W H Edwards, manager of the local ice plant, escaped death after an ammonia pipe burst in the engine room on Friday. Blinded and choking, he crawled to his car and drove to Clark and Faulkner’s drug store where a physician treated him. Doctors feared for his life as his lungs were filled with ammonia but he began to improve by 3 o’clock.
The Graham residence hosted Anna Graham and Dickson Smillie in a midweek ceremony officiated by Rev. H. C. Dickinson. Attended by about sixty guests, the couple planned a two week state tour before settling on the groom’s farm near Ault. Anna, a Greeley High School graduate, taught in Baton and is popular locally. Smillie, son of J. W. Smillie, has managed the OWO Panch. A second June wedding, Greerwin-Davis, united Katherine Gray and W. C. Davis with pink and white rose decor and a wedding march by Ruby Rose, in the presence of relatives.
Miss Isabel Cox and Ernest Hood wed at the Cox home in Salida in a simple 10 oclock ceremony. The bride, a milliner who has worked in Greeley for eighteen months, and the groom, a civil engineer from Cleveland, plan to live in Cleveland after a brief state resort trip. The couple will reside at 916 Fourteenth Avenue in Greeley after their wedding.
Harvey Forward and Edna Purdy were married Wednesday morning at the bride’s parents home in Pueblo. Rev. D D Forward, the groom’s father, presided at 6 o clock as Rev. and Mrs Forward attended. The bride, a Normal School graduate, taught last year at Alamosa, and the groom works for Greeley Gas and Light. they will reside in Greeley.
Tonight at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Eric Anderson five miles east of Greeley a wedding takes place. Emil Anderson son of the Andersons will wed Miss Selma A in a ceremony at a set hour performed by Rev. A. C. Leafgren. The groom is a farmer and the couple will reside on a ranch.
Mrse Nettie Leake and Jesse L. Lucas married Wednesday in Denver. The ceremony was performed by Dr. B. T. Vincent of Golden, with the bride’s parents and brother present. The couple will visit relatives before returning to Greeley and will settle on the Poudre Valley ranch.
Mary Rickman and S. M. Franks married by County Judge Bradfield in Greeley on Thursday. Both are well known among the German families here.
The Weld County Fair premium book, 174 pages, 3000 copies, was prepared in 14.5 days after first copy receipt. Delays in entry blanks may postpone mailing by a day or two. Secretary Marek and Rich D. Kelley prepared advertising and data. D. J. March leads as general secretary with R. Woods as general superintendent and a full roster of section heads including Horticulture, Poultry, Dairy, Racing, and more.
Greeley aldermen spent hours approving sale of waterworks property west of Fourteenth Avenue to C. D. Todd for 2365 dollars. They also approved sewer and sidewalk projects, discussed Seventh Avenue grading, and eyed gravel for ballast while addressing water supply strain and a city band concert fund.
A special city meeting approved immediate sewer construction in the northwest part of town. The city engineer has plans ready and an ordinance creating the district will be presented at the next regular meeting. Discussion on Seventh Avenue sewer lasted without definite action due to absent plans. Some aldermen favored pro rating all beneficiaries, others preferred frontage-based assessment. Rumors of a damaged filter bed were denied by Alderman Starkey. water appeared muddy requiring weekly filter cleaning and temporary use of settling-basin water. A third filter is planned for next summer and a park station was also discussed.
Aldermen Howard and Luther offered five dollars each, proposing to refer the matter to the civic federation for solutions. J L Brush was robbed at Boulder railroad station as three men crowded the car, but the theft amount remains unknown. Editor Wangelin observed the scene and distracted the thieves, noting a tall thin man in a green suit among them.
The Denver Laramie and Northwestern tracklaying machine was damaged by an unknown person delaying progress. Handwork resumes at about three quarters of a mile per day while factory parts are obtained. Broad street grading nears completion under Engineer T D Robinson and crew. Surveyors plan a new townsite at the confluence of the St Vrain and Platte rivers. name to be announced.
The Rev Parry Thomas died Wednesday in the Herbert Work sanitarium Pueblo at age 53. Born in Carmarthenshire Wales he studied at S and J Bee s college and Dunham university. Ordained deacon at 23 and priest at 25 he preached in Vermont Iowa Minnesota and served as rector in Greeley. Survived by a widow and two children in Greeley, arrangements pending.
The Colorado & Southern crew began a double track street railway on the city street with about fifty workers, mostly Italians and Greeks. It uses a 60-pound T rail. poles will line the curb due to water mains, progress anticipated at one block daily, cars hoped to run in sixty days. mentions of Miss Avis Kindred and Miss Zora Allford visiting.
The Colorado Supreme Court ruled for William Munce over John Klug in a six year dispute about a team of plugs valued at $125. The case began in L. B. Williard’s justice court, included two replevin actions, and went through county court before reaching the state high court. Munce, an innocent third party, received $125 judgment from Klug via attorney Ewing.
Esther Ecklund aged 19 was struck by a Union Pacific passenger at 9 20 am near Peckham and killed instantly. She had planned to work in Greeley and was engaged to Allen Shattuck. The coroner’s inquest has not yet been held. she was hurled 115 feet from the tracks. The incident shocked locals who knew her family on a ranch east and south of Peckham.
Co C of the state militia camped east of the Armory with 28 men at 5 pm. A grand supper was served by Charles S Poe and George Allison. A cyclone dinged tents of Sergeant Hensley and Corporal McKinley. Capt. Gale plans a summer foothills trip to Laramie or the Poudre.
Mrs Pittcock from Kersey requests at home work for herself and five children at 1527 Second Avenue after the loss of her husband and two children. Two older children seek employment while three younger ones remain at home. A local physician recommends assistance for the worthy family.
