Officials blame both providers and users for dim lights in Greeley. The article explains how aging bulbs lose candle power, how excessive lamps raise costs, and how overloading wiring worsens service. It recommends replacing dimmed bulbs, testing wiring, and upgrading to reduce bills.
Word comes of Kurr Grubb's death in Lyons Colorado. He built the first house near Eaton and one of the first between Greeley and Cheyenne. His shack stood where Anton Anderson's ranch house now sits three miles southwest of Eaton. He is said to have planted the first crop in the area and left a widow and three grown sons.
Omaha dispatch reports Kilpatrick Brothers and Collins awarded the contract to build the Denver Laramie and Northwestern line from Denver to Fort Collins at about 1 million dollars. Kansas promoters bring investors to Colorado weekly to view the route with plans for a Greeley branch via Johnstown or Hillsboro and Thompson Valley to the Platte. The line aims to Seattle ultimately, opening vast mineral and farming regions and linking isolated districts to the wider world.
The Baptists met Tuesday evening January 7 for a banquet and business session. About 300 members attended the dinner from 5 to 7 30 with reports showing progress in all church areas. Membership rose from 285 to 335 and $2700 was handled with 300 allocated to missions and the rest to general expenses and debt on the $5000 parsonage.
Mrs. Martha Cox, likely the oldest local resident, marked her ninety third birthday on Wednesday January 8 at her daughter Mrs. E A Titler home. Born in Indiana she lived long in Iowa and since her husband's death has resided in Greeley with her daughter. She remains remarkably active and spry.
The farmers institute held Friday and Saturday drew an unusually large attendance and strong interest. Topics ranged from stock feeding to potato varieties and hog cholera. Prof. M. Cottrell led sessions with contributions by Prof. Bennett and others. The event included swine disease talks by Dr. Glover and later hog care and horse breeding insights by Prof. Carlyle, plus lively domestic science demonstrations by Miss Rausch and sewing by Miss Boswell.
Dr. Creighton of Manitou reports successful irrigation free tree growing in eastern Colorado near Kiowa Elbert County. Eleven thousand seedlings including catalpa ash maple and locust were planted with soil prep and continuous cultivation, yielding near perfect survival and suggesting profitable timber posts and wind protection benefits.
Mr. and Mrs. D. G. DeWald and daughter Frances and Mr. and Mrs. William Shad traveled to Fort Collins Thursday for a Fraternal Union special meeting. The Shads and DeWalds returned Friday while Mrs. DeWald and daughter stayed several days to visit friends.
