Loveland has rented part of the old Morrison Building in LaSalle and will open a store soon. The State Bank of LaSalle and D Eilis store occupy the building currently, with the bank planning to move to its own new building by August. No changes are planned for the Ellis store.
An intimate gathering at Mr and Mrs C M Good celebrated the wedding of Prof Fred Good and his bride. Prof Good, head of a southern college of music, performed and his wife offered selections. Prof Theo Fitz of the Normal sang several solos and, with his wife, gave pleasing duets. About fifteen guests attended and praised the program.
Union Pacific began track laying Friday with a fourteen car gang at White City, completing a Y to connect with the main line. The crew of over 100 men aims for a mile each day, finishing Pleasant Valley by July 25 and Gill by month’s start, as Lone Tree Bridge nears completion.
A Friday storm near Greeley produced a hailstorm and lightning that killed two young horses owned by BK T Leake two miles east of town on Oak Street. The pair were worth about 500 dollars, and the event damaged crops as hail cut vegetation, reducing expected yields to about half a crop.
Most business houses closed from 10 a m to 12 m while funeral services for the late W. W. Kennedy were conducted at the Windsor Methodist church. The Masons led the ceremony and the church choir provided music. Interment followed at Lakeside cemetery.
Sheriff Ben Florance arrested Frank Cooper in Calgary Alberta on a statutory charge linked to the assault on Sam Killham’s 14 year old daughter. Will Cooper already serves four years. the brothers allegedly pressured the younger into fleeing and possible marriage to clear the field for the older to return. Extradition papers required. Canada authorities notified after a weeklong search.
Two offenders at the police station this morning. S. B. Draper, a nearby farmer, fell from the excursion train from Denver with three bottles of booze and a jag, paying ten and costs then going home poorer but wiser. Another man was removed from a south town residence for begging and faces ten days. Humane officers from Denver and local police arrested contractor Conover at the Crow Creek district Union Pacific camp over alleged mistreatment of a horse, Conover seeking a jury trial.
